Google’s April 2025 Pixel Watch update was an unscheduled corrective release after the March Wear OS 5.1 update—not one identical package for every watch. Build BP1A.250305.019.W7 targeted delayed notifications and watch-face problems; a later build, BP1A.250305.019.W8, also rolled back a step-counting algorithm that had produced inflated totals for some users. The rollout covered Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3, but depended on the watch’s existing software and a phased device- and carrier-based release.
Why did Google release a Pixel Watch update in April?
The March 2025 Wear OS 5.1 release was followed by reports of bugs, prompting Google to issue an unscheduled fix rather than wait for the next normally expected quarterly update. Contemporary coverage described the April release as a surprise because the next regular update was expected in June; that schedule was an expectation at the time, not a promise that Google would never ship an emergency patch. Droid Life reported on the update on April 7, 2025, and Google announced W7 the next day.
The complication is that “the April update” refers to two builds with different purposes and eligibility paths.
What changed in W7 and W8?
| Build | Who it applied to | What changed |
|---|---|---|
| BP1A.250305.019.W7 | Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 already on the March release ending in .W3 | Fixed reported delayed notifications and problems adding or modifying watch faces through the Pixel Watch phone app. |
| BP1A.250305.019.W8 | Later rollout for users on the March or initial April release; also the delivery path for some watches still on the November 2024 release | Reverted the March step-counting algorithm after some users saw excessively high step totals. For watches still on November software, the later package delivered March Wear OS 5.1 changes with the step enhancement omitted. |
Google’s W7 announcement lists the notification and watch-face issues. Its W8 announcement describes the step-algorithm reversion. The March release itself brought Wear OS 5.1 changes, features, bug fixes, and performance updates; the April packages should not be mistaken for a new major Wear OS release. Google’s March update announcement covers that release.

Which problems did Google officially address?
Delayed notifications and watch-face changes
Google’s W7 fix list named two problems: some users received watch notifications late, and some could not add or modify watch faces from the Pixel Watch mobile app. W7 was principally a corrective package for these March-release problems, not a broadly described new security-patch level.
Inflated step totals
W8 reverted the enhanced step-counting algorithm introduced with the March update after reports that it recorded excessively high totals in some situations. That points to a software-algorithm issue as a possible explanation for affected counts; it does not establish that every inaccurate reading is caused by the algorithm, or guarantee perfect tracking in all circumstances. The March enhancement was removed rather than described as further tuned.

Are Scam Detection or Loss of Pulse Detection included?
Neither should be treated as one of Google’s documented W7 firmware fixes.
- Scam Detection: Contemporary reporting said some Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 owners saw the feature arrive alongside the April update. It was associated with compatible Pixel phones detecting conversation patterns linked to scams and relaying an alert to the watch. That report does not make Scam Detection one of the two fixes in Google’s W7 announcement, nor establish availability for every watch or paired phone. Droid Life’s report describes the observed rollout.
- Loss of Pulse Detection: This appears to have been a separate Personal Safety app rollout, rather than part of W7 or W8 firmware. Google community responses connected its availability to an app update rolling out independently; check for app updates on the watch or phone. Availability may vary by region. Google’s community response discusses the separate rollout.
How can you tell which build is installed?
Check the complete software version or build number in the watch’s system software information. The ending is more useful here than the displayed security-update date:

- .W3: the original March 2025 release.
- .W7: the initial April bug-fix package.
- .W8: the later April package, including the step-algorithm reversion or, for some watches still on November software, delayed delivery of March changes.
Record both the full build number and the displayed update date. A watch could still show March 5, 2025 as its update date after receiving W7, so that date alone does not prove the April build is missing. Google’s clarification addresses the date display.
Why might the update not appear?
Google began a phased rollout on April 8, 2025, with availability varying by carrier and device type. W7 was initially intended for supported Pixel Watch 1, 2, and 3 devices already on the March build ending in .W3; owners still on the November 2024 release could receive March changes through the later W8 path. A watch reporting that it is up to date may simply not have been reached yet. Google said owners would receive a notification when the update became available; the announcement did not promise an immediate manual-force method.

- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking

- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist
Do not assume every model or connection type received the same package at the same time. In particular, a Pixel Watch 3 owner on November software might not see the small W7 package described for March-build devices. The relevant question is which build ultimately appears, not whether all owners saw the same update prompt on the same day.

If notifications are delayed
- On the phone, open Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Google Pixel Watch and make sure Pixel Watch notifications are enabled.
- In the Pixel Watch app, open Notifications and check whether Mute notifications from phone or Hide silent notifications is enabled.
- On the watch, check Settings → Vibration → Silence watch when not being worn. Also check whether Bedtime, Do Not Disturb, or Theater mode is active.
- Confirm the watch has a Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or LTE connection appropriate to how you use it.
- If the problem continues, update software and follow Google’s guidance to unlink and pair the watch again. Re-pairing takes setup time and may require restoring preferences, but is less disruptive than starting with a factory reset.
Google’s notification troubleshooting guidance covers checking software and re-pairing. Persistent delays can have phone-permission, notification-control, watch-mode, connectivity, or pairing causes.
Quick Recap
If watch faces still cannot be changed
- Confirm that the watch and phone are running current software.
- Update the Google Pixel Watch app through Google Play.
- Reopen the phone app and retry adding or modifying the face.
- If the issue persists, unlink and re-pair the watch before considering a factory reset.
- If the problem survives re-pairing, contact Google support. The W7 announcement targeted the reported phone-app issue but does not guarantee identical behavior across every third-party face, app version, or account state.
