Cable suspension
The manufacturer says two braided steel cables, each 0.27 mm in diameter, suspend the central movement plate. They run through ten pulleys and connect to four tensioners. Laminated sapphire crystal
The crystal comprises two sapphire sheets separated by a polyvinyl film. Richard Mille says that a mallet impact may crack the crystal without causing it to shatter, and calls the construction a watchmaking first and a patented Richard Mille exclusive. These novelty and performance statements are the brand’s claims. The page characterizes the glass as “capable of absorbing extreme shocks without breakage”; that wording should not be taken as a published, quantified shock rating for the complete watch. Why was it designed for polo?
Richard Mille connects the watch to Mac Donough’s experience on the polo field and says the design followed fieldwork and thousands of hours of research and development. The design intent was to address the impacts and rough handling of play while keeping the tourbillon visible.
