What the Rolex Perpetual Padellone is
Rolex adds the Padellone to its Perpetual collection as a complete-calendar watch. It displays the day and month in apertures at 12 o’clock, the date with a blue hand tipped by a crescent around the dial’s edge, and the moonphase alongside hours, minutes, and seconds. The name revives the collector nickname for Rolex reference 8171, a complete-calendar watch from the 1950s. Rolex’s 2026 launch announcement describes the new watch and its design.

Why the dial divides opinion—and why it works for me
The dial asks for attention rather than offering a quiet, minimalist reading. Oversized Arabic numerals, several calendar indications, and moon appliqués with faces all compete for space. Michael Penate’s September 21, 2026 article reports negative responses, including “Wow, I hate it,” while explaining his own affection for the same crowded arrangement. Those selected reactions illustrate a split in taste; they do not establish a broad public consensus.

The moon faces lend the watch a bit of character, and the unusually busy upper half keeps it from reading like another conventional dress watch. If you want restrained symmetry and an instantly legible dial, the Padellone may feel overworked. If you enjoy a watch whose complications are visibly part of its personality, its crowded layout is the point.

How the annual calendar works
Rolex’s Haplos mechanism distinguishes between 30-day and 31-day months. The wearer must correct the calendar once a year, when February ends and March begins. It is an annual calendar, not a perpetual calendar: it does not automatically account for February’s varying length or leap years. Rolex says the day, date, and month change together at midnight in a fraction of a second.
Movement and construction
The 39 mm case houses the self-winding Calibre 7190, which beats at 5 hertz and uses Rolex’s Dynapulse escapement and Haplos calendar system. A transparent caseback reveals bridges decorated with Rolex Côtes de Genève and a yellow-gold oscillating weight. Rolex says the movement is protected by 30 patent applications, two of them exclusive to this watch; these are applications, not 30 confirmed granted patents.

The dial combines a grained finish across most of its surface with a fine satin finish at the edge. Those are published design details, not a substitute for handling the watch: Penate says he had not handled it, so his article does not provide first-hand findings about finishing, comfort, proportions, or value.

For a purchase decision, confirm current availability, exact configuration, and local price with Rolex or an authorized retailer in your market. At these reported figures, comparisons with complicated watches from other high-end makers are natural, but price alone does not establish which offers better value. A meaningful comparison would need to account for calendar behavior, movement architecture and finishing, materials and dial design, regional pricing and availability, and after-sales service.
