The Philippe Dufour Simplicity is a time-focused, manually wound dress watch conceived around deliberate simplicity; Kari Voutilainen’s 28MPR adds a moonphase and a distinct escapement architecture, while Laurent Ferrier’s Classic Micro-Rotor pairs small seconds with automatic winding. The useful comparison is what each watch is designed to show and how it is built—not a universal ranking of craftsmanship or value.
What makes the Simplicity special?
In Philippe Dufour’s retrospective account, the idea began with encouragement from his friend, independent watchmaker Antoine Preziuso, to make a watch for Japan, where Dufour had a fan club in Tokyo. Dufour says the fans challenged him to create a simple watch “but one of absolute perfection.” He recalls: “So, I said to myself that I was going to make a watch, but a simple one, hence the name: ‘Simplicity’.” Dufour’s official Simplicity history and career account document that origin as the maker tells it.

That intention makes the Simplicity a useful reference point for a refined watch that concentrates on time rather than an additional display. Its significance is not that simplicity proves superiority; it is that the design brief prioritizes restraint while the maker’s account frames execution as the challenge.
What do the documented Simplicity examples tell us?
Phillips’ Geneva Watch Auction XVII catalogue describes a 2004 white-gold Simplicity, movement no. 63, with a 34 mm case, manual calibre, 21 jewels, leather strap and certificate of origin. Phillips’ catalogue essay estimates that approximately 200 examples were made over 12 years and notes that examples were often customized to clients’ wishes. Those are catalogue-reported details and an estimate, not a guarantee that every Simplicity has the same specification. Phillips’ lot record for no. 63 documents the particular watch.

A separate Phillips record identifies prototype 000, circa 2000, as an 18k pink-gold, 34 mm display watch with a manual 11-line, 21-jewel calibre. Phillips says it was not intended for sale. It is therefore important not to treat this prototype as an ordinary production example. The prototype 000 catalogue entry provides the lot-specific description.
How do the three watches differ?
| Watch | Display and winding | Case and movement details | What the comparison highlights |
|---|---|---|---|
| Philippe Dufour Simplicity examples documented by Phillips | Time-focused; cited examples are manual | Phillips records 34 mm and 21 jewels for the cited production watch and prototype; the prototype is a manual 11-line calibre | A restrained display and manual-winding format; specifications should be checked against the individual watch |
| Kari Voutilainen 28MPR | Moonphase; in-house movement with two escapement wheels and direct impulse | 37.5 mm; three limited editions of 15 pieces each in steel, platinum and titanium | An added lunar display and a maker-described, distinct escapement architecture |
| Laurent Ferrier Classic Micro-Rotor, silver dial | Hours, minutes and small seconds; automatic pawl-fitted micro-rotor | 40 mm by 11.10 mm; calibre FBN229.01, 186 components, 35 jewels, 3 Hz and 72-hour power reserve | A larger case and automatic winding, with a small-seconds display |
The comparator specifications come from the makers’ pages: Voutilainen’s 28MPR description and Laurent Ferrier’s silver-dial Classic Micro-Rotor page. The 28MPR page calls the model an evolution of the VINGT-8 calibre, introduced in 2008, and says design, construction, fabrication, finishing and assembly are performed in the workshop. The Classic Micro-Rotor page specifies a silicon escapement with double direct impulse and 30 m water resistance. These are maker-published descriptions, not results from a common independent test.
Which design and movement suits your priorities?
Choose the Simplicity’s approach if you want restraint
The documented Simplicity examples center the display on time and use manual winding. The restrained brief is the point for someone who prefers a dress watch without a moonphase or small-seconds indication. Since Phillips documents individual examples and notes client customization, verify the exact reference, movement and condition of any particular watch rather than assuming every example matches no. 63.

Consider the 28MPR if the moonphase matters
The 28MPR is not a like-for-like three-hand alternative: its moonphase changes the dial’s information and purpose. Its two escapement wheels with direct impulse provide another meaningful point of comparison for readers interested in movement architecture, although the available descriptions do not establish a performance advantage over the Simplicity.
Consider the Classic Micro-Rotor if you want automatic winding
The Classic Micro-Rotor adds small seconds and uses an automatic micro-rotor calibre. That shifts the comparison toward winding convenience and a larger case, rather than the manually wound, time-focused format represented by the cited Simplicity lot. Laurent Ferrier lists a 72-hour power reserve for this model.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should case size and finishing claims be read?
The cited Simplicity examples are 34 mm, the 28MPR is 37.5 mm, and the Classic Micro-Rotor is 40 mm. These figures distinguish the cases on paper, but dimensions alone do not establish fit or wrist presence; those depend on more than diameter. The sources do not provide a standardized, independent comparison of finishing quality. Dufour’s stated pursuit of perfection, Phillips’ catalogue descriptions and the makers’ accounts of their own processes should be understood as attributed claims, not a controlled ranking.

What do auction results say about the Simplicity’s price?
Phillips records CHF 762,000 realized for Simplicity no. 63 at Geneva Watch Auction XVII in 2023. It records CHF 660,400 for prototype 000 at Geneva Watch Auction XVIII in 2024. These are results for two specific lots, not current retail prices or a forecast of future value. The prototype was a display watch not intended for sale, so its result should not be treated as interchangeable with that of a production watch.

It cannot by itself establish what another Simplicity is worth today. “Worth it” is therefore personal: it depends on access, the individual watch and whether its restrained design and provenance matter enough to you. The supplied comparator pages do not create a like-for-like price comparison across all three watches.
Quick Recap
What to verify when evaluating a specific watch
- Confirm whether the watch is a production Simplicity or prototype 000; do not infer production status from the model name alone.
- Check the individual case material, diameter, movement details, documentation and any customization against records for that watch.
- Distinguish a dated auction result from a maker-listed price or a present-day offer; the transaction basis and watch are not equivalent by default.
- For the comparators, check the current maker pages for specifications and availability; the pages describe different models and functions rather than equivalent alternatives.
