If an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or other Bluetooth device still shows an active connection, start by checking whether the case detects and charges both earbuds—not by repeatedly toggling Bluetooth. Poor seating, debris, a depleted case, a stuck pairing state, firmware, or hardware failure can all produce this symptom.
Follow this order: charge the case by cable for 15 minutes, reseat both earbuds, verify that both show charging, clean the case safely, then reset, update, and isolate the failing component.

First, identify what “connected” means
A device can keep AirPods listed as a remembered Bluetooth accessory without routing audio to them. Brief connection activity when you open the lid or remove a bud is also expected. The abnormal case is persistent active audio or an active connection after both earbuds are fully seated and the lid has been closed.
- Audio continues through the earbuds: treat this as an active routing or case-detection problem.
- Only one bud remains connected: check whether that bud shows a charging indicator before changing Bluetooth settings.
- The case appears only while plugged in: a depleted or failing case battery is possible.
- The case or earbuds show 0%, no level, or a stuck level: charge and inspect contact detection first.
- The pairing animation repeatedly appears: reset and re-pair after the physical checks.
Find My visibility is not proof that audio Bluetooth is actively connected. Menus and battery details also differ on non-Apple devices.

- Bluetooth Button and Wireless and Wire Charging: This Replacement AirPods Pro Charging Case supports Bluetooth pairing. Wireless and Wire Charging enables you to enjoy convenient charging and fast charging. Please note that using wireless charging may cause the case to heat up, which is a normal phenomenon
- Protective AirPods Pro Case: This Replacement AirPod Pro Charging Case features high quality shell protection for earbuds when impacted or falling, similar to the original AirPods Pro 2 charging case
- Troubleshooting Instructions: Do not plug in the charger during the Bluetooth pairing stage. If you encounter issues like one earbud has no sound, the indicator light is flashing randomly, or cannot connect, follow these steps: Put the earbuds back into the case and close the lid for 15 minutes then open it; Check the contact points of the earbuds and charging case and wipe them clean; Confirm that the earbuds are not disconnected and have enough battery power
1. Reseat the earbuds and confirm both are charging
- Remove both earbuds and inspect each case well for lint, earwax, dust, or an ear-tip obstruction.
- Reinsert each earbud so it drops fully into its magnetic charging slot.
- Close the lid for at least 30 seconds.
- Open the lid near an iPhone or iPad and inspect the battery card or Bluetooth device information.
- Confirm that the left and right earbuds each show a charging indicator, and check the case level.
Apple’s charging guidance explains how to check charge status on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or the case: Apple’s AirPods charging troubleshooting. If one bud does not show charging, concentrate on seating, debris, contact contamination, or that earbud before resetting. A case that fails to register a bud can leave it active and connected.
2. Charge the case with a cable
- Put both AirPods in the case and close the lid.
- Connect the case to the correct Lightning or USB-C cable.
- Charge for at least 15 minutes, as Apple recommends when troubleshooting charging.
- Disconnect the cable and test whether the earbuds now disconnect when the lid is closed.
A wired test is more useful than relying on wireless charging when the case shows no light. If using a wireless charger, reposition the case; if the light still does not appear, switch to a cable. Working normally only while plugged in points toward a depleted or failing case battery, but inspection is needed to confirm it.
3. Clean the case without damaging the contacts
Debris can prevent an earbud from making reliable charging contact. Apple’s cleaning instructions are at Apple’s AirPods cleaning guide.
- Use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush to remove debris from the charging port.
- Wipe the exterior with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
- If necessary, slightly dampen the cloth with isopropyl alcohol; do not spray or pour liquid into the case.
- Allow every component to dry fully before charging or use.
Do not scrape the contacts or ports with pins, SIM tools, cotton swabs, or metal objects. Do not use abrasive materials, close-range compressed air, a hair dryer, or heat. If the earbuds were exposed to sweat or liquid, let them dry completely; do not run them under water.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Forget and reset the AirPods using the correct model procedure
Resetting can clear a pairing or state problem, but it cannot repair a failed battery, contact, sensor, or other hardware. It also removes custom AirPods settings.
AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Pro 2
- Place both earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the paired iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth.
- Tap the Info button next to the AirPods, choose Forget This Device, and confirm.
- Open the case lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back for about 15 seconds.
- Release it when the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Hold the open case near the device and follow the pairing prompt.
AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s current instructions use a different front-case sequence. Do not use the rear-button procedure for Pro 3.
- Put the earbuds in the case, close the lid, and wait 30 seconds.
- On the paired iPhone or iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth, tap the Info button, and forget the AirPods.
- Open the case. Double-tap the front while the status light is on.
- Double-tap again when the light flashes white.
- Double-tap a third time when the light flashes faster.
- Wait for amber, then white, and reconnect with the open case near the device.
Apple’s model-specific reset instructions, updated May 27, 2026, are at Apple’s reset guide.
If the light never flashes amber and white
Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid for 20 seconds, open it, and repeat the procedure for your model. If the case still cannot enter reset mode after charging and cleaning, a power, button, charging, firmware, or internal electronics fault becomes more likely.

5. Let firmware update automatically
There is no ordinary manual firmware-download button. Apple delivers updates automatically when these conditions are met:
- Update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac to the latest available operating-system version.
- Turn on Bluetooth and connect the AirPods.
- Connect the device to Wi-Fi.
- Connect the charging case to power.
- Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid, and keep the case within Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes.
- Open the lid afterward and reconnect.
Details are on Apple’s AirPods firmware page. Apple listed these versions on August 18, 2026: AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C case, and AirPods Pro 2 with Lightning case at 8B41; AirPods Pro 1 at 6F21. Numbers can change. Check yours at Settings > Bluetooth > Info button next to the AirPods > About > Firmware Version. An update may help a software-state problem, but Apple does not identify firmware as a guaranteed fix for this symptom.
6. Isolate the failing part
After resetting, turn Bluetooth off and on, restart the host device, and temporarily disable Bluetooth on nearby Apple devices that might be taking the connection. Then test one earbud at a time and repeat on another Apple device.
| Test result | Most useful interpretation |
|---|---|
| Both earbuds fail to charge | Case power, debris, contacts, or case electronics |
| Only one earbud fails to charge | That earbud, its case well, or contact alignment |
| Both earbuds charge but stay connected | Pairing, firmware, sensor/state, or device routing |
| Failure follows the AirPods to another device | AirPods or case issue |
| Failure occurs on only one phone or Mac | Host-device Bluetooth or software state |
| Works only while the case is plugged in | Possible case-battery failure |
| Reset cannot produce the required flashing light | Possible case power, button, firmware, or hardware fault |
| Lid movement or pressure changes disconnection | Possible lid sensor, hinge, alignment, or case fault |
These are diagnostic possibilities, not Apple failure codes. A replacement earbud or case may require Apple’s replacement setup rather than ordinary Bluetooth pairing.
When Apple service is the sensible next step
Arrange service if the case works only on external power, one earbud never shows charging after cleaning and reseating, the case cannot reset, the same fault occurs on multiple devices, or the problem follows a particular earbud or case. Visible physical or liquid damage is another reason to stop experimenting.
Apple’s service page, AirPods Repair and Service, says out-of-warranty estimates require inspection and vary by model, location, parts availability, taxes, shipping, and provider. Apple’s limited warranty generally covers manufacturing issues for one year; accidental damage and normal battery wear are generally excluded. Coverage and AppleCare benefits depend on your plan and region.
If only the case is defective and the earbuds are healthy, service or a case-level replacement can be more economical than replacing the set. A new purchase is a last resort after diagnosis; Apple listed AirPods Pro 3 at $249 in the U.S. on August 18, 2026, with a USB-C MagSafe Charging Case and no charging cable or power adapter included: Apple’s buying page.
