The Rolex Perpetual 1908 reference 52506 is a 39 mm platinum dress watch distinguished by an ice-blue guilloché rice-grain dial, a small-seconds display and a leather strap. It pairs a traditional formal-watch layout with Rolex’s automatic calibre 7140, a stated power reserve of approximately 66 hours and 50-metre water resistance. Its appeal is the tension between a slim, classic silhouette and a dial and precious-metal case that are anything but anonymous.
What the Rolex 1908 52506 is
Reference 52506 is the platinum version of the Perpetual 1908, Rolex’s dress-oriented collection introduced in 2023. Hodinkee described the 1908 as the dressed-up replacement for the Cellini. The 52506 has a polished 39 mm platinum case, domed-and-fluted bezel, transparent domed caseback with anti-reflective coating, and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. Hodinkee reported a thickness of 9.5 mm in its April 9, 2024 coverage.
The dial is the defining visual feature. Rolex describes it as ice blue with a guilloché rice-grain motif: a three-dimensional repeating pattern that starts at the small-seconds counter and extends across the dial. A crimped guilloché filet sauté frames the minute track. Rolex explains guillochage as sculpting a pattern into a surface with a turning tool, a technique that gives the broad dial more texture than a plain, conventional dress-watch face.
The watch comes on a matt black alligator-leather strap with a platinum Dualclasp. The combination keeps the overall format formal, while the pale, patterned dial and reflective platinum make it more visually assertive than the restrained silhouette alone might suggest. Rolex says its exclusive ice-blue dial colour is used on the Day-Date, Cosmograph Daytona, Perpetual 1908 and Land-Dweller.

Is the 1908 a true dress watch?
By the usual design cues, yes: it has a precious-metal case, leather strap, compact formal layout and small seconds rather than a chronograph or rotating bezel. The domed-and-fluted bezel adds detail without turning the watch into a sports-watch design. At 39 mm and a reported 9.5 mm thick, it also has relatively measured proportions for a contemporary luxury watch, though wrist fit is personal and depends on case shape and wrist size.
It is not an exercise in strict understatement. Platinum is dense and visually bright, and the rice-grain dial occupies nearly the entire face with a pronounced repeating texture. The result is best understood as a dress watch with presence: traditional in outline, but deliberately expressive up close. It suits someone who wants formal styling without choosing a blank dial or an especially discreet precious-metal watch.

How calibre 7140 performs on paper
Rolex specifies calibre 7140 as an automatic mechanical movement with bidirectional winding, a Syloxi silicon hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. It includes stop-seconds, allowing the seconds hand to halt when setting the time, and displays small seconds at six o’clock. The transparent caseback makes the movement visible; Hodinkee’s 2024 report noted a gold rotor.

Those specifications make the 1908 more practically capable than a dress-watch stereotype might imply. Its water-resistance rating and shock-protection components are useful everyday provisions, but they do not make it a purpose-built sports or dive watch. The stated accuracy is Rolex’s post-casing specification; it should not be read as a guarantee that every watch will keep identical time in every wearing condition.

How it compares with a Calatrava or Patrimony
A meaningful head-to-head requires choosing particular Patek Philippe Calatrava and Vacheron Constantin Patrimony references: those names cover multiple watches, and their dimensions, movements, materials and prices vary. The available published figures here do not establish a model-by-model comparison, so a claim that the 52506 is thinner, more accurate, better finished or better value than either line would be unsupported.
Instead, use the 52506’s documented traits to frame a shortlist. Its clearest point of distinction is the combination of platinum, a highly textured ice-blue dial and Rolex’s specified automatic movement. When comparing it with a particular Calatrava, Patrimony or another dress watch, check the exact reference for case diameter and thickness, dial construction and legibility, reserve and accuracy standard, water resistance, strap and clasp, and local service arrangements. Then decide whether you prefer the 1908’s conspicuous dial texture or a quieter, more traditional presentation.

Price, availability and ownership
Hodinkee reported a launch MSRP of CHF 29,600 in 2024. That is a historical launch price, not a confirmed current retail price or a secondary-market valuation. Rolex directs prospective buyers and owners to official retailers for sales and maintenance; availability and service arrangements should be checked in the buyer’s region.
Rolex identifies the case material as 950 platinum, an alloy containing 950 parts per thousand platinum. Platinum’s density gives the watch substantial wrist presence, and the material is difficult to machine and polish. The leather strap and platinum clasp are also central to the watch’s formal character, so they matter as much to the wearing experience as the case and movement. For travel, a padded leather watch case sized for a 39 mm watch is a practical way to protect the watch from contact with other objects.
