For a pre-owned IWC Aquatimer, start with the bezel design and the exact reference—not with a model-family water-resistance figure or an old price listing. Five references make a useful cross-section: the original 812, the titanium 3536, the 3548 Cousteau Divers, the 3568, and the later 329001. Their features below follow the descriptions in Ben Hodges’s May 1, 2020 selection; that article is a historical guide, not a report on current stock or prices.
How the five Aquatimers differ
| Reference | What stands out | Evidence and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 812 (IW812 AD) | Original Aquatimer; internal rotating bezel operated by a second crown | IWC dates its unveiling to 1967. Hodges describes a 38 mm Super-compressor case; that size is his account. |
| 3536 | Titanium case and bracelet; external bezel; 2,000 m water-resistance rating | Introduction date and rating are reported by Hodges, not confirmed here by an official IWC specification page for this reference. |
| 3548 / Cousteau Divers | Double-crown design, 60-minute clicking bezel, deep-blue dial and orange hands | Hodges describes 42 mm steel or titanium versions. These are descriptions of the model, not the condition or availability of a particular watch. |
| 3568 | External rotating bezel | Hodges describes it as a short-lived design from the early 2010s; no further specifications are established here. |
| 329001 | Knurled external bezel paired with an internal rotating scale | Hodges presented it as the modern pick in 2020. That does not establish its status in IWC’s current collection. |
1. Reference 812: the original internal-bezel design
IWC says it unveiled its first Aquatimer at the Basel Watch Show in 1967. Rather than placing the timing bezel outside the crystal, the design put it beneath the glass and used a second crown to turn it. IWC explains the arrangement in its Aquatimer history: “Instead of a classic external bezel for setting the dive time, the watch featured a rotating bezel under the glass that was operated using a second crown.”
The watch used calibre 8541 and was rated water-resistant to 200 metres, according to IWC’s account of reference IW812 AD. Hodges describes the first reference as a 38 mm Super-compressor. Because that case-size detail comes from his article, treat it as an attributed description rather than an independently verified specification.
2. Reference 3536: titanium and an external bezel
Hodges’s account places the 3536’s introduction in 1997 and highlights its titanium case and bracelet, external bezel, and 2,000-metre water-resistance rating. He preferred the double-crown look of other Aquatimers, but the 3536’s layout offers a clear contrast with the original internal bezel.

The date and rating above are reported by the 2020 article; an official IWC specification page for this exact reference was not located in the sources used here. Do not assume that the rating describes a pre-owned example’s present water resistance.
3. Reference 3548: Cousteau Divers details
Hodges names the 3548 Cousteau Divers as his personal favorite. His selection describes 42 mm steel or titanium cases, a return to the double-crown arrangement, a 60-minute clicking bezel, deep-blue dial, and orange hands. Those cues can help identify the version a listing claims to offer, but confirm the exact reference and configuration from the watch and its documentation.

4. Reference 3568: a short-lived external-bezel turn
In Hodges’s account, the 3568 briefly returned to an external rotating bezel in the early 2010s and did not remain in the line for long. The available source description does not establish further specifications, so check the exact watch’s reference and records rather than transferring details from another Aquatimer.
5. Reference 329001: two-part bezel arrangement
The 329001 stood out in Hodges’s 2020 selection for combining a knurled external bezel with an internal rotating scale. Although the article called it the current reference at the time, that is not confirmation of the current IWC collection. For a pre-owned purchase, focus on the specific example’s stated reference and configuration.

What to check before buying one pre-owned
Aquatimer specifications vary substantially by reference. IWC’s official past-collection pages, for example, list a 44 mm stainless-steel IW376801 chronograph at 30 bar with a 44-hour power reserve; a 41 mm titanium IW371918 at 12 bar and 44 hours; and a 49 mm Ceratanium IW379405 at 10 bar and 68 hours. These are specifications for those exact models—not substitutes for documentation of the five references above or evidence of any individual watch’s current condition.

- Confirm the reference and configuration. Match the reference number in the listing to the watch and its documentation. Check whether the described bezel, case material, and bracelet or strap fit that particular version.
- Verify specifications for that exact watch. Use model-specific documentation for dimensions, water resistance, movement, and complications. Do not apply a figure from one Aquatimer to another.
- Assess the individual watch’s condition. An original water-resistance rating does not certify a pre-owned watch today. Ask what condition checks or servicing have been performed and review the available records.
- Review provenance and what is included. Check the seller, documentation, and any included accessories, and make sure the listing’s claims match the watch being offered.
- Check availability and price at the time you shop. The 2020 article’s marketplace links do not establish live inventory or current prices. No transaction or market data here supports a price range, scarcity claim, or appreciation estimate.
