The name does not mean every vintage Black Tie belonged to Warhol, nor that a current model is the exact watch he wore.
What is the Piaget Andy Warhol watch?
“Piaget Andy Warhol” refers to a contemporary Piaget collection named through an official collaboration under license with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Piaget connects the collection to artist Andy Warhol’s personal history with the brand, including a Black Tie watch he acquired in 1973, according to Piaget’s account.

The phrase can also refer to the historic watch itself: a yellow-gold Piaget Black Tie, reference 15102, described by Sotheby’s as the “Andy Warhol Black Tie.” The vintage reference and the current collection are related by history and licensing, but they are not interchangeable.
Did Andy Warhol own a Piaget watch?
Piaget says Warhol acquired a gold Piaget Black Tie in 1973 and owned six other Piaget timepieces. The brand says four of those other watches are now part of its Private Collection. These are Piaget’s institutional claims about Warhol’s watches; individual vintage examples still require their own provenance documentation.

Sotheby’s describes the Black Tie reference 15102 as circa 1973 and says Piaget reacquired four of Warhol’s watches for its private museum after his watch collection was sold in 1988. That auction-house account provides context for the specific historic association; it does not establish that all Black Tie watches of similar appearance were his.
How the modern collection differs from the historic Black Tie
Piaget’s current Andy Warhol collection is a licensed contemporary interpretation. A model bearing the collection name should not automatically be described as Warhol-owned, as a replica of his 1973 watch, or as having been worn by him. For a vintage watch, distinguish what the model is from what its particular ownership history proves.
- Historic watch: the Black Tie associated with Warhol’s 1973 acquisition in Piaget’s account; Sotheby’s identifies a circa-1973 yellow-gold reference 15102.
- Current collection: contemporary Piaget models using the Andy Warhol name through the licensed collaboration with the Foundation.
- Provenance: evidence tied to a specific watch, rather than resemblance to a known design or the collection name.
Piaget Andy Warhol “Collage” limited edition
Piaget presents the Andy Warhol “Collage” as a contemporary limited-edition model of 50 pieces, inspired by Warhol’s 1986 “Collage” Self-portrait artwork. The edition size and inspiration are Piaget’s product-description claims; they describe this current model, not the historic Black Tie.
Piaget’s collection history and product page describe the relationship and model here: Piaget Andy Warhol collection and Piaget Andy Warhol “Collage” limited edition.
What to verify when considering a vintage example
Appearance alone cannot establish that a watch belonged to Warhol. Ask for documentation specific to the watch and assess its condition and service history independently.
- Reference and identity: confirm the reference and physical details rather than relying on a seller’s use of “Andy Warhol Black Tie.”
- Ownership evidence: look for credible, watch-specific provenance supporting any claim of Warhol ownership.
- Condition: review the case, dial, movement, and any restoration or replacement parts.
- Service history: request available records and establish what work has been performed.
Sotheby’s listing for the circa-1973 yellow-gold reference 15102 offers an example of how an auction house frames the specific attribution: Sotheby’s Piaget “Andy Warhol Black Tie,” reference 15102. A listing is provenance context for that watch, not proof about other examples.
What Piaget’s use of the name establishes
Piaget describes the Andy Warhol name as part of an official collaboration under license with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Richemont’s FY2025 annual report also names the Andy Warhol collection among Piaget launches intended to reconnect with collectors and aficionados. That is corporate positioning; it does not establish sales results or independent measures of collector demand.
For the historical acquisition and licensing description, see Piaget’s collection history. Richemont’s corporate context appears in its FY2025 Annual Report and Accounts.
