Is Patek Philippe for sale?
According to WatchPro’s October 6, 2026 report from the Milan exhibition, Stern said “the target is to stay independent.” He linked independence to being able to choose the company’s strategy without outside shareholders. This is Stern’s stated position as reported by WatchPro, not a corporate filing.
The report describes recurring sale speculation, including speculation involving Rolex, LVMH and private equity, as baseless. It provides no evidence of an imminent transaction. The supported conclusion is that Stern says he intends to keep Patek Philippe independent, not that a sale process is underway.
When will Thierry Stern step down?
No date has been announced. “We do not have a timetable,” Stern said, according to WatchPro. He noted that his father remained in the role until around age 75, said he would like to stop earlier, and indicated he would remain involved. These comments describe his thinking, not a scheduled transition.

Who could succeed him?
WatchPro identifies Stern’s sons, Adrien and Tristan, but its October 2026 report does not say that either has been selected as successor or that they will lead together.
In a 2019 interview with SWI swissinfo.ch, Stern said both sons had chosen to work with him and that his elder son was then following a five-year learning plan. That is historical context; it does not establish their current roles or indicate which, if either, will take over.

What if neither son succeeds him?
In the same 2019 interview, asked whether he might sell the company if neither son succeeded him, Stern replied: “Absolument pas!” (“Absolutely not!”). He said he would appoint “un directeur général non-propriétaire” — a non-owner managing director — to skip a generation.
That was a contingency Stern described in 2019, not a confirmed 2026 succession plan. It shows that, at the time, he presented professional management as an alternative to a family handover rather than a sale.

Why does family succession matter at Patek Philippe?
Patek Philippe was founded in 1839. The Stern family acquired it in 1932, during the Great Depression, according to WatchPro and a 2024 SWI swissinfo.ch profile. Thierry Stern joined the family business in 1990 and became president in 2009, succeeding his father, Philippe Stern. WatchPro says he became vice-president in 2003 before taking over as president.
WatchPro also attributes an estimate of CHF 2.5 billion in 2025 annual sales to Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult. That is a third-party estimate, not audited revenue, and does not establish anything about succession or a potential sale.
