The models differ not just in complication but in design intent and documented production scale. This is a profile based on Dufour’s own account, the Fondation Haute Horlogerie’s historical chronology and published auction records—not a hands-on inspection or a current appraisal.
Who is Philippe Dufour?
Dufour’s official career account presents him as a watchmaker who has stayed committed to the craft: “I am a watchmaker and I have remained one.” That is his own description, distinct from the historical model chronology published by the Fondation Haute Horlogerie (FHH). Together, the accounts show a maker whose work spans traditional chiming watches and unusual wristwatch mechanisms, as well as a pared-back time-only design.
Dufour’s official account says the Duality grew from his study of historic two-balance school watches and experimentation with a differential. He describes the Simplicity as an effort to make a timeless, pure three-hand watch, inspired by watches from the 1950s and 1960s that he restored. He also explains that he did not want to make “yet another tourbillon” or follow a fashion; that is his personal view, not a general technical judgment about tourbillons. How the three best-known creations differ
| Model | What defines it | Documented production |
|---|---|---|
| Grande & Petite Sonnerie wristwatch | A wristwatch version of Dufour’s chiming-watch work. | Eight wristwatches, according to FHH. |
| Duality | Two balances linked by a differential, an unusual regulating architecture. | Nine watches, according to FHH. |
| Simplicity | A deliberately restrained, three-hand watch focused on time-only display. | 204 examples made over 17 years, according to FHH. |
These are historical production totals reported in FHH’s profile, not independently audited counts. Individual watches can differ in materials, dial, dimensions and provenance. Fondation Haute Horlogerie profile of Philippe Dufour

What makes the Duality special?
The Duality’s distinction is its two-balance system. Dufour’s account says the balances are connected through a differential that averages their rates. Rather than relying on the familiar single-balance layout, the watch uses the differential to combine the behavior of two regulating organs. FHH dates the model to 1996 and records nine examples.
That architecture makes the Duality conceptually different from the Simplicity: it is notable for how it regulates time, not for adding a display complication. The small production total helps explain its rarity, but the available figures do not establish a current market value or tell how often examples trade.

Why is the Simplicity so restrained?
The Simplicity is a three-hand watch introduced in 2000. Dufour’s stated aim was a pure, lasting design rather than a showcase for complications; FHH records 204 examples made over 17 years. That makes it the most numerous of the three models covered here, though still a limited historical production.
FHH’s chronology also notes that Dufour announced a final 20-piece anniversary series in 2020. The profile separately reports the 204-example total over 17 years; those figures describe the chronology as FHH presents it and should not be combined into a revised total without further evidence.
What do auction results say about value?
Dufour’s official account lists selected past auction results, including CHF 3,660,000 for a Duality and CHF 662,000 and CHF 756,000 for Simplicity watches. It also lists CHF 1,360,000 for a Simplicity 20th anniversary watch, CHF 2,329,000 for a Grande Sonnerie pocket watch, and CHF 4,749,000 and CHF 7,600,000 for Grande Sonnerie wristwatches. The account excerpt supplies no sale dates or lot-level details for these figures, so they are historical examples—not current estimates, typical prices or a valuation for any individual watch. Phillips reports separate results for identifiable lots: a white-gold Duality sold for US$2,056,500, and a Simplicity sold for HK$3,810,000. These are auction-house records for those particular watches, not interchangeable price comparisons. A meaningful comparison needs the exact lot and sale context, including condition, documentation and accessories, provenance, and sale date. Can you buy or service one today?
The sources cited here do not establish current official ordering, wait-list or servicing arrangements. They also do not support a claim that any model is currently available. Anyone considering a purchase or service should confirm present arrangements directly with the relevant parties and assess the specific watch and its documentation; a past auction result alone cannot establish either availability or value.
