Its defining feature is a caseback disc that Zero West says was recast from the recovered aircraft’s Rolls-Royce Merlin engine casing. The official listing marks the edition sold out and closed, so it is not currently offered as a new watch by the manufacturer.
What is the Zero West H1-P3708?
The H1-P3708 is Zero West’s aviation-themed mechanical watch commemorating what the company calls the “Hardest Day” in the Battle of Britain. Its design draws on the Hawker Hurricane Mk I, while its caseback connects the watch to Hurricane P3708 through a disc made, according to the manufacturer, from material recovered from the aircraft’s Merlin engine casing.
That distinction matters: the watch’s central historical-material claim is Zero West’s published provenance account. The product page describes the aircraft recovery and material conversion, but independent archaeological or museum documentation confirming the full account was not established here. The specifications below are likewise manufacturer-published figures, not independent test results.
How does the watch use material from Hurricane P3708?
Zero West says P3708’s remains were recovered from Foulness Island in Essex. According to the company, the aircraft site was identified and excavation began in 1990. Its account lists recovered components including the tail fin, oxygen and compressed-air bottles, steel-tube fuselage frame, radio, throttle levers and instrument panel. The company says the remains were cleaned, straightened and reassembled at the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum.

For the watch, Zero West says it removed non-aluminium inclusions from the engine-casing material, sand-cast the material into bars, then wire-cut discs from those bars for the casebacks. The maker describes the metal as having last been cast as a Merlin engine crankcase nearly 80 years earlier. These recovery, processing and dating details are the manufacturer’s account, rather than independently verified provenance in the available documentation.
The caseback pairs the disc with a sapphire crystal over a reverse-printed graphic. This makes the material claim visible rather than merely symbolic: the watch presents a piece of the claimed recovered material as part of its construction.

Which Hurricane details appear in the design?
- Dial: Zero West says the design takes cues from the Hurricane Mk I slip-turn indicator.
- Crown: The maker describes it as modeled on the fire button on a joystick gun platform.
- Geographic reference: Coordinates on the watch refer to Foulness Island, according to the product page.
- Date reference: The maker links a date code to a dogfight above the Essex coast involving Alexander “Jock” Girdwood on 18 August 1940.
- Caseback: A sapphire crystal covers the reverse-printed graphic and recast metal disc.
Zero West’s product-history account identifies Girdwood as a Sergeant Pilot and says he died on 29 October 1940 while taking off during a raid on North Weald airfield. The account also connects him to the watch’s historical framing. Those specific service and aircraft-history details should be read as the company’s narrative: independent authoritative records for P3708’s complete service and recovery history were not established in the available material.
What are the H1-P3708 specifications?
The following figures are published by Zero West for the H1-P3708. They describe the maker’s stated specification, not measurements or performance verified by independent testing.

| Strap | Custom fluoroelastomer rubber, sized 22/20 mm |
The 44 mm diameter and 14.1 mm thickness are useful fit considerations for a substantial pilot-watch format. The stated 22 mm lug width is not, by itself, proof that every generic 22 mm strap will fit: Zero West specifies a custom 22/20 mm strap, and attachment geometry, strap thickness, end shape and buckle compatibility may differ.
Can you still buy the H1 Hurricane?
Zero West’s official H1-P3708 product listing states “SOLD OUT” and “EDITION CLOSED,” and gives the production run as 100 builds. That means the official listing does not present the watch as available to order new. Current resale listings, prices and marketplace stock have not been confirmed, so no present secondary-market availability can be stated.

Zero West describes historical materials as a feature of selected models and identifies the H1 Hurricane as a past model on its official site. Separately, the Spitfire AA810 restoration project announced Zero West as a restoration partner; that establishes an aviation-restoration connection, not H1-P3708 availability or an affiliate arrangement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What makes the H1-P3708 distinctive?
Its strongest point of difference is the combination of aviation-inspired design and a caseback component that the maker says comes from a recovered Hurricane engine casing. The aircraft cues give the dial and crown a specific rationale, while the technical package is a steel-cased ETA 2824 automatic with conventional published dimensions and water-resistance figures for a mechanical watch of this type. The historical-material story is compelling, but buyers assessing provenance should distinguish Zero West’s account from independently corroborated records.
