The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – 1972 Limited Edition is a 500-piece anniversary reissue released in 2022 to mark 50 years of Porsche Design. It modernizes the look of the 1972 Chronograph I with a black-coated titanium case and Porsche Design’s automatic WERK 01.140 chronograph movement. Porsche says all 500 were produced and sold; the US product page lists the watch at $7,700 before tax and has been marked sold out, though stock can change.
What the 1972 Limited Edition is
This is a specific 2022 model, not the original 1972 watch and not one of Porsche Design’s later Numbered Editions. Porsche Design released it in January 2022 as a 50th-anniversary reissue. The company says 500 pieces were produced and sold. Its 2026 history announcement likewise describes it as a 500-piece limited edition, with a classic Porsche Design logo and a closed case back.
The reissue preserves the original’s instrument-like, high-contrast character while updating its construction and movement. Porsche Design describes titanium and its COSC-certified WERK 01.140 as part of that technical update.
How it relates to the 1972 Chronograph I
Porsche Newsroom’s December 27, 2022 account attributes the original design to Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. In 1972, he and his brother Hans-Peter founded their design agency in Stuttgart; Porsche’s account says the first watch order came from Porsche for selected employees. The design drew on the 911 instrument panel, with a matte black surface, white numerals, a red seconds hand and a tachymeter intended to support legibility from different viewing angles. The watch later became available through Porsche dealerships.

Joern F. Kengelbach, writing in Porsche Newsroom / Christophorus No. 403, describes the idea this way: “In designing the watch, he was more interested in creating a high-precision instrument than a decorative accessory, which is why he looked to the 911’s instrument panel for inspiration.”

That is the price currently shown on the US product page, not a confirmed original launch price, and it does not establish pricing in other markets. The listing was reported as sold out; because stock status can change, check the official page for current availability rather than assuming a unit can still be ordered.

The name can be confused with other watches in the Chronograph 1 family. Porsche Design’s April 2022 release presents the All Black Numbered Edition as a later variant based on the 1972 Limited Edition, with upgraded details. It is a different edition, not another name for the 500-piece anniversary watch.

Porsche Design’s June 2026 announcement covers leather strap options for the All Black and All Titanium Numbered Editions. The straps are sold separately and use a quick-change mechanism, but that announcement does not confirm fitment on the 1972 Limited Edition. Check compatibility for item WAP0710090N072 before buying a strap.
