Pixel Watch May 2024 Update Arrived With Security Patches—Here’s What Changed

Google’s May 2024 Pixel Watch update covered Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on Wear OS 4. Here’s the build, patch level, rollout caveats and what the security-only release did not change.

Google began rolling out the May 2024 security update for the original Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on May 6, 2024. It targets watches running Wear OS 4, installs as build TWD9.240505.001.A1, and raises the security-patch level to May 5, 2024. The official description is security maintenance, not a feature-packed release. This is a historical update; any 2026 Pixel Watch rollout is a separate release.

What the May 2024 update included

Google’s official update notice describes the package as the latest security patches. Reporting from 9to5Google and Droid Life identifies the same software for both Pixel Watch generations.

Detail May 2024 release
Rollout began May 6, 2024
Devices Google Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2
Software context Wear OS 4
Build TWD9.240505.001.A1
Security-patch level May 5, 2024
Wireless variants Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE versions used the same reported build
Payload Security patches; no major user-facing feature list

The May 5 patch level is the security baseline, not the release date: Google started distribution on May 6.

What it did not add

There was no announced redesign, new watch-face collection, app-grid change, Dynamic Color feature, battery enhancement, GPS improvement, health-sensor accuracy upgrade, or Fitbit feature expansion in this changelog. Those outcomes should not be inferred from a security patch.

  • The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
  • Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
  • Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
  • Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
  • Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

The previous April release had more visible changes, including Vibration watch and auto-brightness improvements. Those belong to April and should not be credited to the May package. Likewise, the larger feature-related changes associated with a June 2024 cycle were separate from this maintenance release.

How to check and install it

  1. Swipe down on the watch face to open Quick Settings.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Open System.
  4. Tap System updates.
  5. Review the displayed software build and security-patch information, then follow the on-screen installation prompt if the package is offered.

Put the watch on its charger before retrying an update, and keep the paired phone and watch connected through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. An update can download or install differently depending on model, carrier, and region.

Why the update may not appear immediately

Google uses staged rollouts. “Rolling out” on May 6 did not mean every Pixel Watch received a notification simultaneously. Carrier, hardware variant, and country can affect availability.

If your watch still says it is up to date

  • Leave it charging and check again later; a delayed offer is normal during a staged release.
  • Confirm that the watch is running Wear OS 4. The May 2024 package was published in that software context.
  • Retry on a stable Wi-Fi connection with the phone nearby and the Pixel Watch app connected.
  • Contemporary Android reports mentioned repeatedly tapping the watch icon or the “Your watch is up to date” screen to prompt another check. Treat that as an unofficial workaround, not a Google-supported procedure.
  • Some reports suggested temporarily disabling Bluetooth could encourage a Wi-Fi download. This is optional, device-dependent, and not required for a normal update.

Do not manually flash an image simply because an over-the-air offer is delayed. Google’s Pixel Watch OTA page is intended for personal-device software use, but the built-in updater is the safer choice for most owners.

  • Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]

How to verify that it installed

Return to Settings → System → System updates and check all three identifiers:

  • Build number: TWD9.240505.001.A1 identifies the installed package.
  • Security update: May 5, 2024 identifies the vulnerability-fix baseline.
  • Operating system: Wear OS 4 identifies the platform generation.

A different build or patch level does not automatically indicate a failed installation; it may mean the watch has a different release or has not yet received this historical package.

Should you install it?

Yes, if your Pixel Watch or Pixel Watch 2 is offered the May 2024 package. Security updates are intended to close vulnerabilities, and there is no feature-drop trade-off that warrants postponing this maintenance release. Install while charging over a reliable connection, then verify the identifiers above.

Keep expectations realistic: this update was not evidence of better battery life, sensor readings, GPS, Fitbit behavior, watch faces, or interface performance. Those require separate release notes or testing.

Historical context for current readers

The headline “Pixel Watch May Update” refers specifically to May 2024, not May 2026. Pixel Watch 3 was not part of this release, and the package should not be generalized to every Wear OS watch. Current software availability, support windows, and Google’s model lineup must be checked separately through Google’s Pixel Watch support site.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The May 6, 2024 Pixel Watch update was a quiet but worthwhile security release for Pixel Watch and Pixel Watch 2 on Wear OS 4. Look for build TWD9.240505.001.A1 and the May 5, 2024 patch level, but do not expect new features or a redesigned watch experience.
