Before buying a pre-owned luxury watch, verify the seller, have the specific watch and its components authenticated, and get the condition, service history, warranty, water-resistance status, and return terms in writing. Box and papers can support a coherent record, but they do not prove authenticity on their own. Use these 10 questions to assess the listing before you pay.
1. Who is selling the watch, and what can you verify?
Confirm the seller’s identity and track record, and read the written return terms before committing. If the seller claims to be part of a brand’s certified pre-owned program, verify that status with the brand or an official retailer. For example, Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are available only through participating Official Rolex Retailers; that rule applies to Rolex’s program, not to the entire pre-owned market. Rolex program terms describe the program, while this buyer checklist outlines general seller checks.

2. Who authenticated this exact watch, and what did they inspect?
Ask who examined the specific watch and whether the inspection covered its movement and all components—not just its exterior or paperwork. Rolex says watches in its Certified Pre-Owned program return to Rolex workshops for authentication. That process is specific to the program; it is not a claim about every used Rolex or every pre-owned watch. The Watch Register recommends checking authenticity and all parts, including the movement, even when a watch comes with a box and papers. A loupe can help you view details, but it cannot replace qualified inspection.

3. Do the reference, serial number, and paperwork match?
Compare identifying details on the watch with the seller’s records and any accompanying documents. Ask for an invoice that names the seller and identifies the watch, including its serial number. Consistent details help establish a clear transaction record, but matching paperwork does not independently prove authenticity. The Watch Register’s due-diligence guidelines are a useful reference for this check.
4. What is its condition, and have parts been replaced or altered?
Ask for clear photographs and a written account of wear, repairs, refinishing, and replacements. Find out which components are original and which have been replaced, and ask for records of any work. This matters because a watch may have been repaired or returned to a particular specification without every part being original.

Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned program aims to preserve a watch’s integrity but may return it to its original state using genuine replacement parts. Ask what was done to the individual watch rather than assuming all program watches have the same history. Rolex’s certification-process description explains this program-specific approach.
5. When was it last serviced, and what work might be due?
Request dated service records and the name of the provider. If records are absent, consider arranging an assessment by a qualified watchmaker before buying, or make sure the return terms allow time for one. Missing records do not by themselves establish that a watch needs service, but they leave its recent maintenance less clear.

Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches receive a full service as part of that program. Do not assume the same service history or work applies to other used watches—or to a watch sold outside the program. See Rolex’s certification-process description and the buyer checklist.
6. What warranty or guarantee covers this watch?
Read the terms for the specific watch. Establish who provides the coverage, when it begins, how long it lasts, what it covers, what it excludes, how repairs are handled, and where it applies. A warranty label alone does not answer these questions.

7. Can you rely on the water resistance?
Ask for the date and result of a water-resistance test, and get a clear statement of the use the seller supports. Do not infer swimming or diving suitability from a model name, appearance, or a rating without knowing the watch’s current condition. Rolex explicitly makes exceptions for the water resistance of some older watches in its Certified Pre-Owned program. Rolex’s certification-process description sets out that program-specific caveat.

Prefer a payment method that leaves a record of the transaction. 9. Is the asking price fair for this reference and condition?
Compare listings for the exact reference, then account for condition, originality, service documentation, included items, and seller protections. A lower price may come with less documentation or weaker return terms; a higher one may reflect a different condition or a program-specific service and guarantee. No price comparison is meaningful unless the watches and sale terms are sufficiently alike.
There is no reliable current price benchmark established here, so this guide cannot say whether a particular asking price is a bargain. Use current, reference-specific comparables and weigh the differences rather than treating the asking price alone as evidence of value.
10. Do the box, papers, and accessories matter?
They can matter to completeness and to your own preferences. Check whether the listing includes the items shown or promised, such as bracelet links, and make sure any documents correspond to the watch. But a full set is supporting context, not proof that the watch is authentic or that every component is correct. The Watch Register recommends checking the watch and all its parts even when box and papers are present. The available evidence does not establish a universal resale premium for a full set. How to compare two listings
Compare like with like, using the same reference. Look across the factors together rather than letting one reassuring feature—such as papers or a warranty label—settle the decision.
