It also improved the existing Fall Detection algorithm’s ability to recognize bicycle-related falls on supported Wear OS 4 watches. The update further refined on-wrist detection, including for users with wrist tattoos.
That distinction matters: “bicycle fall detection” is an improvement to Fall Detection, not a separate bicycle-crash mode, and emergency calling still depends on model, connectivity, permissions, region and battery state.
What the June 2024 update changed
Google began the phased rollout on June 11, 2024, with availability varying by carrier and device over roughly a week. The global software version for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 was TWD9.240605.001.A1, for watches running Wear OS 4. Google’s release announcement also listed security patches, bug fixes and performance improvements. See the June 2024 Pixel Watch update announcement.
Car Crash Detection on Pixel Watch 2
Pixel Watch 2 gained detection for a suspected severe vehicle crash. The watch checks in with the wearer and presents an alarm and full-screen countdown. If there is no response, it can call emergency services and play an automated message. This requires the updated Personal Safety app as well as compatible watch software.

Better recognition of bicycle falls
Google described the cycling change as an updated Fall Detection algorithm. It is intended to improve recognition when a rider takes a hard fall from a bicycle; it does not create a user-facing “Bicycle Fall Detection” switch or guarantee that every cycling incident will be identified.
Improved wrist-wear detection
The release also improved on-wrist and off-wrist detection, specifically including situations involving wrist tattoos.
Which watches received which feature?
| Model | June 2024 update | Car Crash Detection in that release | Bicycle-fall algorithm improvement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Pixel Watch | Yes, where supported and running Wear OS 4 | No | Yes, according to Google’s release applicability |
| Pixel Watch 2 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Pixel Watch 3 | Not released in June 2024 | Not applicable to that historical rollout | Not applicable to that release |
Google’s current safety documentation lists Car Crash Detection on Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4, while Fall Detection is listed across the Pixel Watch line. That current table should not be used to rewrite the 2024 rollout: the June announcement specifically identified Pixel Watch 2 as the model gaining Car Crash Detection. See Google’s current Pixel Watch safety-feature help.
Car Crash Detection versus Fall Detection
Car Crash Detection
Car Crash Detection looks for signals associated with a serious vehicle collision, including location and motion information from the phone. After a suspected crash, Google says the watch can show a full-screen countdown of up to 60 seconds, vibrate and sound an alarm, and let you cancel or call emergency services immediately. If you do not respond, it can place the emergency call and play an automated message. The emergency number is country-dependent; in the United States it is normally 911.

Fall Detection
Fall Detection responds to a hard fall, including a bicycle-related fall after the algorithm update. Google says the watch waits about 30 seconds after detecting a fall before issuing the initial alert; if you remain unresponsive, an emergency call can follow after 60 seconds. Neither system detects every incident, and unusual high-impact activity can produce a false alert. Google explains the technology and limitations in its Fall Detection overview and technical explanation of fall-detection AI.
Phone, Wi-Fi and LTE requirements
- Wi-Fi models: generally need the paired phone nearby and connected over Bluetooth to place an emergency call.
- LTE models: can call without the phone nearby when an active LTE connection and network coverage are available.
- Paired devices: when a compatible Pixel phone and watch are actively connected, either device may let you respond to a Car Crash Detection alert.
- Separated devices: each may operate independently only if powered on and otherwise capable of making an emergency call.
LTE is not unlimited emergency connectivity. Carrier activation, signal strength, battery level, settings and local support still determine whether a call succeeds.
How to enable the safety features
These are Google’s current menu paths; labels can change with later app versions.
Car Crash Detection on the watch
- Press the Pixel Watch crown.
- Tap Safety.
- Tap Car Crash Detection.
- Follow the prompts.
Car Crash Detection on the phone
- Open the Safety app and tap Features, then Car Crash Detection.
- Alternatively, open the Google Pixel Watch app, tap Safety & emergency, then Car Crash Detection.
Fall Detection
- On the watch, press the crown, tap Safety, then Fall detection, and turn it on.
- In the Pixel Watch app, open Settings, choose Safety & emergency, tap Fall detection, and enable it.
Prerequisites, regions and limitations
- Install available Pixel Watch system, Google Pixel Watch and Personal Safety app updates.
- Allow location access to Personal Safety if you want your location shared with emergency services.
- Fall Detection is intended for eligible adults and may not be available in every country.
- Keep Bluetooth enabled and the phone nearby for a Wi-Fi watch; maintain active LTE service for standalone calling on an LTE watch.
- Car Crash Detection will not work with Airplane mode or Battery Saver enabled.
- The watch and phone must have sufficient battery and a usable network connection.
Google currently lists Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and the United States for these safety features. Listed languages include English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Mandarin Chinese and Canadian French. Updating safely and handling problems
- Charge the watch and connect it to Wi-Fi or its paired phone.
- Install watch, Pixel Watch and Personal Safety app updates.
- If the OTA notification is absent, wait for the phased rollout rather than forcing an unsafe test.
- Restart the watch and phone after installation if a feature or menu is missing.
- Confirm the build and recheck permissions, connectivity, Airplane mode and Battery Saver.
Do not stage a crash or deliberately fall to test detection.
Battery-drain reports
Google’s June announcement gives no quantified battery penalty for Car Crash Detection. Users in the June 2024 community thread reported severe drain, while some replies in the July 2024 community thread said battery life returned to normal. These are anecdotal reports, not proof that the safety features caused the problem. Update both apps, restart both devices, inspect battery usage and install the next system update. If drain persists, contact Google support before disabling a safety feature; turning it off reduces protection.
Why an emergency call might fail
- A Wi-Fi watch is away from its paired phone.
- LTE service is inactive or the cellular signal is weak.
- Airplane mode, Battery Saver, a dead battery or denied location permission is blocking operation.
- The feature is unavailable in the user’s country, language or account type.
- The wearer cannot hear or respond to the countdown, or motion data is inconclusive.
Is this update still relevant when buying a Pixel Watch?
Existing Pixel Watch 2 owners
Yes, particularly for solo driving or cycling. Install the required updates, enable the features and verify the connectivity arrangement you depend on.
Original Pixel Watch owners
The bicycle-fall algorithm improvement may help, but this release did not add Car Crash Detection. Buying a newer model solely to recreate a two-year-old update is unnecessary if you do not need vehicle-crash detection.

Wi-Fi versus LTE buyers
Choose LTE only if independent emergency calling away from the phone matters and you can maintain an active compatible plan. A Wi-Fi model is more dependent on the nearby phone.
Shoppers in 2026
Google’s current documentation covers Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4 for Car Crash Detection. Compare the current generation, support horizon, battery and local connectivity on the official Google Pixel Watch comparison page rather than choosing an older model solely because of the June 2024 feature. Confirm current prices, LTE charges and regional availability before purchase. Pixel Watch requires a compatible Android phone and is not an iPhone option.
What the feature can—and cannot—promise
- It adds another route to emergency services when a wearer may be incapacitated.
- It is useful backup protection for drivers, cyclists, older adults and people exercising alone.
- It is not a replacement for a phone, an active cellular plan, network coverage or a personal safety plan.
- It does not guarantee detection of every crash or fall, and high-impact activity can trigger false alerts.
- It should not be treated as a dedicated bicycle-crash analytics system.
The Bottom Line
The June 2024 update’s precise result is simple: Pixel Watch 2 gained Car Crash Detection, while supported Wear OS 4 watches gained better recognition of bicycle-related falls. The original Pixel Watch did not gain Car Crash Detection in that release. Enable the features only after checking region, permissions, phone/LTE connectivity, battery and mode settings, and treat detection as a backup rather than a guarantee.
