What Monochrome meant by “best” in 2023
Robin Nooy’s year-end article narrowed the year’s new releases to five watches, describing the field as ranging from affordable options to haute horlogerie. The picks reflect one editorial remit; they are not a standardized comparison of price, performance or market popularity. A different staff-picks list published by Hodinkee on 12 December 2023 included watches such as the TAG Heuer Carrera Glassbox, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore 37mm, Rolex Le Mans Daytona and Tudor Black Bay 54, illustrating how much a “best” list depends on its selection criteria.
The five models below appear in Monochrome’s original order. Their specifications and evaluations are attributed to that article, rather than presented as independent testing.
The five watches in the roundup
Chopard Alpine Eagle 41 XPS Salmon
Monochrome connected the Alpine Eagle to Chopard’s St. Moritz, a collection launched in the 1980s. Its 41mm XPS Salmon selection was described as having an 8mm-thin Lucent Steel A223 case, a Monte Rosa Pink dial, white-gold applied indices and hands, and an automatic L.U.C 96.40-L movement with a solid-gold micro-rotor. The article says the movement is finished to Poinçon de Genève requirements. Those are the publication’s descriptions, not claims of independent inspection here.

H. Moser & Cie Streamliner Small Seconds MicroRotor
The roundup called this version a highlight of the year, pointing to smaller, slimmer dimensions than earlier Streamliners, a Grand Feu blue enamel dial and a new micro-rotor movement in a stainless-steel watch. It was not designated a limited edition, although Monochrome noted that production was not large. That distinction matters: “not limited” does not mean that a watch is made in unlimited quantities or readily available now.
IWC Ingenieur Automatic 40
Monochrome presented the 2023 Ingenieur as a modern return inspired by the 1976 Genta-designed Ingenieur. Its design cues include a barrel-shaped case, integrated bracelet and textured dial. The article listed steel models with silvery-white, black or aqua-blue dials, plus a monochromatic titanium version. Its positive view of how the watch wears is the source’s editorial assessment, not a measured fit result that applies to every wrist.

Louis Vuitton Tambour 2023
The Tambour redesign retained the collection’s barrel-shaped case identity in a slimmer form and added an integrated bracelet. Monochrome attributed the new micro-rotor movement to La Fabrique du Temps and Le Cercle des Horlogers. It also highlighted multi-level dials, bold indices and semi-openworked hands.
Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 35mm
The 35mm PRX Powermatic 80 line was Monochrome’s clearest lower-price-tier choice. The article said the smaller version addressed the larger-wearing feel of the 40mm design, which it linked in part to the bracelet’s non-articulating first link. It also noted additional dial choices and called the watch an excellent value proposition. That value judgment is relative: the roundup did not provide a standardized price comparison across the five watches.

How the five fit the wider 2023 watch conversation
The selections reflected a broader sport-chic trend, but they were only one slice of the year. In Christophe Roulet’s Fondation Haute Horlogerie review, “The 2023 watch celebrates the technical spirit of sport,” he wrote: “The horological year 2023 has been placed under the aegis of the sport-chic watch and the chronograph, i.e. precise, robust, reliable, and elegant models.” The review pointed to integrated-bracelet examples including the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, Baume & Mercier Riviera, Chopard Alpine Eagle and IWC Ingenieur, alongside designs such as the Louis Vuitton Tambour, Czapek Antarctique Titanium Dark Sector, Oris ProPilot X Calibre 400, Hublot Big Bang Integrated Time Only and Tonda PF Micro-Rotor. It also noted the prominence of chronographs and increasing use of titanium.
That context helps explain why integrated bracelets and sport-inspired case designs recur in Monochrome’s five, but it does not make the shortlist a complete survey of 2023 launches. Nor does the evidence establish how affordable these watches were for buyers as a group. One reader commented, “How many people can afford a $20k watch .” That is one commenter’s reaction, not a market statistic or a representative affordability measure.

The roundup is best used as a starting point. The models differ in size, materials, dial treatment, movement architecture and price tier, so a useful comparison begins with the intended fit and budget rather than the word “best.”
