Its independently adjustable local hour hand makes that display practical when changing time zones, while the watch’s 48-hour stated power reserve and two dial choices—white or black—define its key specifications. Whether it is worth buying depends less on a single market estimate than on the individual watch’s condition, history and price.
What the Explorer II 216570 is
Rolex’s reference-specific brochure describes the 216570 as an Oystersteel watch with a 42 mm Oyster case. The case has a monobloc middle, a screw-down case back and a Twinlock screw-down crown. Its 24-hour graduated bezel is fixed, not a rotating diver’s bezel. Rolex specifies water resistance of 100 metres (330 feet), a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal and a Cyclops lens over the date. Rolex 216570 brochure
The Oyster bracelet uses flat three-piece Oystersteel links and an Oysterlock safety clasp. An Easylink extension provides 5 mm of adjustment. Rolex also describes the dial’s Chromalight display as offering long-lasting blue luminescence. These are manufacturer specifications, not findings from an independent wear or durability test.
How the 24-hour hand and second time zone work
The orange arrow-shaped hand makes one circuit of the dial every 24 hours and reads against the fixed bezel. It can indicate a second time zone while the conventional hour hand shows local time. The local hour hand adjusts independently, so it can be moved to a new time without shifting the 24-hour reference hand. Rolex lists this independent rapid-setting function as part of calibre 3187. Rolex also describes the 24-hour display as useful for distinguishing day from night where daylight cues are unreliable, including caves and polar regions during summer. That is the design rationale; it need not be a practical requirement for every owner. Rolex Explorer II collection page
Calibre 3187 and stated performance
The 216570 is powered by Rolex’s self-winding calibre 3187. The reference brochure lists centre hour, minute and seconds hands, a 24-hour display, a second-time-zone function, instantaneous date and stop-seconds. It specifies bidirectional winding, a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and approximately 48 hours of power reserve. Rolex’s stated precision is −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. White “Polar” or black dial?
The 216570 was offered with white and black dials. Rolex’s reference-specific brochure covers the white-dial version, while its 2021 Explorer II brochure shows both white and black lacquer options. Rolex 216570 brochure Rolex 2021 Explorer II brochure
“Polar” is a common nickname for the white-dial variant, not a separate reference in the cited Rolex specifications. The choice is chiefly visual: neither dial changes the core case size or movement specification. Bob’s Watches reports minor differences in the orange 24-hour hand between dial variants; that is a secondary-source observation, not a Rolex specification. Bob’s Watches review
216570 vs. the current Explorer II 226570

These listed differences establish the movement and reserve comparison; they do not by themselves establish how either watch will feel on the wrist or perform in a particular owner’s use. Bob’s Watches reports the 216570 was produced from 2011 to 2021. Rolex’s current page features the 226570, but the cited Rolex material is not a direct discontinuation notice. Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the 216570 worth buying?
It may suit a buyer who wants a 42 mm Explorer II with a dedicated second-time-zone hand, independent local-hour adjustment and a choice of white or black dial. The main trade-off against the current 226570 in Rolex’s published specifications is the older calibre 3187’s approximately 48-hour reserve versus the 3285’s approximately 70 hours. Value cannot be determined from a reference number alone: condition, service history, provenance, included accessories, location and seller terms all matter.
For dated context, WatchCharts estimated the white-dial 216570-0001 at $9,346 and the black-dial 216570-0002 at $8,643 in September 2026. It listed $8,350 as the authorized-dealer retail price as of September 2021. These are WatchCharts estimates and historical retail data, respectively—not offers, verified current asking prices or completed-sale values. The figures do not establish what any specific watch should cost. WatchCharts 216570 overview

What to check before buying a pre-owned example
Rolex’s published specifications describe the model, not the authenticity or condition of a particular listing. Assess the actual watch and the seller rather than treating accessories or paperwork as proof.
- Match the listing to the watch. Confirm that the reference and dial variant correspond to what is being advertised: 216570-0001 is the white-dial variant and 216570-0002 the black-dial variant in WatchCharts’ listings. Ask for clear, current photographs of the watch and its identifying details.
- Assess condition. Examine the case, bezel, crystal, dial, hands, bracelet and clasp for damage, wear or signs of replacement. Ask the seller to explain any visible inconsistencies and whether components or refinishing work are documented.
- Review service and provenance records. Request available service documentation and a clear account of ownership and sale. A box, papers or other accessory may be useful context, but none alone establishes authenticity.
- Arrange qualified assessment where appropriate. If authenticity or mechanical condition is uncertain, make purchase conditional on an evaluation by a qualified watch professional or service provider, with terms agreed with the seller in advance.
- Check the transaction terms. Understand the return window, payment protections, shipping and any condition guarantees before committing. Compare the specific watch’s condition and documentation—not just its dial color—with other offers.
Rolex states: “Only official Rolex jewelers are allowed to sell and maintain a Rolex watch.” Rolex Explorer II collection page That is the manufacturer’s statement about its authorized network; it does not authenticate an independent seller’s particular listing.
