Google’s Double pinch, Wrist turn and faster Smart Replies are already available—not upcoming features. They debuted on Pixel Watch 4 in December 2025, and Google now documents the gestures and improved Smart Replies on Pixel Watch 3 as well, provided the watch runs Wear OS 6.1 or later and its apps are current. The controls are useful hands-free shortcuts, but they are context-sensitive and do not make every watch function phone-free.
What the gestures do
| Feature | Motion | Supported actions | Compatibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double pinch | Tap your index finger and thumb together twice. | Scroll alerting notifications; choose the first available Smart Reply; snooze alarms; manage supported timers and stopwatches; play or pause media; take a photo; and control calls where the current software supports it. | Pixel Watch 3 and 4 running Wear OS 6.1 or later with updated watch apps. |
| Wrist turn | Quickly turn your wrist away from your body, then back. | Close an expanded notification, silence an incoming call and navigate or dismiss supported watch interfaces. | Pixel Watch 3 and 4 running Wear OS 6.1 or later with updated watch apps. |
| Raise to Talk | Lift the watch approximately 2–4 inches from your mouth. | Activates Gemini for spoken requests. | Pixel Watch 4, Wear OS 6 or later, Gemini as the default assistant and a compatible Pixel 9 or later phone. |
Google’s help documentation is the authority for the actions available on your current software. These are shortcuts, not a universal replacement for tapping and swiping: Double pinch and Wrist turn only respond in supported contexts, and Google displays gesture hints where Double pinch is available. See Google’s gesture instructions.
How to turn on Double pinch and Wrist turn
From the Pixel Watch phone app
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Tap Settings.
- Choose Gestures, then Hand gestures.
- Switch Double pinch and Wrist turn on or off.
On the watch
- Swipe down from the watch face.
- Tap Settings → Gestures → Hand gestures.
- Set either gesture to on or off.
Google says supported watches enable the gestures by default, but checking after a system or app update avoids surprises. The same Hand gestures screen lets you set instructional-hint frequency to Always, Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Once.
What “faster Smart Replies” actually means
Google replaced the previous reply model with a Gemma-based model that runs on the watch or a connected compatible Pixel phone. Google claims it is twice as fast and uses nearly three times less memory than the prior generation; those are Google’s performance claims, not independent benchmark results. The model is intended to produce more expressive, context-aware suggestions rather than merely opening the reply list sooner. Details are in Google’s December 9, 2025 announcement.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
Phone connected versus disconnected
When the watch is disconnected from Bluetooth, it can generate Smart Replies with its on-device model. Generating a suggestion is different from delivering a message: sending still requires the messaging app and a suitable network connection. An LTE watch can generally communicate away from the phone over cellular service; a Wi-Fi/Bluetooth model normally needs an appropriate phone, Wi-Fi or other connection.
Choose the reply mode
- Open the Google Pixel Watch app.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose AI generated, Basic or None.
Smart Replies are enabled by default. If you see only short canned responses, the notification may be using Basic mode, or the app may not expose a supported reply action. Google says processing occurs locally on the compatible Pixel phone or watch and that it does not store or process Smart Reply data; that is Google’s stated data-handling position.

Requirements and the Pixel 3 versus Pixel 4 distinction
The gestures are not Pixel Watch 4-exclusive anymore. Google’s current support page lists Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4 with Wear OS 6.1 or later and updated watch apps. The December 2025 rollout was identified as Wear OS 6.1; an early community notice referenced build BP4A.251205.005.W7 for Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4, but that build is not the only qualifying version in 2026. Check the current version rather than hunting for that specific number.
| Capability | Pixel Watch 3 | Pixel Watch 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Double pinch and Wrist turn | Yes, with Wear OS 6.1 or later and updated apps. | Yes, with Wear OS 6.1 or later and updated apps. |
| Improved Gemma-based Smart Replies | Yes, subject to Google’s phone requirement. | Yes, subject to Google’s phone requirement. |
| Raise to Talk | No; Google documents it for Watch 4. | Yes, with Wear OS 6+, Gemini default and a compatible Pixel 9 or later phone. |
Google’s Smart Reply help page specifies a compatible Pixel 9 or later phone for the documented experience. The Pixel Watch 4 itself works with most phones running Android 11 or newer, but general watch compatibility does not guarantee every AI feature. Check Google’s Smart Reply requirements before buying.
Rank #3
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Raise to Talk is a separate feature
Do not confuse Raise to Talk with the two hand gestures. To enable it in the phone app, open Google Pixel Watch → Settings → Watch Preferences → Gestures and switch it on. On the watch, swipe down and choose Settings → Gestures → Raise to Talk. Gesture and voice sensitivity are adjustable; increasing sensitivity can make activation easier but can also cause more accidental activations. The feature requires Pixel Watch 4, Wear OS 6 or later, Gemini as default assistant and a compatible Pixel 9 or later phone. See Google’s Raise to Talk guide.
When these controls are most useful
- Carrying groceries, tools or a child when touching the screen is awkward.
- Wearing gloves or having wet or dirty hands.
- Silencing a call or dismissing an alert while walking or exercising.
- Choosing a quick reply without precise touchscreen interaction.
- Using Pixel Camera shutter control from a short distance.
- Reducing the fine motor demands of small watch controls.
They remain convenience and accessibility features. A gesture will not work on every screen, and a watch still needs normal controls for full navigation.

Troubleshoot a gesture or Smart Reply
If a gesture does nothing
- Verify that the watch is a Pixel Watch 3 or 4.
- Install Wear OS 6.1 or later and update the watch’s installed apps.
- Check Settings → Gestures → Hand gestures.
- Run the interactive tutorial again.
- Use the precise motion: two quick finger-and-thumb contacts for Double pinch, or a quick away-and-back turn for Wrist turn.
- Try it in a screen that supports the action; lack of a response elsewhere can be expected.
If Smart Replies are missing or wrong
- Set Notifications to AI generated rather than Basic or None.
- Confirm the notification exposes a supported reply action.
- Check that the messaging app and watch software are current.
- Verify the Pixel 9-or-later phone requirement for Google’s documented AI experience.
- Remember that local generation does not remove the network requirement for sending.
Should you buy a Pixel Watch 4 for these features?
Existing Pixel Watch 3 owners
Do not upgrade solely for Double pinch, Wrist turn or faster Smart Replies: Google documents all three on Watch 3 with the required software. Consider Watch 4 for its newer hardware or Watch 4-only functions such as Raise to Talk instead.
New buyers
These controls are sensible reasons to value the Pixel Watch platform, especially if hands-free interaction matters. They are not, by themselves, a reason to choose Watch 4 over an updated Watch 3. Google’s US Store listed Watch 4 from $349.99 when checked, with the 41mm configuration at $349.99 and 45mm at $399.99; prices and stock change. Google quotes up to 30 hours for 41mm, up to 40 hours for 45mm and up to 15 hours of use from a 15-minute charge. Check the current configuration page.

LTE or Wi-Fi/Bluetooth?
LTE is the better fit if you regularly leave your phone behind and need calls, messages or streaming over cellular service. Google’s US offer page has listed two years of Google Fi Wireless data for eligible Watch 4 LTE purchases, subject to terms; the offer does not support voice calling, requires an active wireless phone plan for texting, expires after the included period and is not automatically renewable. See the current offer terms. Choose Wi-Fi/Bluetooth if your phone is usually nearby or you do not want carrier activation.
Protection-plan prices and Google Health Premium trials vary by configuration, location and promotion, so review the live Store page rather than treating a displayed monthly or two-year price as universal.
Bottom line
Double pinch and Wrist turn make Pixel Watch interactions quicker in hands-busy situations, and the Gemma-based Smart Reply model is faster and more efficient according to Google. But the update is not a compelling Watch 3-to-Watch 4 upgrade on its own: both watches now receive the core gesture and Smart Reply features. Buy Watch 4 for its newer hardware, connectivity or Watch 4-only capabilities, and choose LTE only when genuine phone-free connectivity justifies the added service requirements.
