The Rolex Day-Date 40 pairs a full weekday display with the date and uses Rolex calibre 3255. The 2026 Jubilee Gold edition adds an 18 ct Rolex alloy, a green aventurine dial and the signature President bracelet. Here’s how the enduring watch platform differs from that new configuration—and what Rolex’s specifications and independent hands-on reviews actually establish.
What is the Rolex Day-Date 40?
The Day-Date is Rolex’s precious-metal dress-watch line, distinguished by two calendar displays: the date at 3 o’clock and the weekday spelled out in a window at 12 o’clock. Rolex says the model debuted in 1956 and was the first calendar wristwatch to display the day of the week in full alongside the date. The day display is offered in multiple languages; Rolex specified 26 choices in a 2024 newsroom article, but that does not establish that every language is available with every current configuration.
The current family includes the Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40, in differing metals and dial configurations. The 40 in the model name refers to its case size; it is not a description of the movement or bracelet.
What movement is in the Day-Date 40?
The Day-Date 40 is powered by calibre 3255, a self-winding mechanical movement that Rolex says it developed and manufactures in-house. Rolex released the calibre in 2015 for the Day-Date 40 and introduced it in the Day-Date 36 in 2019. The same calibre appears in the 2026 Jubilee Gold reference 228235JG.

Accuracy and power reserve
Rolex’s technical brochure for the yellow-gold Day-Date 40 reference 228238 lists approximately 70 hours of power reserve and a precision rating of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. Those are Rolex’s published specifications for that named reference, not an independent test result or a measurement of every Day-Date 40 variant. The Jubilee Gold brochure identifies calibre 3255, but the figures from the 228238 brochure should not be transferred to another configuration without checking its own technical material.
That 228238 brochure also lists instantaneous day and date displays and stop-seconds. These are reference-specific published details, rather than evidence of a comparative accuracy test.

What makes the 2026 Jubilee Gold Day-Date 40 different?
Rolex’s 2026 announcement presents the Day-Date 40 in Jubilee Gold, a new 18 ct alloy the company says it conceived, developed and produces in its workshops. The highlighted configuration combines that alloy with a bright green aventurine dial and a President bracelet. Rolex’s brochure identifies the model as reference 228235JG and confirms that it uses calibre 3255.

Jubilee Gold is the material distinction, while the full weekday-and-date display, 40 mm format and calibre 3255 connect this edition to the broader Day-Date 40 platform. The watch is not a new movement model simply because its alloy and dial are new.
What independent hands-on coverage says
Andy Hoffman’s Hodinkee hands-on article, published April 16, 2026, describes the Jubilee Gold alloy as appearing warmer or cooler under different lighting. That is a reviewer’s visual observation, not a measured color specification. Monochrome Watches published its own hands-on account on April 21, 2026, identifying reference 228235JG and discussing its design details. These accounts offer wrist-level impressions of this particular configuration; they are not independent laboratory evaluations of movement performance.

How the President bracelet fits the watch
Rolex says it created the President bracelet specifically for the Day-Date at the model’s 1956 launch. The 228238 brochure describes the bracelet’s semi-circular three-piece links and concealed folding Crownclasp. Rolex also says ceramic inserts inside the links are intended to help reduce premature wear and improve flexibility. Those are design and construction descriptions from Rolex, not a quantified durability comparison.

When comparing a Jubilee Gold model with other Day-Date 40 versions, start with the exact reference and separate the platform’s shared identity from configuration-specific details.
