The Richard Mille RM 011 Felipe Massa Black Night is a limited-edition Carbon NTPT version of the RM 011 automatic flyback chronograph—not a description of every RM 011. Its appeal is the combination of a technically complicated chronograph, a distinctive tonneau case and a dark composite exterior. The available record supports a useful assessment of its design, functions and one documented auction example, but not claims about hands-on performance or today’s market price.
Where the Black Night fits in the RM 011 family
Richard Mille dates the RM 011’s release to 2007 and says it was developed with racing driver Felipe Massa. The wider family appeared in several materials and limited editions; the Black Night is one later variant. The brand’s historical RM 011 page describes the model’s origins and family-level design and functions.
Phillips cataloged a specific Black Night as a 2015 watch, reference RM011-FM, numbered 38/100. That lot is the basis for the variant-specific case details below. It should not be confused with the RM 011 10th Anniversary, a separate 100-piece edition that Richard Mille described in its 2018 magazine.
Movement and chronograph functions
The RM 011’s RMAC1 is a skeletonized automatic movement with a variable-geometry rotor. Richard Mille lists hours, minutes and seconds, along with a flyback chronograph, a 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour totaliser, an oversized date and a month indicator. The brand also characterizes the calendar as annual.

Flyback allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted in one action while it is running, rather than requiring separate stop, reset and restart operations. The countdown timer adds a timing function distinct from simply measuring elapsed time. These features make the RM 011 more mechanically and visually involved than a straightforward three-hand watch.
Skeletonization exposes the movement rather than presenting a solid dial, so the display’s visual complexity is part of the experience. The listed functions are extensive, but the available sources do not establish independent legibility testing or measured accuracy for the Black Night.

Black Night case, material and documented dimensions
Phillips described its 2015 example as having a Carbon NTPT case, reference RM011-FM, and dimensions of 50 × 40 mm. The catalog also lists an automatic RMAC1 movement with 68 jewels and a nylon strap. These are details recorded for that auctioned watch; they should not be generalized to every RM 011 or assumed verified for another Black Night without checking its own documentation.
The brand describes the RM 011 family’s tonneau case as having a curved bezel, sides and caseback, with the titanium movement mounted to the case using silent-blocks. Those are family-level design details, not independent testing of the Carbon NTPT material or a guarantee about an individual watch’s condition.

A 50 × 40 mm case is a substantial presence on paper. Case shape, wrist size, strap fit and personal preference all affect how it wears, so dimensions alone cannot establish comfort. The exact Black Night example’s supplied nylon strap is a catalog fact, not proof that another example retains its original strap or fits the same way.
What the auction record says about price
In 2022, Phillips estimated its lot 82 in The New York Watch Auction: SIX at $200,000–400,000 and reported a result of $352,800. This was the recorded outcome for one 2015 Black Night example, numbered 38/100—not a current quote, an average resale value or evidence that the watch has appreciated. The Phillips lot catalog is the source for the estimate and result.

A single auction result cannot establish what another example should cost. Condition, provenance, completeness, sale date and the circumstances of a particular transaction all matter when comparing watches.

Assess the actual watch and its documentation rather than assuming that a cataloged example represents every Black Night. For the Phillips lot, the catalog records accompanying documentation and accessories, including an additional Richard Mille red rubber strap and a titanium double deployant clasp. That is evidence about that lot’s package only; confirm the contents and fit of any accessories against the exact reference being considered.
