Both Google’s Pixel Watch ecosystem and Garmin Connect provide ways to access or export sleep-related data, but their documented export routes differ. Google uses Takeout to create an archive of selected account data; Garmin says its full account export includes sleep. The official documentation reviewed does not establish that the resulting files contain equivalent fields or can be transferred directly between platforms.
For this comparison, “data ownership” means practical control: viewing, exporting or deleting records, managing future collection and deciding whether to share data. The cited policies do not settle legal ownership across jurisdictions.

What sleep data can you see?
Google Pixel Watch
Google’s account-data inventory lists a sleep log, sleep stages and a sleep score for Pixel Watch 5. Google lists earlier generations separately, so those Pixel Watch 5 items should not be assumed to apply identically to every model. Check the inventory for the watch generation you use: Google’s Pixel Watch and Fitbit data inventory.
For the documented Pixel Watch sleep-tracking setup, Google says the watch needs a minimum 20% charge and a connection to the Google Health mobile app. See Google Pixel Watch Help for setup details.

Garmin
Garmin’s account-export help confirms that sleep data is included in a full account export. That page does not enumerate every model’s sleep display or history retention, so check the manual for your particular watch if your question is what it shows on-device or in the app.
How do you export sleep history?
Google: create an account archive with Takeout
- Open Google’s Takeout instructions and start an export of your Google account data.
- Select the relevant data, then choose the delivery method and archive format. Google documents ZIP and TGZ archives.
- Request the archive and wait for the download link. Google says preparation may take from a few minutes to a few days; most people receive a link the same day.
Takeout is an account archive, not a documented sleep-only export tool. Google says selected date-range exports are unavailable for some data, so do not assume you can limit every included dataset to a particular period. Its help page also describes requesting access to information that is not available through the standard tools.

Garmin: choose an activity export or full account export
Garmin distinguishes an individual activity download from exporting all Garmin account data. Its full account export includes steps, sleep, stress, HRV and more. Follow Garmin’s export instructions for the route that matches what you need; the page does not establish a selectable sleep-history date range or a delivery-time estimate.
Garmin also says personal data can be viewed, exported or deleted through its data-management site. The route is described in Garmin’s personal-data help. Menu wording can vary by locale, so use the regional support page for your account.

What happens to your data after export?
Downloading a Google Takeout archive does not itself delete the data from Google’s servers. Exporting, deleting stored history and stopping future collection are separate actions.
For Pixel Watch, Google’s data inventory describes raw sensor data, including accelerometer and PPG data, being used to generate health and fitness metrics. It says collection can be stopped by signing out of Google Health on the watch or disconnecting the watch from the mobile app. Those steps concern collection; they are not documented as deleting historical account data. Review Google’s data inventory before changing the connection.

Garmin’s personal-data help provides a route to request deletion through its data-management site. Deleting data is different from downloading it; consult Garmin’s instructions for the account controls available to you.

Garmin’s Connect Privacy Policy states that activity data is “Private” by default. Users can change its visibility in account settings. The policy also says a third party can access data when the user authorizes it, and that sharing can be stopped through Garmin account settings. Once data is shared, the third party’s own privacy policy governs its handling. These statements concern Garmin Connect activity data and should not be generalized to every Garmin service or every type of account information. See the Garmin Connect Privacy Policy.

- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
For Google, the cited Pixel Watch inventory describes sensor-data collection controls, but does not provide a directly comparable statement about sleep-history visibility defaults in this material. Review the Google account and app controls that apply to your setup rather than inferring privacy settings from the export route.

The official documentation cited here does not establish that Google and Garmin exports use compatible formats, that one platform can import the other’s sleep records, or that their archives contain equivalent fields. Both ecosystems provide routes to access or export sleep-related data, but a downloadable archive is not evidence of a direct migration path.
Which ecosystem gives you more practical control?
| Question | Google Pixel Watch | Garmin Connect |
|---|---|---|
| What sleep data is explicitly documented? | Google lists sleep log, stages and score for Pixel Watch 5; generation-specific details vary. Google data inventory | Garmin confirms sleep is included in the full account export; the cited export help does not enumerate every model’s displayed history. Garmin export help |
| Documented export route | Google Takeout account archive; ZIP or TGZ. Google Takeout help | Individual activity export or all-account data export. Garmin export help |
| Can you specify a date range? | Some Google data does not support selected-period exports. Google Takeout help | Not stated in the cited export help. Garmin export help |
| Deletion or collection controls | Takeout does not delete the server copy; the Pixel Watch inventory describes ways to stop raw sensor collection. Takeout help; data inventory | Garmin describes viewing, exporting or deleting personal data through its data-management site. Personal-data help |
| Sharing controls documented here | Not stated in the cited Pixel Watch inventory. | Connect activity data is private by default; users can change visibility and revoke authorized sharing in account settings. Connect Privacy Policy |
The practical difference is the documented path, not proven superiority of one archive: Takeout packages selected Google account data, while Garmin explicitly describes both activity-level and all-account exports. If future portability is decisive, verify the exact account data, fields and file format available to you before relying on a cross-platform move. Neither export documentation establishes direct transfer.
