Patek Philippe’s World Time display lets you read the time across a city ring, while its Travel Time watches show home and local time with separate hour indications. Calendar displays solve a different problem: a basic date needs adjustment after short months, an Annual Calendar needs correction once a year, and the World Time date on the 5330G-001 follows the selected local time zone.
What is a complication?
In watchmaking, a complication is a mechanical-watch function beyond telling the time. World Time and Travel Time are different ways to display multiple time zones; a date or calendar mechanism adds a way to track the day of the month. Patek Philippe’s Complications overview describes World Time as showing the time in at least 24 cities or time zones.

How do you read a Patek Philippe World Time watch?
A World Time dial pairs a ring of city names with a rotating 24-hour ring, which is divided into day and night zones. The city aligned at 12 o’clock is the selected local city. The central hands show its time; to read another city, find its name on the city disk and read the corresponding hour on the 24-hour ring. The day/night indication helps distinguish a time that falls during daytime from one that falls at night.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor example, if the local city is aligned at 12, the central hands give its local time. To check another city, locate that city on the ring and read the hour position beside it. The same display provides readings for the other zones without requiring a separate hour hand for each one.
#1 Best Overall
Patek Philippe says the 7129J-001 displays all 24 time zones and uses a pusher at 10 o’clock to select the local city. Its official model page illustrates the city-and-24-hour display. The company credits the original World Time mechanism to Genevan watchmaker Louis Cottier in the 1930s, and says it later refined and patented its contemporary mechanism.
How is World Time different from Travel Time?
Both functions help with time zones, but they organize the information differently:

| Function | What the dial emphasizes | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| World Time | A city-and-24-hour display for many time zones | Select a local city at 12 o’clock; use the city disk and 24-hour ring to read other zones |
| Travel Time | Two zones: home and local time | Two hour hands distinguish home and local time, with separate day/night indications for each |
Patek Philippe’s Complications overview sets out this distinction. World Time is useful when the dial needs to show a range of cities at once; Travel Time concentrates on the two times most relevant to a traveler. A World Time display’s many zone readings should not be mistaken for the two separate hour indications of Travel Time.
How do basic date and Annual Calendar displays differ?
Basic date
A basic date display shows a number from 1 to 31, usually in a window or with a hand, and advances automatically at midnight. It assumes each month has 31 days, so it needs manual correction after the five shorter months of the year.

Annual Calendar
Patek Philippe’s Annual Calendar recognizes months with 30 or 31 days and therefore needs correction once a year, at the end of February. That is different from a perpetual calendar: the Annual Calendar description does not claim that it automatically accounts for February’s variable length. Patek Philippe explains both calendar types on its Calendar Watches page.
What makes the 5330G-001’s date display different?
The 5330G-001 combines World Time with a date hand that is indexed to the local zone selected at 12 o’clock. A red-tipped central glass hand points to the date scale at the edge of the dial. Patek Philippe describes the model as its first World Time watch with a date display in its 2024 announcement; its official product page explains that the date follows the selected local zone.

The date and zone are therefore linked rather than set independently. Patek Philippe says the pusher at 10 o’clock moves the selected city, 24-hour display, and central hour hand in one-hour steps. When a time-zone change crosses the date boundary, the date hand can move forward or backward to match the local date. For example, a change across midnight can advance the date; crossing the International Date Line west to east can move it back by a day. This date-zone behavior is a feature of the 5330G-001, not a general feature of every World Time watch.

Patek Philippe attributes the two-way date adjustment to a patented differential containing two concentric star wheels: one drives the date hand forward and the other backward. When both act together, the differential allows the hand to remain in place. The manufacturer’s 2024 release says the date module contains 70 parts and that caliber 240 HU C is 4.58 mm thick, compared with 3.88 mm for the base caliber 240 HU. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements.

Which display should you look for?
- To read many zones at a glance: World Time uses a city disk and 24-hour ring.
- To track home and local time: Travel Time uses separate hour indications and day/night readings for those two zones.
- For a straightforward date: a basic date advances daily but needs adjustment after shorter months.
- For fewer calendar corrections: an Annual Calendar handles 30- and 31-day months, with a yearly correction at February’s end.
- For a World Time date tied to local time: the 5330G-001’s date follows the selected city and can move in either direction when the time-zone change crosses the date boundary.
These indications explain what each mechanism displays, not every setting operation. For model-specific adjustment instructions, consult the watch’s official manual rather than assuming that every World Time or calendar model is set the same way.
