The Ressence Type 3 MN is an 80-piece collaboration that combines Marc Newson’s restrained elliptical design with Ressence’s oil-filled ROCS display. Its discs appear to float beneath a domed crystal, while a 1 ATM rating limits it to splash resistance. Launch materials announced a CHF 46,000 price excluding taxes in December 2025; that is a historical launch price, not a statement of current availability or cost.
What makes the Type 3 MN different?
Rather than using conventional hands over a fixed dial, the Type 3 MN displays time with rotating discs beneath a domed sapphire crystal. The design is the meeting of Ressence founder Benoît Mintiens’s ROCS time-display system and Marc Newson’s clean, elliptical industrial-design language.
The grey, black, celadon-green and bright-yellow palette has precedents in Newson’s earlier Ikepod designs. Wallpaper* connects the grey and yellow to the 1998 Hemipode and the green lume to an original Megapode; these are design references, not evidence that the watches share construction. Wallpaper*’s interview with Mintiens also attributes to him the line, “The simpler you make something, the more functional it becomes.”
How does the oil-filled display work?
The upper display chamber contains 4.15 ml of silicone oil and Ressence’s patented ROCS 3.6 module. Magnetic transmission couples the rotating display to the automatic base movement in a separate chamber. The oil compensates for light refraction, which Ressence says makes the markings appear closer to the crystal and improves legibility from different viewing angles. Claims of exceptional readability are the manufacturer’s rationale, not the result of an independent test.

The movement specification lists self-winding operation, 28,800 vibrations per hour, 47 jewels, 44 gears, four ball bearings, a compensating bellows system and a 36-hour power reserve. Fratello identifies the base as a customized ETA 2824-2; Europa Star describes it as a customized automatic base calibre. The complete watch should not be mistaken for an unmodified ETA movement.

Dimensions and technical specifications are published by Europa Star and Fratello. The 45 mm width and integrated strap may wear differently from a conventional round watch; try it on if possible, since no independent fit or comfort assessment is available.

How do you wind and set it?
There is no conventional side crown. Winding and setting take place at the caseback, an interaction Ressence treats as part of the watch’s design. Red Dot’s project description discusses the caseback adjustment alongside the elliptical silhouette and oil-filled display as elements of that concept; this is award-page commentary, not laboratory evidence.
Is the Type 3 MN water resistant?
It is rated to 1 ATM, which the launch specification characterizes as splash resistance. It is not presented as a swimming or diving watch, so do not treat the rating as permission for immersion.

Price, edition and availability
Europa Star announced that sales would begin December 4, 2025 through Ressence’s e-shop and selected retailers worldwide. The announced price was CHF 46,000 excluding taxes, and production was limited to 80 pieces. These are launch terms, not verified current stock or pricing; current inventory, regional taxes and resale prices are not established by the cited announcements. DKSH’s Japan release separately said local release was planned for December 2025, which applies to that market rather than confirming availability elsewhere.
Europa Star’s launch announcement, Fratello’s specification coverage and DKSH Japan’s release document those dated terms. The edition size alone does not establish demand or sell-through.
