Quartz chronographs generally keep time more accurately than automatic chronographs, and their main upkeep is battery replacement plus periodic inspection. Automatic chronographs run on a self-winding mechanical movement whose rate shifts with conditions, and they need periodic movement servicing instead of battery changes. Cost depends on the brand, the country, and how much of the watch a service covers, so no single figure describes either type.
How accuracy differs
Seiko’s official accuracy guidance states that, generally speaking, quartz watches keep time more accurately than mechanical watches. The same page explains that mechanical rate changes with temperature, magnetism, shocks, position, wear time, and winding state (this is an English rendering of Seiko’s Japanese-language page; the caveat that actual results depend on the individual watch and how it is used applies). Seiko accuracy guidance
Quartz: read the tolerance in the movement’s manual
A quartz chronograph’s accuracy is usually stated as a tolerance for a specific movement. The Certina PRECIDRIVE 1/100-second quartz chronograph manual gives a precision of around ±10 seconds per year under normal conditions of use. That figure belongs to the PRECIDRIVE movement family and should be checked against the manual for your exact model. It is not a promise for all quartz chronographs. Certina PRECIDRIVE manual
Automatic: judge the daily rate over time
Seiko advises assessing a mechanical watch’s daily rate over at least a week to ten days rather than drawing a conclusion from a single day. A practical way to do this:
#1 Best Overall
- SEIKO WATCH – Seiko SSB427 chronograph wristwatch.
- MOVEMENT – Quartz chronograph format.
- DIAL – Blue dial design.
- MODEL REFERENCE – SSB427 identifies the watch.
- WATCH DIAMETER – 41.5 mm.
- Compare the watch against a reliable time reference at the same time each day.
- Record the difference in seconds for at least seven consecutive days, keeping the watch in the same position and wear pattern where possible.
- Divide the total gain or loss by the number of days to get an average daily rate, and compare that with the rate in the movement’s documentation.
A single day’s reading can reflect a temperature change, a knock, or the time since the watch was last fully wound, so it says little about the movement’s typical behavior.
Accuracy at a glance
| Factor | Quartz chronograph | Automatic chronograph |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of the accuracy claim | Manufacturer tolerance for the movement, for example ±10 seconds per year for the Certina PRECIDRIVE family under normal use | Average daily rate, which varies with movement, condition, and use |
| Main influences named by the maker | Movement-specific; confirm in the manual | Temperature, magnetism, shocks, position, wear time, winding state (Seiko) |
| How to check performance | Compare readings with the published tolerance over time | Measure daily rate over at least 7 to 10 days |
Maintenance: batteries versus movement service
Quartz: battery care and inspection
Jaeger-LeCoultre advises replacing the battery when a quartz watch stops. It also warns that a used battery left inside may leak and damage the movement, so a dead battery should not be left in the case. Jaeger-LeCoultre service guidance

Battery life is not a fixed number. It varies by movement, and chronograph functions draw power and can shorten it, so use the model’s own guidance. CHANEL’s care page gives a 2 to 7 year battery life for its watches, which is its own recommendation rather than a rule for the category. CHANEL care
Certina’s PRECIDRIVE manual recommends inspection every 3 to 4 years through an approved representative or retailer, which is how the manufacturer keeps the movement within its stated precision over time.

Automatic: periodic movement service
An automatic chronograph avoids battery replacement, but its mechanical movement may need adjustment, cleaning, lubrication, and worn-part replacement. Intervals are not universal, and makers word them differently. Hamilton states that a precise interval for servicing cannot be determined, which is why its guidance points owners back to the condition of the watch. Hamilton service
Service intervals by brand
| Brand (source reviewed) | Stated interval | What the interval covers |
|---|---|---|
| Certina PRECIDRIVE manual | Inspection every 3 to 4 years | Inspection through an approved representative or retailer; movement family specific |
| Bvlgari after-sales page | Service every 4 to 5 years | Brand-wide recommendation, not chronograph-specific |
| CHANEL care page | Five years between movement services | CHANEL’s own recommendation for its watches |
| Rolex care and service FAQ | Approximately every 10 years | Depends on model and real-life use, per Rolex |
| Hamilton service page | No fixed interval; a precise interval cannot be determined | Condition-based guidance from the maker |
Rolex’s guidance is worded as “approximately every 10 years depending on the model and real-life usage,” and should not be read as a universal schedule for automatic chronographs. Rolex care and service FAQ

Water resistance applies to both
Hamilton recommends annual water-resistance checks and notes that seals can age and that knocks can impair water resistance. The advice applies to quartz and automatic models alike, and it is a reasonable check for any chronograph that is worn in water, sweat, or rough conditions. Hamilton service

Reading the cost figures correctly
- Scope drives the number more than movement type. A battery-only service and a full chronograph service differ by a wide margin at the same brand.
- Lists may exclude parts. LONGINES notes that additional components may be charged separately, and its full service covers disassembly, cleaning, lubrication, worn-part replacement, and rate and water-resistance checks.
- Currency and tax basis change the comparison. Hamilton’s figures exclude VAT, Bvlgari’s and LONGINES’ exclude taxes, and Patek Philippe’s are in Swiss francs.
- Quartz figures do not include the battery itself, which is a recurring cost on quartz models.
Whether quartz is cheaper over time
A lifetime cost claim requires the purchase price, the local service rate, the scope of each service, the number of services over the watch’s life, and battery costs. The published prices above do not establish which type costs less to own, and the research behind this article identified no independent, category-wide ownership-cost figure.
Quick Recap
Choosing between them
- If precision and simple upkeep matter most: a quartz chronograph fits, provided you check the tolerance in the manual for that exact model.
- If you prefer a self-winding mechanical movement: an automatic chronograph suits you if you accept periodic movement service and use the brand’s interval or condition-based advice.
- If the watch will see water or frequent use: budget for water-resistance checks on either type, and factor in battery replacement for quartz or service intervals for automatic.
- If you are comparing service quotes: confirm the same scope, currency, and tax treatment before comparing prices.
Before you approve a service
- Ask whether the quote covers battery replacement only, partial service, or full service.
- Ask whether rate testing and water-resistance testing are included.
- Ask which parts, such as gaskets or crowns, would be billed separately.
- Ask whether the watch will be serviced through the brand’s authorized network, which is the route the manufacturers listed above direct owners to.
