The Vacheron Constantin Chronograph 47101 is a wrist game for collectors who value a restrained vintage-inspired chronograph, a hand-wound caliber and the variety of documented gold and platinum versions. Its appeal is tangible; whether a particular example is worth its price depends on its condition, originality, provenance and sale terms—not on a universal market value.
What is the Vacheron Constantin 47101?
Also known as the Chronographe Historique or Les Historiques, reference 47101 is a neo-vintage chronograph conceived as a tribute to Vacheron Constantin’s 1940s reference 4178. Phillips and Christie’s place its introduction in 1989. Phillips describes it as paying tribute to the brand’s archives (Phillips auction catalogue); the wording is catalogue copy, not a statement attributed to a named brand representative.
Published accounts disagree about when production ended: Sotheby’s places it at approximately 1999, while Christie’s gives 2004. Without stronger manufacturer documentation, neither date should be treated as definitive. The safe description is a reference introduced in the late 1980s and represented in auction records from the 1990s.
What makes the watch appealing?
Two-register chronograph display
Christie’s describes a silvered matte dial with an outer tachymeter scale and two subsidiary dials: constant seconds and a 30-minute chronograph register (Christie’s catalogue description). The layout keeps the display relatively restrained while retaining the key timing functions.

Manual caliber 1140
Auction records identify manual-winding caliber 1140 or 1140CHR, with 21 jewels. Sotheby’s describes caliber 1140 as a reworked Nouvelle Lemania 2310 ébauche (Sotheby’s lot entry). That lineage identifies the movement’s basis; it does not establish that every example has identical finishing, condition or service history.
Gold and platinum choices
Documented examples include 18K yellow gold and platinum. Case diameters in the cited catalogues vary: Phillips lists 36 mm for a 1993 platinum example and a 1997 gold example, while Sotheby’s lists 37 mm for a circa-1995 platinum watch. The available records do not explain the discrepancy, so check the measurement and configuration of the specific watch rather than assuming a single size.

Phillips also reports an extra-rare salmon-dial platinum variant and a 25-piece platinum edition with black dial for the Taiwanese market. Treat those details as auction-house reporting rather than a manufacturer-confirmed production total; they do not establish how many 47101s were made overall (Phillips catalogue essay).
Is the 47101 worth its asking price?
One Phillips example—a 1997 yellow-gold 47101/04—realized CHF 47,880 against an estimate of CHF 10,000–20,000. That is a single auction result, and the captured catalogue information does not establish the auction year. Chrono24 showed nine listings when accessed in 2026, with asking prices across gold and platinum examples (Chrono24 listings). Those listings are a changing snapshot, not completed sales or a stable valuation range.

Do not compare the auction result directly with a seller’s asking price without accounting for the sale date, buyer’s premium, currency, condition, dial, originality, documented service, accessories and seller terms. The available evidence establishes neither a universal current value nor an investment case.

- Do the case, dial and movement signatures and serial information align with the claimed configuration and available documentation?
- Is an archive extract present, and does it correspond to the watch being offered? An extract is provenance evidence, not a substitute for inspecting condition or originality.
- What service work is documented, by whom and when? Ask to have the chronograph’s functions checked by a qualified specialist.
- Do the case, dial, hands and buckle appear appropriate and original to the stated configuration, or are replacements or refinishing disclosed?
- What exactly is included? Distinguish a watch-only sale from one with documented box, papers or archive extract; examples vary in their accessories.
- What are the seller’s inspection, return and auction terms, and what costs apply beyond the stated price?
Wrist game or crying shame?
Wrist game, if you want a manually wound, two-register chronograph with a clear link to Vacheron Constantin’s earlier design history and have found a well-documented example at a price justified by its specific condition and configuration. Crying shame only if the appeal rests on an assumed rarity, a single auction result or an unverified claim about value. The reference has real design and movement interest; the individual watch still has to earn its price.
