What is the Rolex GMT-Master II 16710?
The 16710 is a stainless-steel GMT-Master II catalogued as a 1989–2007 production reference. It followed the 16760, retaining the GMT-Master II’s second-time-zone function in a slimmer case profile. Sotheby’s likewise describes the reference as introduced in 1989 and produced until 2007. GMT Master History and Sotheby’s 2025 catalogue document the reference and its history.
How does its GMT function work?
The 16710 uses a 24-hour hand together with a rotating 24-hour bezel to display a second time zone. Its GMT hand can be adjusted independently, a useful distinction when setting local time without losing track of the other zone. Sotheby’s describes this function in its catalogue entry for a specific 16710 example.
How to tell the Pepsi, Coke and black versions apart
The bezel insert is the most immediately visible difference among the recognized configurations. The names refer to color, not to a separate reference or a guaranteed difference in condition or value.

GMT Master History and Phillips catalogue descriptions identify these insert choices for the reference. A watch’s appearance alone does not establish whether its insert is original, period-correct or later replaced; that needs to be assessed on the individual example. Phillips catalogue.
Which movement is inside a 16710?
Calibre 3185 is the standard movement reported for the 16710. Some late transitional examples are reported with calibre 3186, but production year alone does not prove which movement a particular watch contains. A qualified watchmaker should confirm the movement in the specific watch before a buyer relies on a seller’s description.

What changed during production?
The reference’s details evolved over its long production run. GMT Master History records approximate luminous-material eras and changes to bracelet end links, case holes and crystal markings. These are useful inspection clues, not a complete serial-number lookup or a substitute for checking the watch itself.
Dial lume
The specialist chronology places tritium dials through roughly 1997, Luminova around 1998/99, and Super-Luminova from around 2000. It also notes a brief transition in which Luminova appeared on a dial marked T<25. Treat these dates as approximate guideposts: dial markings and lume should be considered alongside the watch’s serial, condition and other components.

Bracelet and case
The same reference history notes solid end links from 2000 and no-holes cases beginning in 2003 in later Y-series examples. Confirm the bracelet and case details on the watch and whether they are appropriate to its history; a broad production date cannot establish that every component is original.
Other listed specifications
A specialist secondary reference lists a sapphire crystal, an anodized aluminum 120-click bezel and 100 m/330 ft water resistance. These specifications are not from an official Rolex technical sheet in the cited material. In particular, a vintage watch should not be assumed to remain water-resistant: its present condition requires a current pressure test.

What to check when comparing individual watches
A reference number and bezel color identify only part of the story. Auction catalogues describe particular watches, and their condition, included items and service history do not establish what is typical of every 16710. Compare the specific evidence available for each example.
- Movement: Ask whether the watch has calibre 3185 or a claimed transitional 3186, and request qualified confirmation.
- Dial and lume: Compare the dial markings and luminous material with the approximate chronology, while allowing for service or replacement parts.
- Bezel: Identify the insert colorway and assess its condition and originality rather than assuming the variant name tells you either.
- Case and bracelet: Inspect wear, end links and case-hole details, and consider whether the parts fit the claimed production period.
- Service and documentation: Review available service records, guarantees, papers and box as example-specific evidence; their presence or absence varies by watch.
- Water resistance: Require a current pressure test if water exposure matters. Historical specifications do not show the condition of a particular vintage example.
Does the 16710 have a set current price?
The cited Sotheby’s and Phillips pages describe individual auction examples, not a representative market dataset. They do not establish a current market value, production total or price premium for Pepsi, Coke or black inserts. To assess a listing, compare the exact watch’s condition, originality, movement, service history and documentation; do not treat a single catalogue example as a market-wide price guide.
