Most people do not need a pocket watch to keep time: a phone or wristwatch is more convenient. But pocket watches are still made, and they make sense for people who value traditional watchmaking, a formal accessory, or a collectible. Tissot lists current pocket-watch styles, Patek Philippe says it makes them in small numbers, and Seiko’s connection in the sources here is historical—not evidence of a current model.
Who needs a pocket watch today?
A pocket watch is a deliberate alternative to the convenience of a wristwatch, not a practical upgrade for most daily routines. It may suit someone who enjoys the ritual of taking a watch from a pocket, wants a traditional formal accessory, is choosing a keepsake, or collects timepieces. Those are possible reasons to own one, not evidence of broad current demand.
Patek Philippe puts the change in perspective: “Even though wristwatches have taken their place, they still delight connoisseurs of rare timepieces.” That is the brand’s view, rather than an independent measure of how many people use pocket watches today.
Are pocket watches still made?
Tissot: a listed collection with several styles
Tissot’s official pocket-watch collection says the company has created pocket watches since 1853 and that they are still manufactured today. The page lists Savonnette, Lépine, and pendant forms, with quartz and mechanical options. Its listings and availability can vary by market and date, so check the collection for your region before choosing a model.

Patek Philippe: small-number production
Patek Philippe says it continues to craft pocket watches in small numbers for connoisseurs. Its official collection page describes manually wound movements and Lépine and savonnette forms. This is a niche offering, not a claim that pocket watches have displaced wristwatches.
What do Seiko, Tissot and Patek Philippe each establish?
| Brand | What the cited official source supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Seiko | Seiko’s heritage timeline says the Ministry of Railways designated Seikosha, Seiko’s pocket watch, as its official railroad watch in 1929. | A current Seiko pocket-watch model or present-day retail availability. |
| Tissot | The brand’s official collection lists pocket watches in Savonnette, Lépine, and pendant styles, with quartz and mechanical options. | That every listed style or movement is available in every market at all times. |
| Patek Philippe | The brand says it makes pocket watches in small numbers; it describes manually wound movements and Lépine and savonnette forms. | Comparable prices, service costs, or a claim that its production represents the wider market. |
Seiko belongs in this comparison because of its railroad-watch history, not because the cited source verifies that it currently manufactures or sells pocket watches.

How to choose a pocket-watch style and movement
Case shape: Lépine, savonnette, or pendant
- Lépine: an open-face case. Patek Philippe describes its crown at 12 o’clock.
- Savonnette: a covered case, with the cover attached at 9 o’clock and crown at 3 o’clock, according to Patek Philippe.
- Pendant: a style also listed in Tissot’s collection.
These terms describe form, not a guarantee of a particular size, material, or level of durability. Check the specifications of the specific watch you are considering.
Movement: quartz or mechanical
Tissot’s collection includes both quartz and mechanical options; Patek Philippe describes its pocket watches as manually wound. A mechanical watch requires winding, while a quartz watch is battery-powered. Confirm the movement on the individual listing rather than assuming it from the case style or brand.

What to check before buying
For a new watch, verify the local listing, dimensions, movement, and what is included. For a vintage watch, condition and support matter as much as appearance: ask whether it runs, whether it has been serviced, and whether parts and qualified service are available. The sources above do not establish model-specific servicing costs or parts compatibility.
Prices are not established on a comparable basis for Seiko, Tissot, and Patek Philippe here. Check current local listings and confirm availability directly; do not infer a current Seiko offering from its historical railroad-watch role.

A notable Patek Philippe historical example
Patek Philippe’s account of its 1933 Graves pocket watch says it was commissioned by American banker Henry Graves Jr. and had 900 components and 24 complications. Those figures describe that historical watch, not a current product specification or a typical pocket watch.
