The current Rolex Air-King 126900 keeps the earlier 116900’s 40 mm Oystersteel case size and aviation-inspired black dial, but updates the movement, power reserve, and case details. The 116900 uses calibre 3131 with an approximately 48-hour reserve; the 126900 uses calibre 3230 with an approximately 70-hour reserve. Which is the better choice depends on the individual watch’s condition, service history, provenance, fit, and which generation’s design you prefer.
What changed between the Air-King 116900 and 126900?
Rolex introduced the 126900 update in 2022. The main technical change was the move from calibre 3131 to calibre 3230, accompanied by a longer stated power reserve. Rolex also describes the newer case as having a crown guard and straight sides. Both references remain 40 mm Oystersteel watches, and the 126900 retains the black dial, large 3, 6, and 9 numerals, and prominent minutes scale.

What stays the same?
Both watches use a 40 mm Oystersteel case, sapphire crystal, and a stated 100 m water resistance. The familiar aviation-influenced dial remains central to the model: a black background, large 3, 6, and 9 numerals, and a conspicuous minutes scale. Rolex says that scale supports navigational time readings.

Rolex dates the Air-King’s formal entry into its watch family to 1958 and presents the model as a tribute to aviation’s golden age. It describes the 2016 generation as entirely redesigned; the 2022 update brought the movement and visible case changes while retaining the design cues that make the Air-King recognizable. See Rolex’s Air-King history, its Air-King model overview, and its Oyster heritage account.

116900: calibre 3131
Rolex’s brochure gives the 116900 an approximately 48-hour power reserve and notes magnetic shielding. If the watch is off the wrist for longer than its reserve, it will stop and need to be reset before wearing.

126900: calibre 3230
Rolex lists an approximately 70-hour power reserve for the 126900, about 22 hours more than the 116900’s stated reserve. That extra time may be convenient if you rotate watches over a weekend, although the practical benefit depends on when you last wore or wound the watch.
For the 126900, Rolex states precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing and describes the watch as a Superlative Chronometer. Rolex explains that the tolerance applies to the finished watch and is tighter than the COSC tolerance for the movement alone. This is Rolex’s stated standard, not an independent test of any specific watch.

Which Air-King should you choose?
Choose based on the individual watch, not the reference alone
A reference number does not establish the condition, authenticity, service history, or provenance of a particular example. Compare the actual watch and its documentation; the available specifications cannot determine whether an individual 116900 or 126900 is the better purchase.
- Compare condition: Inspect the case, dial, bracelet, clasp, and operation, ideally with help from a qualified watch professional.
- Review service and provenance: Ask for available service records and documentation, and assess the seller and the watch’s history.
- Try the fit: Both cases are 40 mm, but that measurement alone does not settle how either watch feels on your wrist.
- Decide on the design: Compare the 126900’s crown guard and straight case sides with the earlier generation in person or through clear, reference-specific images.
- Compare actual prices: Evaluate the asking price for the specific watch against its condition and documentation. The US retail price shown for the 126900 is not evidence of the 116900’s historical list price or either watch’s resale value.
Buying and authentication
Rolex states that only official Rolex retailers may sell and maintain its watches. For guidance on authorized sales and service, use the Rolex watch care and service page. A listing on a general marketplace is not, by itself, evidence that the seller is authorized or that a watch is authentic.
