The Rolex Explorer II was introduced in 1971 to help explorers distinguish day from night when ordinary cues disappeared. Its defining combination—a separate 24-hour hand and a fixed, graduated 24-hour bezel—has endured through later updates. The 2011 model marked four decades of the watch with a 42 mm case and returning orange hand; the current-generation 226570, introduced in 2021, pairs a redesigned case and bracelet with calibre 3285.
What is the Rolex Explorer II for?
Rolex introduced the Explorer II in 1971 for people including polar explorers and speleologists, who might spend long periods in places where daylight does not reliably indicate the time of day. In a cave or during a polar season of continuous daylight or darkness, the watch’s additional 24-hour hand provides a way to tell whether the indicated time is in the day or night portion of the cycle. Rolex describes this as the model’s original purpose: helping distinguish daytime from nighttime when normal cues are absent. Rolex’s Explorer II history
That purpose gives the Explorer II its practical identity. “Understatement” is an interpretation of its functional, relatively restrained design—not an official Rolex description or a measurable feature. The watch’s purpose is more specific than a general-purpose sports-watch label suggests: its extra hand and fixed 24-hour scale make a full-day reading explicit.
How does the Explorer II 24-hour hand work?
The orange hand makes one circuit in 24 hours, rather than completing a turn every 12 hours like the regular hour hand. Read it against the bezel’s fixed 24-hour graduations: it indicates the hour in a full-day cycle, helping the wearer distinguish, for example, 6 a.m. from 6 p.m. The bezel does not rotate, so it is not used to shift the displayed time by turning it.

Rolex also describes the additional hand as usable for reading a second time zone. In that use, the hand points to a 24-hour time on the bezel while the conventional hour hand shows local time. It is a straightforward second-time-zone display, not a claim that the Explorer II bezel rotates or that the watch provides every adjustment feature found on other GMT watches. How the Explorer II evolved
1971: reference 1655 establishes the idea
Rolex’s historical timeline records the Explorer II’s debut in 1971 as reference 1655. The model introduced the additional 24-hour hand to address the problem of losing normal day-and-night cues. The lasting design idea was not simply an extra hand; it was the pairing of that hand with a fixed 24-hour bezel so the wearer could read the time across a complete day. Rolex history: the 1970s
2011: the 40th-anniversary modernization
Four decades after the launch, Rolex significantly modernized the Explorer II. The case grew to 42 mm, the orange 24-hour hand returned, and the watch received calibre 3187, incorporating a Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers according to Rolex. This is the milestone behind the “40-year evolution” framing: it marks an anniversary-era update, not the end of the model’s development. Rolex Explorer II history
2021: redesigned case and bracelet, calibre 3285
For the 50th anniversary, Rolex redesigned the case and bracelet and introduced calibre 3285 in the new generation. The currently listed reference is 226570. The core 24-hour display remained, while the movement’s stated power reserve rose from approximately 48 hours in the preceding 216570 brochure to approximately 70 hours for the current 3285. Those manufacturer figures describe stated reserves, not a guarantee of the real-world performance of every individual watch. There is no evidence here for a condition-adjusted market-value verdict, so a generation choice is better made around design and documented specifications:
- Choose the 1655 if the appeal is the original 1971 profile and the model’s early expression of the 24-hour tool-watch idea. Specific vintage variations and production dates require reference-specific documentation beyond the milestones covered here.
- Choose the 216570 if the 2011 42 mm modernization and returning orange hand are the desired balance, with calibre 3187 and Rolex’s stated approximately 48-hour power reserve.
- Choose the 226570 if the priority is the current redesign, calibre 3285, and Rolex’s stated approximately 70-hour reserve.

A historical test anecdote, with its limits
Rolex’s real-world laboratory page reproduces a 1972 statement by volcanologist Haroun Tazieff, who said the watch passed a demanding test in aggressive gases on Mount Etna and worked when his teammates’ watches did not. This is an anecdote attributed to Tazieff and published by Rolex; it is not an independent performance test or a substitute for current specifications. Rolex real-life laboratory
