Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn most Wear OS watches, tap a software-version or build-number entry several times to reveal Developer options. Then enable ADB debugging; for a wireless connection, enable Wireless debugging too. “Android Wear” is the platform’s former name, so these current steps use Wear OS menus, which vary by manufacturer and software version.
What Developer options and ADB debugging do
Developer options expose advanced testing and diagnostic controls. ADB, or Android Debug Bridge, is a command-line tool that lets a computer communicate with an Android or Wear OS device. With ADB, you can install or remove test apps, inspect applications, capture logs, run shell commands, and connect Android Studio to a physical watch. Google’s ADB documentation explains the tool and its authorization prompt.
Enabling Developer options does not root the watch or unlock its bootloader. Change only the debugging setting you need; other options can affect how the watch behaves.
Before you begin
- A Wear OS watch with enough battery to complete setup.
- A Windows, macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS computer with Android SDK Platform-Tools (which includes
adb) or Android Studio. Google recommends using the latest Platform-Tools; download the current package from the official Platform-Tools page. You do not need the full IDE just to use command-line ADB. Android Studio is an alternative for app development. - For wireless debugging, a Wi-Fi network that lets the watch and computer communicate directly.
- For USB debugging, a watch and cable, dock, or cradle that support USB data. Many watch chargers provide power only.
Reveal Developer options on your watch
Google Pixel Watch
- Wake and unlock the watch, then open Settings.
- Tap System > About > Versions > Build number.
- Tap Build number seven times. Enter the watch PIN, pattern, or passcode if requested.
- Return to the main Settings screen and open Developer options.
This is the Pixel Watch path in Google’s Developer options documentation. A Wear OS update may move a menu or change its wording.

Samsung Galaxy Watch
- Open Settings > About watch > Software.
- Tap Software version five times.
- Return to Settings and tap Developer options.
Samsung documents this path for Galaxy watches and notes that menus can vary by One UI version. See Samsung’s watch connection guide.
Other Wear OS watches
Open the watch’s About section in Settings and look for Build number, Software version, or a similar version entry. Tap the appropriate item repeatedly, then check the top-level Settings screen for Developer options. The item and tap count depend on the manufacturer; do not assume every Android-based watch runs Wear OS or uses the same menus.
Enable the right debugging settings
- Open Settings > Developer options.
- Turn on ADB debugging and accept any confirmation prompt.
- For Wi-Fi, also turn on Wireless debugging. On some software versions or watches, the label may instead say Debug over Wi-Fi or use older wording such as USB debugging.
Google’s current documentation for Wear OS 6 (API level 36) and later uses the labels ADB debugging and Wireless debugging. Do not confuse them with other developer controls such as Bug report, GPU rendering, or Stay awake. Older guides may describe a different layout.

Connect over Wi-Fi
Wireless debugging is often the most practical option because many watches do not provide a standard USB data port. Google’s Wear OS instructions require ADB version 30.0.0 or later for this workflow. The watch and computer must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and that network must permit device-to-device communication; guest or enterprise Wi-Fi may block it. Google’s wireless debugging guide covers pairing and connection.
Pair the computer with the watch
- On the watch, open Settings > Developer options > Wireless debugging.
- Tap Pair new device. Note the displayed IP address, pairing port, and Wi-Fi pairing code.
- On the computer, open a terminal or command prompt and run
adb pair <watch-ip-address>:<pairing-port>. - Enter the pairing code when prompted. A successful pairing produces a confirmation similar to
Successfully paired to <watch-ip-address>:<pairing-port>.
The pairing port is used only for adb pair; it may differ from the connection port.
Connect and check ADB
- Return to the main Wireless debugging screen on the watch. Note its current IP address and connection port.
- Run
adb connect <watch-ip-address>:<connection-port>on the computer. - Run
adb devices. The watch should appear with a status ofdevice, for example:
List of devices attached
192.168.1.25:41235 device
If more than one device is connected, specify the watch when opening a shell: adb -s <watch-ip-address>:<connection-port> shell. Pairing and connecting are separate: a successful adb pair does not prove an active connection.

Connect over USB when the watch supports it
USB is an alternative for supported watches with a data-capable connection, not a universal Wear OS feature. Google’s Wear OS debugging overview describes USB connections for supported watches. A power-only cable or cradle will not expose the watch to ADB.
- Enable Developer options and turn on ADB debugging or, on older software, USB debugging.
- Connect the unlocked watch using a known data-capable cable, cradle, or dock.
- When the watch displays a debugging authorization prompt, approve it only if you trust the computer.
- Run
adb devices. A status ofdevicemeans the connection is ready.
If the watch is listed as unauthorized, unlock its screen and approve the prompt. If it is absent, check the cable or cradle, operating-system drivers, USB permissions, and whether that watch supports data over the connection. Google’s USB device setup instructions cover Windows drivers and Linux permissions.
Fix common problems
Developer options does not appear
- Check that you tapped the correct entry: Build number on the documented Pixel Watch path or Software version on Samsung Galaxy Watch.
- Complete the required taps without long pauses, then look on the top-level Settings screen rather than only inside About.
- Search Settings for “Developer options” and check for manufacturer-specific wording or a changed path after a software update.
- Confirm that the watch runs Wear OS. Android Wear is the former platform name; proprietary systems, including older Tizen-based Galaxy watches, do not necessarily share Wear OS instructions.
adb is not found
Install Android Studio or the standalone SDK Platform-Tools package. If Platform-Tools is already installed, run the command from its directory or add that directory to your system PATH. The official Platform-Tools page provides the standalone package and current release information.

adb devices lists no watch
- For Wi-Fi, make sure ADB debugging and Wireless debugging are still enabled, both devices are on the same network, and the network does not isolate clients.
- Check that the watch’s current IP address and port are being used. A reboot, network change, or restart of Wireless debugging can require a new connection.
- For USB, confirm the connection carries data, the required driver or Linux permissions are in place, and the watch supports USB data.
Restart ADB on the computer, then check again:
adb kill-server
adb start-server
adb devices
For Wi-Fi, you can also toggle Wireless debugging off and on, then pair or connect again using the currently displayed details.
adb connect fails or pairing works but the watch remains disconnected
Confirm that you used the pairing port from Pair new device with adb pair, and the connection port from the main Wireless debugging screen with adb connect. Also check that the watch and computer remain on the same network, the watch has not rebooted or changed Wi-Fi, and a firewall or client-isolation setting is not blocking traffic. Reconnect whenever Wireless debugging is restarted or the watch changes networks. If the regular network blocks device communication, try a private mobile hotspot.
The watch says unauthorized
Unlock the watch and accept its debugging authorization prompt. If no prompt appears, turn ADB debugging off and on and reconnect. Some software versions may offer a control to reset or revoke debugging authorizations in Developer options, but its availability and label vary.

Why Bluetooth instructions may not work
Google states that debugging over Bluetooth is no longer supported as of Wear OS 3. Bluetooth-debugging steps in older Android Wear guides may apply only to pre-Wear OS 3 devices or legacy workflows, not current watches. See Google’s Wear OS debugging overview.
Turn debugging off when finished
ADB access gives an authorized computer substantial control over the watch. Approve prompts only on computers you trust, avoid public or shared computers and open networks, and turn off ADB debugging and Wireless debugging in Developer options when you no longer need them. Google describes the authorization prompt as a safeguard against ADB commands running without the user unlocking and acknowledging the device: ADB security and authorization.
Use an emulator if you do not need watch hardware
For app development, a Wear OS emulator can avoid physical-device setup and let you test different virtual watch configurations. It cannot reproduce every real-world sensor, battery, connectivity, or hardware behavior, so use a physical watch when those details matter. Google outlines emulator and device debugging options in its Wear OS debugging guide.
