The 40 mm Patek Philippe Cubitus answers the clearest practical criticism of the 2024 launch: its original steel and two-tone models were 45 mm across the case. But a smaller case does not prove that the debate is over—or that every wearer will prefer the new proportions. The 40 mm 7128/1G and 7128/1R, introduced in 2025, make the Cubitus a more approachable proposition on paper; whether they win over skeptics depends on the design itself, not the number on the spec sheet.
What changed with the 40 mm Cubitus?
The Cubitus debuted in 2024 with three watches: the platinum 5822P-001, the steel 5821/1A-001, and the steel-and-rose-gold 5821/1AR-001. The two 5821 models measure 45 mm from 10 to 4 o’clock and are 8.3 mm thick. In 2025, Patek Philippe added the 40 mm 7128/1G in white gold and 7128/1R in rose gold. Those 7128 references—not the original 5821 watches—are the 40 mm Cubitus models. Patek Philippe’s collection page identifies the later models and their configurations.

Why did the Cubitus draw criticism?
The launch prompted debate in watch-media coverage about the Cubitus’s relationship to Patek Philippe’s established sports-watch designs. That establishes controversy, not consensus: the coverage cited here does not measure how many people liked or disliked the watch, and online comments are not a representative poll.

The design is deliberately distinct. Patek Philippe describes a square case with rounded edges, a horizontally embossed dial, and alternating polished and satin-brushed surfaces. Its president, Thierry Stern, said he wanted “a real sporty, fresh spirit” that captured “the essence of a convertible car.” That intent may help explain the watch’s confident, unconventional shape, but it cannot settle whether the design works for an individual wearer. Does 40 mm make it a better-proportioned watch?
It makes the case dimension smaller by 5 mm than the 45 mm 5821 references, a meaningful change for anyone who found the original too large. But the figure alone cannot establish how the 7128 sits on a particular wrist. The case shape, bracelet fit, and wearer’s preferred visual presence all matter, and the official collection listing does not provide a substitute for trying the watch on.

Nor does the smaller size erase the Cubitus’s defining design choice. The 7128 retains the rounded-square identity rather than becoming a conventional round sports watch. If that shape was the source of a reader’s objection, reducing the diameter may soften the overall presence without changing the underlying taste question.

What distinguishes the original 45 mm steel Cubitus?
The 5821/1A-001 is the clearest reference point for judging what the downsized models change. Patek Philippe lists a self-winding caliber 26-330 S C with date, sweep seconds, stop-seconds, and a stated 35–45-hour power reserve. Its olive-green dial has horizontal embossing and a sunburst finish; the watch has a steel bracelet with a lockable adjustment system, sapphire caseback, and 30 m water resistance. These figures and features describe the steel 5821/1A-001, not the 40 mm 7128 models. See the official 5821/1A-001 specifications for the full listing.
The two-tone 5821/1AR-001 uses steel and rose gold with a blue dial, and its official page lists the same movement family and dimensions as the steel model. The platinum 5822P-001, meanwhile, adds instantaneous grand date, day, and moon-phase indications; it is part of the 2024 debut, not one of the 40 mm 7128 references. So, has the hate ended?
There is no evidence here that public opinion has shifted in a measurable way, so “the hate ends now” works as a provocative thesis, not a factual verdict. What the 40 mm models do is remove one obvious barrier: they offer the Cubitus design in a smaller case than the 45 mm original. That broadens the choice for people who liked the concept but wanted less wrist presence. It cannot guarantee a change of heart for someone who dislikes the square-with-rounded-edges form, and no representative approval or disapproval figures establish a wider reversal.
