Pixel Watch 4 Leak: A Bit Sad About the Chip, Good News for the Watch

The Pixel Watch 4 leak was a letdown for buyers hoping for a new processor, but its battery, charging, display and safety upgrades made for a more practical watch.

The Pixel Watch 4 leak had one disappointing headline: Android Authority reported that Google would stick with the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform instead of making a major processor leap. But the same report pointed to upgrades people feel every day—longer battery life, quicker charging, a brighter display and new safety features. Now that the watch has shipped, the verdict is clearer: the leak was a bit sad for buyers chasing new silicon, but good news for those who value practical improvements.

What the Pixel Watch 4 leak claimed—and what shipped

Before launch, Android Authority reported that the Pixel Watch 4 would use the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, with larger batteries, two case sizes, a domed display rated for up to 3,000 nits, faster charging and satellite communication among the practical changes. Google announced the watch on August 20, 2025; it became available in the United States on October 9, 2025. The finished product broadly followed the leak’s efficiency-and-usability direction rather than delivering a dramatic processor story.

Google’s final specifications confirm 41mm and 45mm models, an Actua 360 domed AMOLED LTPO display, dual-frequency GPS, satellite SOS communication and a Quick Charge Dock. Google rates battery life at up to 30 hours for the 41mm model and up to 40 hours for the 45mm model with the always-on display enabled. These are manufacturer estimates, not guarantees for every use pattern. Google’s launch announcement and specifications describe the shipping hardware.

Why the processor headline felt disappointing

A new processor generation can bring faster app launches, more headroom for future software and better efficiency. When a leak instead points to a familiar platform, buyers—especially recent Pixel Watch owners—can reasonably wonder whether the new model is a meaningful generation or just a refresh.

#1 Best Overall
Google Pixel Watch 4 (45mm) - Smartwatch - Moonstone Active Band - Wi-Fi
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
  • See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
  • The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
  • Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]

That concern matters most if the current watch feels slow or if you want a clear performance reason to upgrade. But a smartwatch does not spend all day running demanding apps. For notifications, payments, fitness tracking, navigation and lightweight apps, a mature platform can be adequate. The useful question is whether the finished watch is more responsive in the tasks you do, lasts longer and remains serviceable—not whether its chip name sounds newer. The available evidence supports a practical hardware refinement, not a major performance leap.

What changed in daily use

Battery life and charging

Google rates the 41mm Pixel Watch 4 for up to 30 hours and the 45mm for up to 40 hours, with the always-on display enabled. The company also advertises 15 hours of charge in 15 minutes. Those figures describe Google’s stated ratings and charging claim; they should not be read as an expectation of 40 hours during frequent GPS workouts, LTE calls, streaming or intensive health monitoring. Runtime varies with settings and use. For independent testing of the 45mm LTE model under demanding scenarios, see Android Central’s battery test.

The 45mm model’s longer rating is useful if endurance is your priority, but the trade-off is a larger case. The 41mm weighs 31.0g without its band; the 45mm weighs 36.7g. Both are 12.3mm thick, according to Google’s specifications. Choose by fit first: a watch that is uncomfortable is not a practical battery upgrade.

Brighter, larger-feeling display

The display is an AMOLED LTPO panel with a responsive 1Hz-to-60Hz refresh rate, always-on support and up to 3,000 nits peak brightness. Google also specifies custom 3D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The brighter peak can help with outdoor readability, while a larger active area gives more room for taps, notifications, maps and workout screens. Peak brightness is not a promise that the screen stays at that level in every condition, and a curved, domed face is a style and durability trade-off rather than a guarantee against edge impacts.

  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

GPS, safety and serviceability

Dual-frequency GPS is intended to improve location tracking, while satellite SOS adds a way to contact emergency services in supported circumstances when ordinary connectivity is unavailable. Google describes the Pixel Watch 4 as its first watch with standalone satellite communication support. Availability and operation can depend on country, network and emergency-service conditions, so check local support rather than treating satellite SOS as universal coverage.

Google also highlights a more serviceable design with replaceable display and battery. That is a welcome ownership improvement, but serviceability does not establish that every repair is user-performed, inexpensive or available in every market. The watch is rated 5 ATM and IP68; those ratings do not make it indestructible. Google lists Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, NFC, UWB and LTE/UMTS options in its connectivity specifications.

Who should upgrade?

Pixel Watch 1 or 2 owners

The case is strongest if you are coming from an older Pixel Watch and want the larger 45mm option, better outdoor visibility, faster charging, improved GPS, satellite safety features or a design Google says is more serviceable. Those benefits change more than a processor label does, especially if your current watch’s battery or screen is a daily frustration.

Pixel Watch 3 owners

For Pixel Watch 3 owners, the upgrade is harder to justify on performance alone. The core smartwatch experience remains familiar, and battery life improves without reaching multi-day endurance territory. Consider switching if a particular improvement—such as the 45mm model, brighter display, satellite SOS or serviceability—solves a real need. Otherwise, keeping the watch you have is a reasonable choice.

People choosing a first Pixel Watch

The Pixel Watch 4 is a more compelling proposition if you want Google services and Fitbit health tracking in a full smartwatch. It works with most phones running Android 11 or newer, according to Google’s compatibility announcement; feature availability can vary by device, region, carrier and account. It is not an option for iPhone owners.

It is a weaker fit if your priority is week-long battery life, rugged use or deep endurance-sports metrics. Android Central’s review also identifies software longevity, battery life, ruggedness and traditional styling as areas where Samsung or OnePlus can be stronger. Garmin is worth considering for buyers who put long endurance and sports depth ahead of Google integration. Health and fitness features are not medical diagnoses, and some coaching or health services may require a paid membership.

Which size and connectivity should you choose?

41mm or 45mm

Pick 41mm if you have a smaller wrist, prefer a less prominent watch or value lower weight. Pick 45mm if you want the longer official battery rating and a roomier screen, and the larger case fits comfortably. Google’s U.S. configuration page listed starting prices of $349.99 for 41mm and $399.99 for 45mm; prices and promotions can change, so check the current configuration page.

LTE or Bluetooth/Wi-Fi

LTE makes sense if you regularly leave your phone behind and want calls, texts, navigation or music connectivity away from it. Check carrier compatibility and service terms before buying. Bluetooth/Wi-Fi is the simpler fit if your phone is usually nearby and you do not want a separate cellular arrangement. A Google Store offer described two years of data for eligible U.S. LTE purchases, but it required activation, did not support LTE voice calling and was non-renewable; the terms also said service ended if the watch was returned. Check the offer terms for current availability.

So, was the leak good or sad?

Judged by the processor headline, the leak was a letdown for anyone expecting a generational speed boost. Judged as a prediction of the finished watch, it was also a preview of a more useful set of changes: better-rated endurance, faster charging, a brighter display, dual-frequency GPS, satellite SOS and improved serviceability. That makes the Pixel Watch 4 a sensible upgrade for many older-watch owners, but not an automatic buy for Pixel Watch 3 users or anyone who needs exceptional battery life.
