Those accounts date from 2009 to 2014; current operations, catalog and availability have not been verified. What Project X Designs changed on Rolex watches
Contemporary coverage characterized Project X Designs’ work as changing a Rolex’s appearance rather than its functionality. A 2009 profile described bespoke services and limited-edition designs that could change color, finish and shape. One reported Submariner customization removed the crown guards, fitted a black bezel insert and applied black DLC coating. RolexMagazine.com’s 2009 feature identifies Daniel Bourn as the owner and designer.
A separate 2009 account described DLC treatment on components including the case, caseback, bezel, bracelet, hands and rotor, as well as enamel caseback engraving. It also mentioned crown-guard removal and gemstone choices for a bezel detail. These are descriptions of historical offerings, not confirmation that the same work is available now. In 2014, a French-language article described both catalogued custom watches and made-to-order work, and named the Black-Out and limited-edition collections. That account establishes what was reported at the time, not a current catalog. The Watch Observer’s 2014 article is the dated reference.

What is known about PXD SS1, SS2 and SS3
These names appear in historical coverage, but the available descriptions do not have the same level of detail or authority. In particular, SS2 and SS3 specifications come from an enthusiast forum post, not an official specification sheet.

The model descriptions suggest different treatments, but they are not enough to verify a complete parts list, production totals, durability, or whether an individual watch offered for sale matches an edition description. No reliable current production, sales or customer-outcome statistics are established in the cited coverage.

Is Project X Designs still operating or selling watches?
The direct descriptions available here are historical, mainly from 2009–2014. They do not verify whether the company currently operates, has a live catalog, offers customization, or has any named watch in stock. That uncertainty is not evidence that the business has closed. Treat old prices, stock claims, service terms and websites as historical unless independently confirmed by a current seller.
A 2009 statement attributed to Bourn gives context for the company’s approach at that time: “For our bespoke Design Service & Limited Edition Designs we currently only use new Rolex watches. This ensures the quality and accuracy of the product is maintained.” It is a dated description of the company’s practice then, not confirmation of present-day sourcing or policy. What third-party customization means for Rolex warranty and service
Rolex states that it does not approve third-party customizations. Its terms say unauthorized alterations or modifications, or non-Rolex parts, cancel the warranty; its guarantee FAQ also excludes watches materially modified with non-genuine parts. The exact coverage depends on Rolex’s stated terms and the watch’s circumstances, so this should not be generalized into a separate legal conclusion. Consult Rolex’s terms and guarantee FAQ for the applicable conditions.
Rolex says its five-year guarantee applies subject to purchase and guarantee-card conditions, and that new genuine watches are sold exclusively through Official Rolex Jewelers. Those jewelers warrant authenticity and provide the five-year international guarantee. A customized watch should not be described as Rolex-approved on the basis of Project X’s historical coverage. How to assess a Project X custom Rolex before buying
Because current availability and individual watch histories are unverified, evaluate the specific watch and seller rather than relying on an edition name or old article. Ask for documentation and independent authentication before committing.

- Verify the seller. For a new genuine Rolex, Rolex directs buyers to an Official Rolex Jeweler. For a pre-owned custom watch, check the seller’s identity, reputation, return terms and whether the seller can substantiate the watch’s provenance. Rolex buying guidance.
- Authenticate the underlying watch. Ask a qualified watch professional to assess the watch and its components. Rolex’s FAQ addresses how to ensure authenticity, but a custom exterior may make originality and provenance especially important to establish. Rolex authenticity and guarantee FAQ.
- Get the modifications in writing. Request a component-by-component account of what was changed, which parts are genuine Rolex, who performed the work, and whether removed original parts are included. Confirm that the actual watch matches any claimed PXD edition; historical descriptions alone do not authenticate an example.
- Clarify warranty and future service. Ask for the watch’s guarantee card and service history, then confirm directly with Rolex or an authorized service provider what coverage, if any, remains and whether they will service it in its current condition. Do not assume an original Rolex guarantee continues unchanged after modification.
- Compare like with like on price. No current Project X price or market premium is established by these sources. Compare the asking price with an authenticated, similar unmodified Rolex and account for provenance, modification quality, included original parts and service support; the available evidence does not establish which is the better value.
