Google lists the AI feature for Pixel Watch 4 and 5, and it requires an internet connection and a personal Google Account with Gemini enabled. Photos supports up to 30 selected images.
How the two watch faces differ
| What you want | Better starting point | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| A design inspired by an idea | AI-assisted customization | You describe the look with text or voice, choose a visual style, review the offered designs, and apply one. |
| A specific person, pet, place, or memory | Photos watch face | You select personal photos to display; Google supports up to 30. |
| A rotating selection of personal images | Photos watch face | You can choose multiple images, up to the 30-photo limit. |
| A face without choosing or supplying photos | AI-assisted customization, if eligible | You start with a prompt and style choice, subject to the feature’s account, connection, and device requirements. |
Google describes colors, styles, layouts, and complications as general watch-face controls. A complication can show information such as weather or step count, but Google does not promise that every control or complication is available on every face. What you need for AI-assisted customization
Google’s help article says the AI-assisted feature is available only on Pixel Watch 4 and Pixel Watch 5. It also requires an internet connection and a personal Google Account with Gemini enabled. The documented creation flow accepts a text description or voice input, then asks you to choose a visual style before reviewing and applying the result. Google’s article does not establish regional or language availability in detail.
How to create an AI-assisted face
- Open the watch-face creation flow on your Pixel Watch or in the Pixel Watch app on your phone.
- Enter a description or provide a voice prompt for the design you want.
- Choose one of the offered visual styles.
- Review the results and apply the design you prefer.
Menu labels and the exact path can vary between the on-watch and phone-app routes; follow the creation flow presented on your device. The account and internet requirements still apply.

What you need for a Photos face
The Photos watch face uses images you select through Google Photos, rather than generating a design from a prompt. Google’s setup instructions call for the Pixel Watch app on your phone and Google Photos on both the phone and watch. Update those apps if Photos or its image-selection controls are missing.
How to set up the Photos watch face
- Update the Pixel Watch app on your phone and Google Photos on both your phone and watch.
- In the Pixel Watch app, open Watch faces, add a face, and choose Photos.
- Select up to 30 images in Google Photos.
- Add the face and save your changes.
You can also begin setup on the watch; Google’s instructions hand photo selection off to the phone. The image-selection step therefore depends on having the phone and Google Photos available.

Choosing between a generated look and your own photos
- Choose AI-assisted customization when you have an idea you want to express in words or speech and meet the feature requirements.
- Choose Photos when the point is to see particular personal images or cycle among a selected group.
- Check complications on the actual face if quick access to weather, steps, or other glanceable information matters; identical support across both face types is not documented.
Google’s help information does not quantify battery impact, compare legibility or image quality, or explain the model and privacy handling for prompts. Those factors cannot be used to claim one option is better than the other.
