How does the Ressence Type 3 display time?
The Type 3 is a self-winding mechanical watch, but it does not show time with conventional hands. Its hours, minutes, day, date, runner and oil-temperature indications are carried on rotating discs that move in relation to the dial. Ressence calls the system ROCS, short for Ressence Orbital Convex System.
On the current Type 3 Black, the module is ROCS 3.6. Ressence says the display is driven by the minute axle of a customized 2824/2 base calibre. The company’s Type 3 overview describes ROCS 3 as a 215-part module, including the main and sub-discs; that is Ressence’s stated count, not an independently audited figure. The result is a dial whose indications continuously change position rather than remaining fixed. Ressence describes it this way: “The result is a dimensional dial entirely in motion and ever changing.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization; the available sources do not provide independent measurements comparing its legibility or visual effect with a conventional dial. Why is the Type 3 filled with oil?
The Type 3 has two separate sealed chambers. The upper chamber, containing the display, is filled with 3.75 ml of oil, according to the Type 3 Black listing. Ressence and retailer descriptions connect the oil-filled upper chamber with the watch’s distinctive visual presentation. This is the maker’s design explanation, not a quantified claim about improved legibility: the sources provide no independent optical measurements or comparison with ordinary watch dials. Is the Ressence Type 3 water resistant?
The official Type 3 Black listing describes the watch as splash-resistant, but does not state a depth rating. That is not enough information to recommend it for swimming, snorkeling or diving. If water use matters, ask Ressence or an authorized retailer for the applicable guidance for the specific watch before exposing it to water.
What does the Type 3 cost, and what affects the buying decision?
The official Type 3 Black product page displayed €50,600 including VAT when checked for this article. This is a listing price, not a guaranteed price or availability in every market; confirm the current figure, local taxes and stock with Ressence or a retailer. The Type 3 overview also lists other variants, including some marked sold out, and a Marc Newson edition at €61,000. As a buying decision, the Type 3 is best considered as a watch chosen for its display concept and mechanical execution rather than as a conventional time-only alternative. The listed strap is leather and measures 22/22 mm. If sourcing a replacement or alternate strap, confirm both widths and compatibility with the watch’s attachment and buckle; the listed dimensions alone do not establish that every strap of that size will fit. Who is the Ressence Type 3 for?
- It may suit you if you value a display that makes time visually dynamic and want a self-winding mechanical watch built around that idea.
- Look more closely before buying if fit is uncertain, you need a watch for regular water exposure, or your decision depends on specific service costs or intervals that are not published on the listing.
- Compare carefully if you are weighing it against a conventional luxury watch: check local pricing, try the 44 mm by 15 mm case on, and compare documented water resistance and service arrangements rather than relying on unsupported rankings.
