In daylight it is unusually easy to read; in darkness it is effectively unreadable because it has no backlight. It is not a sports watch in the modern sense: there is no stopwatch, timer, alarm, GPS, or fitness tracking. In 2026, consider one only as an inexpensive collectible or daylight-focused travel watch, and only after checking the display, touch controls, battery and integrated strap.
What is the Phosphor World Time Sport?
Introduced in the early 2010s, the World Time Sport is a quartz digital watch built around a reflective, segmented display that contemporary coverage describes as E Ink or SURF. It is not a smartwatch or a miniature e-reader: its screen presents digital time, date and world-time information in fixed layouts rather than graphics or apps. Its defining idea was to combine daylight-readable display technology with a touch-operated world-time watch. Wired and Canadian Reviewer covered the watch at launch.
Its original price was about $99, according to contemporary coverage and historical retail listings. That is not a guide to its value now: as of August 18, 2026, the located Touch of Modern listings are historical and unavailable, and no functioning official Phosphor retail or support channel is established by the available evidence. Historical Phosphor listings
Design, materials and specifications
The watch has a curved, lightweight plastic case and a soft silicone or rubber strap molded into the design. Reported dimensions are 38 mm across, 5 mm at the case edge and 9.3 mm overall thickness. The case sits relatively close to the wrist, though reviewers found that its broad face can still feel large. The strap is comfortable for ordinary wear but attracts dust and lint; its integrated construction is a more serious long-term drawback because it cannot be replaced like a conventional watch band. The Gadgeteer and Gear Diary discuss fit and construction.

| Specification | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Movement | Quartz |
| Display | Reflective segmented E Ink/SURF; large 12-hour time and smaller 24-hour time in some layouts |
| World time | Selectable zones or regions, reported as 24; this does not mean all 24 are shown simultaneously |
| Case width | 38 mm |
| Thickness | 5 mm at the edge; 9.3 mm overall |
| Case and strap | Plastic/polycarbonate case; integrated silicone or rubber strap |
| Crystal | Most detailed descriptions identify plastic or polycarbonate. The Gadgeteer review also uses “mineral crystal” in its pros list, but its body says Phosphor identified the crystal as plastic; the specification is inconsistent. |
| Water resistance | Published as 3 ATM / 30 m; this rating alone does not establish suitability for swimming or diving |
Reported specifications and the crystal discrepancy appear in The Gadgeteer’s review, Mobility Digest’s review and a historical orange-model listing.
How good is the E Ink display?
In daylight and ordinary indoor light
This is the watch’s strongest feature. The reflective display uses ambient light rather than shining light through an LCD, so its high-contrast digits are easy to see outdoors and in normally lit rooms. Depending on the selected scheme, characters appear dark on a light background or light on a dark background. For someone who wants a time display that remains clear in daylight without a bright screen, the concept still has appeal. Contemporary reviews describe the display and its readability in Wired and Canadian Reviewer.
In dim light and darkness
There is no backlight. In a dark room, at a dim restaurant or at night outdoors, you need an external light source to read the time. This is not a minor trade-off if you regularly check your watch in bed, in a theater or on a night flight. The same reflective design that works so well in daylight offers no self-illumination. The Gadgeteer and Canadian Reviewer note the darkness limitation.

Refreshes and ghosting
Changes to the display can be visible, and faint remnants of a previous display state—ghosting—may remain after a change. That is part of this older segmented E Ink implementation, not the behavior of a conventional always-lit LCD. The slow-refresh character also makes the watch a poor basis for fast-changing sports information or precise timing. Reviewers describe visible refreshes and ghosting in Mobility Digest and Engadget.

Reviews report five general layouts: time with world time, time with calendar, large time, small time, and world time alone. The display can also switch between light and dark character schemes. In the calendar-oriented layout, a review reports that the main time is smaller and shown in 24-hour format rather than as a large 12-hour display. Mobility Digest
The watch’s most practical function is its ability to select among a reported 24 world-time zones or regions. Some layouts can show local and second-zone time together, making it useful for a traveler or anyone coordinating with people in another region. Treat it as a manually configured dual-time watch, not as an automatically updated world clock: the available sources do not establish GPS, radio synchronization, Bluetooth, smartphone integration or automatic daylight-saving adjustments. Current local rules may therefore require the wearer to check and adjust settings. World-time capabilities are described by Wired and Engadget.

How do the touch controls work?
Instead of physical buttons, the watch has two touch-sensitive areas below the display, marked with a three-dot symbol and a crescent or half-moon symbol. Reviewer descriptions report swiping between these areas to change display modes, swiping in the opposite direction to move among world-time zones, and using the setting area for time, date or zone adjustments. A swipe can also change display polarity. These are reviewer-reported gesture concepts, not a complete verified setting procedure. The Gadgeteer and Mobility Digest describe the interface.
Several reviewers found the controls unintuitive at first, and the touch areas can respond to accidental contact. A sleeve, the opposite wrist or a brush against the watch may change a mode or contrast. Wet fingers, gloves, dirt or a damaged touch surface may also complicate operation. Since setup instructions are not consistently available and a community reconstruction labels its procedure uncertain, consult a model-specific original manual rather than relying on an unverified sequence. The reconstructed procedure is explicitly not authoritative.

Is it actually a sports watch?
No—not by the usual functional meaning of the term. “Sport” describes its styling and materials more than its capabilities. Contemporary coverage notes that it lacks a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm and training functions; it also has no GPS, heart-rate sensor or fitness tracking. The slow-refresh display and absence of a backlight further limit its usefulness for exercise. Wired’s assessment and Canadian Reviewer’s review make the distinction clear.

The published water-resistance rating is 3 ATM / 30 m. It should be quoted as a rating, not converted into a promise that the watch is safe for repeated immersion, swimming, showers, diving or high-impact water use. No product-specific evidence here establishes a stronger water-use claim or the current condition of a second-hand watch’s seals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery and long-term maintenance
The low-power display is a central part of the design, and one real-world account describes battery life as very strong. The reviewed material does not provide a dependable official battery-life duration, so there is no sound number to use when estimating how long a particular used example will run. Engadget’s account
A review describes a removable battery cover and relatively easy access, but that does not establish that the right cell, a sound gasket or repair support will be easy to obtain in 2026. Battery replacement appears mechanically accessible; confirm the exact cell and gasket condition before buying, and do not assume the watch remains water resistant after opening unless it has been properly resealed and tested. The accessible battery cover is described by Mobility Digest.

What to check before buying one used in 2026
Because official availability and support are not established, a seller’s demonstration and the physical condition of the individual watch matter more than its original $99 price. Ask for clear photos or a video, and use this checklist before paying:
- Display: Confirm it refreshes, all segments work, contrast is legible and no damage or persistent ghosting obscures the readout.
- Touch controls: Test both touch areas, mode changes, contrast changes and world-time selection rather than accepting “untested” controls.
- Strap: Inspect the integrated band and attachment points for cracking, stickiness, hardening, stretching, tears or other stress. A failed strap may make the watch uneconomical to restore conventionally.
- Case and crystal: Look for scratches, internal dust, damage around the battery cover and signs the case was opened or poorly repaired.
- Battery and settings: Ask whether the battery is currently working and whether the seller can show the watch changing modes and zones. A weak battery can look like a control fault.
- Documentation and recourse: Ask for the original manual if available, and prefer a seller who permits a return if the functions differ from the demonstration.
- Water claims: Do not treat the printed 3 ATM / 30 m rating as proof that an aged, possibly opened watch is safe for immersion.
Reviewers have noted strap wear concerns, dust attraction, fit and, on individual samples, debris beneath the crystal; these are reasons to inspect the particular watch, not proof that every example has those faults. See Gear Diary and Wired.
Do not use the historical $99 original price as a 2026 valuation. No current market value is established by the old retail listings. Pay for condition and the rarity you personally value, not an assumption that age made the watch more valuable; a premium is most defensible only for a near-new, fully demonstrated example with a sound strap, working controls and a return option.
Who should buy it—and who should pass?
Buy only if
- You want an unusual E Ink-era gadget or collectible, rather than a modern feature-rich watch.
- Your use is mostly in daylight or ordinary indoor light.
- You value a manually selected second time zone.
- The price is modest enough to accept limited support and uncertain parts availability.
- The seller demonstrates a healthy display, responsive controls and an intact integrated strap.
Pass if
- You need to read the time in darkness, or want a watch for running, cycling, timing or training.
- You require a replaceable strap, dependable water use, easy servicing or warranty support.
- You expect automatic time-zone and daylight-saving updates.
- The listing cannot demonstrate the display and controls, or the strap is deteriorated.
- The asking price approaches that of a current, supported watch with the functions you need.
What to consider instead
There is no need to find an exact modern equivalent if the Phosphor’s unusual display is not essential. Choose by the function you actually want:

| Modern digital world-time watch | Physical controls, illumination, alarms, timers or stopwatch functions, depending on model | Less unusual display; verify exact features and current availability by model. Casio provides a current watch manual and support portal. |
| Smartwatch | Automatic time-zone handling, travel alerts, connectivity and fitness functions | Requires charging and is more complex; it is a different kind of device, not a direct E Ink replacement. |
| Conventional world-time watch | Buyers prioritizing familiar watch construction, serviceability or a mechanical/analog look | May require manual interpretation or adjustment, and lacks the Phosphor’s reflective segmented display. |
Check current model-specific functions and support before choosing an alternative; world-time coverage, illumination and service options vary by watch.
