The Chinese watch community came to call him the “Tourbillon Doctor.” In his own watches, that repairer’s understanding of how mechanisms work meets a designer’s instinct to put them on display—most clearly in the balance wheel he places prominently on the dial of Facing The Sky.
From mould-making to the “Tourbillon Doctor”
In a May 20, 2025 interview with MONOCHROME, Qian said he was born in Ninghai, Zhejiang, and lives and works in Dongguan, Guangdong. He recalled being fascinated by mechanical structures as a child. His first profession was mould-making, where he learned to produce precision components.
He later taught himself about watch movements through books and repeated disassembly, assembly and repair. The nickname “Tourbillon Doctor” grew out of that repair work; it describes his reputation among watch enthusiasts, not a formal title or award. Qian said that years spent maintaining and repairing watches eventually led him toward aesthetic expression and original creation. As he put it, “Interest is the greatest teacher.”
Why his watches put mechanics in view
Qian describes his approach as “modern utilitarianism,” with an emphasis on clear visual hierarchy and wearability. He says architectural forms and geometric lines in nature inform his designs. That is his account of his own style, rather than a claim of critical consensus.

Across the watches described in his official catalog, the mechanism is not merely hidden behind the dial: its placement and movement help define the watch’s appearance. Facing The Sky brings a balance wheel to the front; the Double Balance Wheel places twin balance wheels on a shared axis, one visible from the dial side and the other from the case back.
Facing The Sky: a concept refined over time
The original idea
Qian told MONOCHROME that the first Facing The Sky was a 43 mm prototype with an offset time display, a front-mounted balance wheel and a gooseneck regulation system. He recalled, “I completed my first ‘Facing the Sky’ piece 20 years ago, and it has been a process of continuous refinement since.” That is his recollection, published in 2025; it does not independently establish when a commercially released watch first appeared.

Facing The Sky 2.0
The 2025 interview describes Facing The Sky 2.0 as a more compact 39 mm steel watch, measuring 12.5 mm high including the crystal. Qian reported a rate of 18,000 vibrations per hour and a 40-hour power reserve. His official catalog identifies its hand-finished movement as caliber AB-02-2.0 and describes a total production of 12 pieces offered by subscription. Fratello’s April 27, 2025 introduction reported a price of US$30,000 at publication; that historical figure is not a current quote.
The shift from the 43 mm prototype to the 39 mm 2.0 matters beyond the numbers: the defining front-facing balance remains, while the later case is smaller. The available descriptions establish the dimensions and concept, but do not provide a like-for-like wearability comparison across all Qian’s models.

Other designs and collaborations
Double Balance Wheel
Qian’s official catalog describes the AB-03 Double Balance Wheel as having two balance wheels on a shared axis, with one on each side of the watch. The arrangement makes symmetry and visibility part of the mechanical architecture. The catalog does not give a comparable set of dimensions, edition details or a current price for this model.
Split-Seconds Chronograph
Fratello’s January 26, 2026 hands-on report describes a 40 mm stainless-steel case, 14.5 mm thickness and a heavily modified ETA base. It says the rattrapante mechanism and dial layout were authored in-house. The report lists CHF 29,000 and says the colorway it covered was limited to five pieces; both the price and edition count belong to that dated report, not a current availability statement.

Behrens Master 1 “Kung Fu”
Qian confirmed his collaboration with Behrens in the 2025 MONOCHROME interview. Phillips’s Fall 2026 auction catalog describes the “Kung Fu” model’s arrow-shaped regulator and bi-axial power-reserve display as inspired by plum-blossom stakes used in martial-arts practice, and identifies the offered model as part of a 90-piece edition. Those details describe the auction-catalog model, not current retail stock.

Qian’s official catalog groups his work into five families: AB-01 Small Seconds, AB-02 Facing The Sky variants, AB-03 Double Balance Wheel, AB-04 Split Seconds Chronograph, and AB-05 Skylight Original & Sun. The catalog describes production as extremely small but gives no publication date on the page. Specifications and prices are not stated there on an equivalent basis for every family, so the models cannot be ranked through a complete apples-to-apples comparison.

Facing The Sky is the clearest expression of that approach, but the double-balance architecture, chronograph and Behrens collaboration show that his work extends beyond one signature idea.
