A “Paul Newman Daytona” is a vintage Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with a particular exotic dial configuration—not an official model name established by the auction-house accounts cited here. The nickname connects that dial to actor Paul Newman, whose personal reference 6239 became a landmark of watch collecting and sold for US$17,752,500 in October 2017.
What is a Paul Newman Daytona?
The name usually refers to a vintage Cosmograph Daytona fitted with an exotic dial: a visually distinctive configuration of contrasting subsidiary registers, graphic numerals and markers. In Phillips’ description of a reference 6239 example, the dial has a tri-color presentation. Details vary between watches, so the nickname does not identify one single combination of colors, case metal or reference.

Phillips says Rolex originally called the configuration “exotic.” “Paul Newman” is the later collector nickname used for the dial style because of its association with the actor. It should not be mistaken for a formal Rolex model designation.

Sotheby’s recounts that Italian watch dealers and collectors coined “Paul Newman” in the late 1980s, after Newman had been photographed wearing his own Daytona. In that account, the name grew from the sight of a famous actor wearing a watch with the distinctive dial—not from an official naming announcement by Rolex.

That history helps explain why the term carries two meanings: it describes a dial configuration, and it evokes a particular celebrity and his personal watch. Those meanings overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A watch with an exotic dial is not Newman’s own watch, and the nickname alone does not establish a connection to him.
What makes the exotic dial different?
The appeal is largely graphic. Contrasting subsidiary registers stand apart from the main dial, while stylized numerals and markers give the layout a more emphatic, instrument-like look than a conventional Daytona dial. Phillips describes a tri-color arrangement in its reference 6239 example; that description belongs to that documented watch, not every dial called “Paul Newman.”
Rank #2
Phillips says the exotic configuration was initially poorly received and estimates that it was produced for roughly four to five years. That duration is the auction house’s estimate in its lot description, rather than a comprehensive production record. Its account suggests that a design once viewed as unusual later became one of the Daytona’s most recognizable collector variations.
Why is the Rolex Daytona Paul Newman so famous?
The watch’s reputation comes from the combination of a distinctive design, a celebrity association and the story of Newman’s own reference 6239. Phillips identifies reference 6239, introduced in 1963, as the first Cosmograph Daytona. Newman’s watch made the nickname especially resonant: it was not just a dial style associated with him, but a watch he personally owned and wore.

Provenance—the documented history of a particular watch—can add significance that the dial alone cannot. Phillips identifies Newman’s personal watch as reference 6239, serial number 2,005,325. That specific ownership history distinguishes it from other watches with similar dials; it does not make every example equivalent in history or value.
How much did Paul Newman’s Daytona sell for?
Phillips reports that Newman’s personal reference 6239 sold at its New York auction in October 2017 for US$17,752,500. Phillips also reported the result as CHF 17,709,894. The auction house described the sale as a world record at the time; that dated claim should not be read as confirmation of the current auction record.
Rank #4
The result belongs to Newman’s own watch, with its particular provenance and auction context. It is not a normal valuation or price guide for other reference 6239 watches, even those with an exotic dial.

“Paul Newman Daytona” covers watches that can differ in important ways. Phillips and Sotheby’s auction descriptions illustrate why collectors consider the individual watch and its documented history rather than treating the nickname as a complete specification.

| Comparison point | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Reference | Identify the watch’s reference rather than assuming every exotic-dial Daytona is a reference 6239. Phillips identifies the 6239 as the first Cosmograph Daytona, introduced in 1963. |
| Dial | Compare the actual dial configuration, including register contrast, numerals, markers and colors. A documented example’s tri-color appearance should not be generalized to all examples. |
| Case metal | Establish the case metal for the specific watch. Sotheby’s 2026 listing documents a yellow-gold 6239 example, showing that examples need not share the same metal. |
| Condition and preservation | Assess the condition of the specific watch, including how well its components and finish have been preserved. Sotheby’s discusses preservation in its lot account; an auction description is specialist cataloguing, not a universal grading standard. |
| Originality | Seek qualified inspection of the watch and its components. Appearance or the nickname alone does not establish originality or authenticity. |
| Provenance | Look for documentation that supports the watch’s ownership and history. A documented personal connection, such as Newman’s, is specific to that watch. |
These are comparison points, not a complete authentication or appraisal procedure. The cited auction descriptions do not establish a universal protocol, and no single visual feature can prove authenticity.
What the name does—and does not—tell you
The nickname is useful shorthand for a celebrated exotic-dial style, but it does not by itself establish a watch’s reference, precise configuration, condition, originality, provenance or value. Phillips’ account of the 6239’s history and Sotheby’s auction descriptions provide examples of how those details can differ. For any particular watch, the evidence belongs to that watch—not to the fame of the nickname.
