The Rolex GMT-Master reference 16753 is a vintage steel-and-yellow-gold GMT-Master, best known by collectors as the “Root Beer.” It uses caliber 3075, has a quick-set date, and retains the original GMT-Master linked-hand arrangement. “Clint Eastwood” is a collector nickname tied to the actor’s association with the watch—not proof that any particular 16753 was his, is authentic, or appeared on screen.
What is the Rolex GMT-Master 16753?
The 16753 is the two-tone Rolesor counterpart to the all-steel GMT-Master 16750. Specialist reference writing generally places it in the 1980s, but sources differ on its first year. A reference number alone cannot date an individual watch precisely; check its serial, documentation, and physical condition.
Rolex dates the GMT-Master’s introduction to 1955, when it was designed as a navigation aid for people crossing time zones. The brand says it “became the official watch of several airlines, among them the famous Pan American World Airways, better known as Pan Am.” Rolex’s history of 1953–1967 provides that context for the model family.
The 16753 is not a GMT-Master II. That distinction matters because the two models use different GMT-hand arrangements.

How do the GMT hand and date work?
Linked GMT hand
The 16753 uses the traditional GMT-Master “caller” arrangement: its 24-hour hand moves in step with local time rather than being independently adjustable. Use the 24-hour bezel with that hand to read a second time zone. This differs from the GMT-Master II 16760, whose movement lets the wearer adjust the local-hour hand independently. Hodinkee’s reference history discusses the distinction.
Quick-set date
Powered by automatic caliber 3075, the 16753 has a quick-set date, a feature specialist sources identify as a first for a two-tone GMT-Master. That convenience changes how the date can be set; it does not make the model a GMT-Master II. For a specific watch, have a qualified watchmaker confirm that the date mechanism and other functions operate correctly.

Which dials and bezels are associated with the 16753?
Specialist reference material documents both brown sunburst and glossy black dial branches, including examples with raised “nipple”-style hour markers. A Sotheby’s catalogue entry records one circa-1980 steel-and-yellow-gold 16753 with a tropical nipple dial. Its listed specifications—40 mm case diameter and automatic caliber 3075 with 27 jewels—describe that individual catalogue watch, not every 16753.
Brown, orange, or otherwise changed color is not by itself evidence of a factory dial or desirable patina. Aging and oxidation can be uneven, and condition affects the appearance and appeal of an individual example. A photograph or bezel color alone cannot establish the watch’s reference or the originality of its parts. Rolexopedia’s 16753 reference guide, the Sotheby’s catalogue entry, and 41Watch’s condition review document these variations and condition considerations.

Why is it called the “Root Beer” or “Clint Eastwood”?
“Root Beer,” “Tiger Eye,” and “Tigerauge” are collector terms associated with brown-toned versions of the watch. The “Clint Eastwood” name is another collector nickname, reflecting the actor’s association with the model. Hodinkee says Eastwood wore a Root Beer as a personal watch and in films; Rolexopedia lists Firefox (1982), Tightrope (1984), and In the Line of Fire (1993) in connection with the reference.
Those associations do not establish that a particular watch belonged to Eastwood or was used in a film. The nickname is not an authentication claim or provenance document; assess an individual watch on its own evidence.

What should you verify before buying a 16753?
Evaluate the specific watch rather than relying on its nickname, dial color, or seller description. Ask for clear documentation and photographs, and arrange an inspection by a qualified vintage-watch specialist when possible.
- Reference and serial: Confirm that the identifying marks and available records are consistent with the claimed reference and proposed date.
- Dial and bezel: Assess whether the components are original to the watch and whether their condition and appearance are accurately described. Color alone does not prove originality.
- Dial condition: Look for oxidation, uneven deterioration, and other changes that affect condition. Distinguish documented features from assumptions based on the word “tropical.”
- Case: Examine wear and polishing, which can affect the case’s condition and definition.
- Movement and service: Request service documentation and have the movement and functions checked; the reference’s specification is not a condition report for a particular watch.
- Bracelet and completeness: Check the bracelet, end links, clasp, and any accompanying papers, and establish what is actually included in the sale.
A single Sotheby’s catalogue example documents specifications for one watch, not a current market-price range. No representative current value follows from that lot alone; compare current, like-for-like examples and account for condition, originality, and completeness.
