Quick-release watch straps are generally easier to change: a small lever retracts the spring bar by hand, so compatible straps can be removed and fitted without a separate tool. Conventional spring-bar straps usually require a forked tool and more careful maneuvering. The easier option still depends on your watch’s attachment design, lug width and access to the bar—quick-release does not mean universal fit.
How the two strap systems compare

The convenience difference is practical, not a measured time advantage: manufacturer instructions describe procedures, but do not establish a comparative change-time figure or scratch-risk rate.

How to change a quick-release strap
- Turn the watch over and locate the small sliding lever on the spring bar.
- Pull the lever toward the middle of the strap to retract the bar end from its socket, then lift the strap away.
- To fit the replacement, put one bar end into its socket. Pull the lever to retract the other end, position the strap between the lugs, and release the lever.
- Look for the pin end to enter its hole, then gently tug the strap to check that it is secure before wearing the watch.

How to change a conventional spring-bar strap
- Support the watch so it cannot shift, and make sure you can reach the strap and lug.
- Use the forked end of a spring-bar tool to compress or lever one end of the bar out of its lug hole. Once the end is free, remove the strap.
- For the replacement, seat one end of the appropriate spring bar in a lug hole, then guide the other end into the opposite hole.
- Check that both ends are seated and gently test the strap before wearing the watch.
Breitling’s maintenance guidance and TAG Heuer’s service FAQs caution that self-replacement requires care because the case can be marked. If the tool is hard to position or you are not comfortable working close to the case, ask a jeweler or service center to change the strap.

Check compatibility before choosing or buying a strap
- Measure lug width. Nixon says replacement-band compatibility depends on the lug measurement; appearance alone is not enough. See Nixon’s watch-band guide.
- Check the specific watch model and attachment. Suunto notes that strap mechanisms differ between models and directs owners to model-specific compatibility information in its strap-change guidance.
- Do not assume proprietary systems interchange. Garmin states that QuickFit and Quick Release bands are different and are not interchangeable. Check the relevant model’s band compatibility information.
- Treat the Suunto 7 size as model-specific. Suunto says its 24 mm quick-release straps fit Suunto 7; that is not a general guarantee that every 24 mm strap fits every watch. See Suunto’s Suunto 7 compatibility guide.
Lug width is only one part of the fit. The watch’s geometry and attachment system must also match, and any replacement must be secured correctly.
