Before buying a pre-owned watch, establish exactly which watch is being offered, compare its visible condition with the listing, check its records and ownership story, assess the seller, and document the deal. Treat appearance, mechanical operation, service history, water resistance, and authenticity as separate questions. If any important answer remains uncertain, pause for an appropriately qualified independent watchmaker or appraiser.
1. Identify the exact watch and configuration
Write down the brand, model, reference, stated configuration, and everything included in the sale. Compare those details with the watch itself and any documents the seller provides. Serial-number conventions and component configurations vary, so do not apply one brand’s rules to every watch or reject a detail based on memory alone. If a part or document seems inconsistent, ask the seller to explain it and seek independent advice if the explanation does not resolve the question. Watch Capital’s Rolex-focused checklist, dated September 26, 2026, offers specialist guidance, but it is not a universal authentication standard.

2. Inspect visible condition against the listing
In even, good light, compare the watch with the seller’s written description and photographs. Look at the case, crystal, dial, bezel, bracelet, and clasp. Note scratches, dents, chips, visible damage, uneven wear, or details that need explanation. Ask directly whether any parts have been replaced, or whether the watch has been polished or refinished. A broad label such as “excellent” is less useful than a specific account of what is and is not marked.

3. Ask about operation, service, and water resistance separately
A clean-looking case does not tell you whether the movement is healthy, how accurately the watch runs, when it was last serviced, or whether it is water-resistant now. Ask whether it has been assessed, when and by whom, and what supports the seller’s answer. Review service records for the work performed, date, and provider; check that identifying details connect the record to the watch offered. UBS’s 2022 Collectors’ Compass also treats condition and service history as important considerations for collectors.
Do not infer current water resistance from appearance or from the fact that the watch was previously worn in water. If water resistance matters to you, ask what test was performed, when, and by whom, and have the claim assessed by a qualified professional.

4. Check provenance and supporting paperwork
Ask the seller for the ownership history and record what they say. Claims about a notable previous owner or a watch’s special history should be supported by evidence, not repeated as established fact. UBS notes that photographs or correspondence from an original owner can help support a provenance claim for a vintage watch.

Compare the watch’s identifying details with any warranty card, receipt, service paper, or certificate. Confirm exactly which box and accessories are included. Matching records can corroborate a watch’s story, but a box, card, serial match, or service record alone does not establish authenticity or present condition. The Watch Register’s 2023 buyer due-diligence guidance likewise recommends gathering ownership information and checking the watch rather than relying on papers alone.

5. Check reported-theft status
The Watch Register recommends checking every luxury pre-owned watch, including examples sold with a box and papers, and advises buyers to request a certificate in their own name. Treat a result as a status check made at a particular time: the guidance recommends a fresh search if the watch is sold again because its status can change. A clear database result is one useful check, not proof of authenticity or conclusive proof that no theft report exists.
6. Assess the seller and put the deal in writing
Obtain the seller’s full contact details and record the ownership history they provide. Before payment, make sure the written terms accurately state the watch’s condition, included items, and transaction details. Retain an invoice identifying both seller and watch, including its serial number where applicable. The Watch Register recommends secure payment after checks, but the protections available depend on where and how you buy. Return rights and legal remedies vary by jurisdiction and transaction type; check the applicable local rules rather than assuming a universal right to return a watch.

7. Compare price only after matching the watch
Compare like with like: start with the same reference and configuration, then consider visible condition and originality, service history and expected servicing, provenance and supporting documents, included accessories, seller assurance, and written terms. UBS identifies condition, rarity, and provenance among the factors collectors weigh. For a current price check, use recent completed sales of the same reference in similar condition; the sources cited here do not establish live comparable-sale prices.
As historical context only, UBS’s 2022 guide reports that Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona, reference 6239, sold for $18 million in 2017. The guide connects the watch’s significance with its model, documented ownership since 1969, and unrestored original condition. That is a notable historical auction result, not a typical price, current valuation, or market average.
8. Know when to pause for a professional assessment
If questions about identity, components, condition, operation, records, or the seller’s explanation remain unresolved, pause the purchase and consult an appropriately qualified independent watchmaker or appraiser. Agree on the scope before proceeding: a visual review is not necessarily a movement inspection, and an independent assessment is not the same as brand authorization. UBS recommends considering a third-party second opinion for significant purchases.
What a brand-specific certified program does—and does not—tell you
Rolex says its Certified Pre-Owned watches are second-hand Rolex watches at least two years old, offered by official jewelers participating in the program. Rolex describes them as authenticated in its workshops, fully serviced, and covered by a two-year international guarantee; it also describes verification of original configuration and testing. Rolex notes exceptions to water resistance and original precision for some older models. The program is available only through certain authorized points of sale, so check the current official retailer locator and local availability. Its procedures and guarantees apply to that program, not to pre-owned watches generally. Rolex attributes the statement “We would never sell a single timepiece that is not technically faultless and that does not give full and complete satisfaction” to its founder, Hans Wilsdorf; it is an official Rolex statement, not an independent assessment of watches sold outside the program. Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program information and Rolex’s description of its verification process explain the brand’s scope.
