Patek Philippe Nautilus 3700/1A vs. 5711/1A: What Changed?

The 3700/1A is the original steel Nautilus, introduced in 1976; the 5711/1A is its 2006 anniversary-era successor, redesigned with a three-part case and a seconds hand. They share the Nautilus’s porthole-inspired shape and integrated-bracelet idea, but they are not the same watch in different generations: the case architecture, display and movement history distinguish them.

At a glance: 3700/1A versus 5711/1A

Feature Nautilus 3700/1A Nautilus 5711/1A
Place in the line Original steel Nautilus; launched in 1976 and remained in the collection until 1990. Patek Philippe, 2016 30th-anniversary-era return, launched in 2006. Patek announced the steel model’s forthcoming discontinuation in 2021. Patek Philippe, 2021
Case construction Two-part case, with the bezel and case joined in a porthole-like arrangement. Fratello Watches, comparison updated September 29, 2018 Three-part case with a separate back. The cited comparison gives 43 mm for its 5711 version. Fratello Watches, comparison updated September 29, 2018
Display Two hands: hours and minutes; no seconds hand in the cited comparison. Fratello Watches, comparison updated September 29, 2018 Central seconds hand, alongside hours and minutes. Dial variants changed during the model’s run. Patek Philippe, 2021
Movement in the cited comparison Caliber 28-255C. Fratello Watches, comparison updated September 29, 2018 Caliber 324 S C in the version discussed by Fratello. Patek says caliber 26-330 S C powered the 5711 from 2019. Patek Philippe, 2021

The published 42 mm figure for the 3700 and 43 mm for the compared 5711 reflect Fratello’s measurement convention, not a direct comparison of lug-to-lug length or wrist presence. Patek’s 2016 statement that the anniversary platinum 5711/1P measured 44 mm including the crown—and was 2 mm wider than the original 3700/1A—describes that platinum anniversary model, not the exact width of the steel 5711/1A. Patek Philippe, 2016

Why the 3700/1A matters

Patek Philippe dates the Nautilus debut to 1976, when the steel 3700 brought together a porthole-shaped case, an integrated bracelet and a large diameter—features that broke with the brand’s older conventions. Patek’s magazine credits Gérald Genta with conceiving the watch. The original 3700 remained in the collection until 1990. Patek Philippe, 2016 Patek Philippe Magazine, 2016

Its two-part case is more than a visual detail: the bezel and case are joined in the porthole-like construction described in the specialist comparison. The dial is correspondingly spare, with hour and minute hands but no seconds hand. Fratello identifies caliber 28-255C in the 3700/1A it compares with the later watch. How the 5711/1A evolved the design

Introduced in 2006 for the Nautilus’s 30th anniversary, the 5711/1A revisited the original’s central design rather than simply reproducing it. Its three-part case adds a separate case back, and the dial gains a central seconds hand. Fratello’s comparison discusses a 5711 with caliber 324 S C; the caliber changed during production, so that movement should not be taken as a specification for every 5711/1A. Dial and movement periods

Patek’s 2021 release dates several steel 5711 dial references: blue-black 5711/1A-001 from 2006 to 2009; blue-black 5711/1A-010 from 2010; and silvery white 5711/1A-011 from 2012 to 2019. It also introduced the olive-green 5711/1A-014 as the steel model approached discontinuation. The same release says caliber 26-330 S C had powered the 5711 since 2019 and describes a stop-seconds function that allows setting to one-second accuracy. Those movement and function details apply to the version described in that release; check the particular watch’s production period and reference. Patek Philippe, 2021

Specifications for the 2021 olive-green version

Patek stated that the 5711/1A-014 was water resistant to 120 meters and described 55 individual finishing steps per watch. These are manufacturer specifications and production details for the version covered by the 2021 release, not evidence that every earlier 5711/1A has identical specifications. Patek Philippe, 2021

Which one suits a collector?

  • Choose the 3700/1A for historical originality. It is the original steel Nautilus reference, with the two-part case and two-hand display that define the early design.
  • Choose the 5711/1A for the later interpretation. It retains the core Nautilus look while adding a three-part case, a seconds hand and, in later production, a different movement generation.
  • Compare specific watches, not just reference numbers. The 5711’s dial and movement depend on production period. For a vintage 3700/1A, establish the exact reference and variant, originality, condition, provenance and service history with a qualified specialist.

Discontinuation and current collection status

Patek Philippe’s 2021 release said the steel 5711/1A would soon be discontinued. The current Nautilus collection page labels its listed collection models as discontinued from the collection and also includes new 2026 anniversary launches; the page’s current status should not be confused with whether an individual watch is available through a seller. What the available evidence does not establish about price

The cited specialist comparison contains historical price observations, not a current valuation. No date-matched asking prices, completed sales or service costs are established here, so the evidence does not support naming a price winner or claiming that either reference is the better investment.
