A “Rolex Milgauss DLC” should be treated as an aftermarket-modified watch, not a factory Rolex model, unless documentation for that specific watch proves otherwise. Rolex’s 116400GV specification identifies an Oystersteel watch; a historical auction listing documents a customized example with third-party PVD coating, but does not establish that it was DLC-coated. PVD and DLC are not interchangeable terms.
Is there a factory Rolex Milgauss DLC?
Rolex specifies the Milgauss reference 116400GV with an Oystersteel case and bracelet, a smooth bezel, and a green scratch-resistant sapphire crystal. The brochure does not list a DLC finish. That distinction matters: a dark-coated Milgauss may be a genuine Rolex watch that was modified after manufacture, but the coating itself should not be described as a Rolex factory finish without evidence for that individual watch.
Antiquorum’s catalogue records a 116400GV customized by Black-Out Concept with third-party PVD coating at a 2010 sale: auction catalogue entry. This is evidence of an aftermarket-coated example, not proof that it received DLC treatment. Nor does the listing establish the chemistry, durability, scratch resistance, serviceability, or value of another coated Milgauss.
What are the factory specifications of the 116400GV?
Rolex’s brochure gives the following specifications for reference 116400GV. These describe the factory watch, not the properties of an aftermarket coating.

These figures are stated in Rolex’s brochure for the named reference; the brochure gives no publication year: Rolex Milgauss 116400GV. Do not assume every Milgauss reference shares these exact specifications.
How should you assess an aftermarket-coated example?
Evaluate the watch as both a Rolex and a modified object. The coating’s appearance alone cannot establish its method or quality. Ask the seller for records and check the following before buying:

- Coating provenance: Ask what treatment is claimed—DLC, PVD, or another process—and request documentation rather than treating the terms as synonyms.
- Condition: Examine the case, bracelet, crystal, dial, and movement separately. A coating description does not tell you the condition of the underlying watch.
- Service history: Request service records and ask Rolex or an Official Rolex Service Center how the modification affects service options for that specific watch.
- Transaction terms: Read the seller’s return policy and any warranty terms, including what they cover and who is responsible for service.
The available auction record is historical, and it does not establish current market-wide price or availability for coated Milgauss watches. A single listing should not be used as a current price benchmark.
What do the Rolex guarantee and service rules mean for a coated watch?
Rolex says its five-year international guarantee applies to qualifying new purchases and excludes watches materially modified with non-genuine parts or components: Rolex guarantee terms. The published rule does not decide how every coating procedure affects an individual watch. Ask Rolex or an Official Rolex Service Center for a case-specific determination rather than assuming that the original guarantee remains unaffected.

Rolex says new and genuine watches are sold by Official Rolex Jewelers and that only Rolex can confirm a watch’s authenticity. Its Certified Pre-Owned programme is available through participating Official Rolex Jewelers for qualifying second-hand watches; Rolex describes authenticity certification, servicing, and a two-year international guarantee. Rolex recommends occasional cleaning with a microfiber cloth. It also advises washing the case and bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush only after first screwing down the winding crown, and rinsing with fresh water after exposure to sea water to remove salt and sand. These are Rolex’s general care instructions; they are not coating-specific tests or promises that cleaning will restore or protect aftermarket DLC or PVD.
Rolex says professional polishing of the case and bracelet should only be done by an Official Rolex Service Center. Avoid DIY polishing on a coated watch: polishing could affect a modification, and Rolex does not describe a home method for repairing or renewing one. See Rolex watch-care guidance.
