The Omega Speedmaster Calibre 321 is special because it brings back the movement family used in the Speedmaster’s 1957 debut, with a modern reconstruction rooted in historical plans and research. Its appeal is a particular mix of provenance, manual-winding column-wheel architecture and careful attention to the original—not a claim that it outperforms every contemporary Speedmaster.
What is the Calibre 321?
Calibre 321 is a manual-winding chronograph movement Omega says it first used in the Speedmaster in 1957. The company says it was also fitted to other Omega chronographs, including Seamaster models, and that original production ended in 1968. The calibre’s identity is closely tied to the early Speedmaster, but it was not exclusive to that watch.
Its design is part of the attraction. Omega describes the 321 as a column-wheel movement, with a monobloc column wheel machined from a single piece. That construction and the movement’s traditional hand-wound operation give it a different character from a modern automatic chronograph.
How strong is its connection to spaceflight?
Omega links the 321 to several specific Speedmaster milestones. In the company’s account, the ST 105.003 was used in NASA testing and qualification and was worn by Ed White during the first American spacewalk. Omega identifies the ST 105.012 as the first watch worn on the Moon, and says 321-powered Speedmasters were worn by Apollo 11 astronauts and across the six lunar missions. These are Omega’s historical claims, not independent findings presented here.

The point is not simply that the movement is old or associated with space. The modern 321 was reconstructed to evoke a calibre family connected to the early Speedmasters and those particular references.
How did Omega recreate the movement?
Omega announced the 321’s return on 8 January 2019. The company says the reconstruction used the second-generation 321 as its reference, drawing on original plans and historical research. The project took more than two years, according to Omega, and was conducted in secrecy under the codename “Alaska 11.” Omega also says its team used tomography to scan Gene Cernan’s Apollo 17 Speedmaster as part of the work. Omega’s 2019 announcement describes the effort as an attempt to reconstruct the movement as accurately as possible.

That method helps explain why the 321 matters to collectors: it is a new movement made with historical fidelity as a central goal, rather than merely a contemporary movement given a heritage name. Omega says the modern calibre is assembled in a dedicated workshop, with one watchmaker handling the movement’s assembly; the company’s product page also says the same watchmaker assembles the watch head and bracelet. Those are manufacturer descriptions of its process.
What are the modern Calibre 321 specifications?
For the current steel model, Omega publishes manual winding, a 55-hour power reserve and a frequency of 2.5 Hz. These are the manufacturer’s stated specifications, not independent test results. The movement’s importance is as much about its architecture and historical lineage as those headline figures.

Which Speedmaster Calibre 321 models are different?
The modern 321 is available in watches with notably different dimensions, materials and design references. These examples show why “the 321” does not identify one uniform case or configuration.
| Edition | Documented size and materials | Design context |
|---|---|---|
| Steel, ref. 311.30.40.30.01.001 | 39.7 mm; stainless-steel case; black ceramic bezel with white-enamel tachymeter; black step dial | Inspired by the third-generation model associated with Ed White’s 1965 spacewalk; includes the “Dot over 90” bezel detail. Omega steel model. |
| Platinum, ref. 311.93.42.30.99.001 | 42 mm; Pt950Au20 alloy; onyx dial with lunar-meteorite subdials; black ceramic bezel | The first modern watch powered by the reborn 321, unveiled in 2019. Omega platinum model. |
| Canopus Gold | 38.6 mm; 18K Canopus Gold case and bracelet; black onyx dial | A 2022 edition with vintage details and design references to the original Speedmaster. Swatch Group’s 2022 announcement. |
How does the 321 compare with the 3861 Moonwatch?
The choice is between different priorities, not a universal winner. The 321 emphasizes historical continuity and a manual-winding column-wheel design. Omega describes the 3861 as a Master Chronometer with a Co-Axial escapement and silicon Si14 balance spring. Consider the differences across these practical and collector-focused dimensions:

| Historical focus | Reconstruction of the original Speedmaster movement family, using historical plans and research. | Contemporary Moonwatch movement; the cited Omega comparison emphasizes its modern movement technology. |
| Movement architecture | Manual winding and column wheel. | Co-Axial escapement and silicon Si14 balance spring, per Omega. |
| Certification and specifications | Omega publishes 55 hours of power reserve and 2.5 Hz frequency for the current 321; those figures are manufacturer specifications. | Omega identifies it as a Master Chronometer; the cited comparison does not establish a directly comparable accuracy test result. |
| Case and market considerations | Modern variants include steel, platinum and Canopus Gold, with different dimensions; prices and regional availability are not established here. | Compare the particular reference’s dimensions, materials, local price and availability against the 321 model you are considering. |
Omega’s Moonwatch comparison describes the 3861’s movement features. For a purchase decision, compare the exact references and local offers rather than assuming the movements’ different histories settle questions of accuracy, service needs or value.
Who is the Calibre 321 for?
- Choose the 321 for historical fidelity if the original movement lineage and Omega’s reconstruction process are central to what you want from a Speedmaster.
- Consider the 3861 if contemporary movement credentials matter more, particularly its Master Chronometer designation and the Co-Axial and silicon components specified by Omega.
- Compare individual 321 references before choosing: the documented steel, platinum and Canopus Gold editions differ substantially in size, metal and dial design.
