The Rolex reference 6202 was introduced as the Turn-O-Graph in 1953, an early Rolex watch with a rotating timing bezel. It is often called the “Pre-Submariner” because it slightly preceded the Submariner 6204 and shares part of that watch’s early design history. That nickname is retrospective: the documented model name was Turn-O-Graph, not Submariner.
What was the Rolex 6202?
Reference 6202 was an early Turn-O-Graph, a stainless-steel Rolex with an automatic movement and a rotating bezel for timing elapsed intervals. Monochrome’s historical account identifies the first Turn-O-Graph as the 6202, released in 1953, and notes that some examples carry the name Monometer instead. It also describes variation in the model’s dials and branding, a reminder that early production was not as standardized as later Rolex lines.
Calling it a “Pre-Submariner” is a useful way to describe its place in the timeline and its relationship to the emerging Submariner design. Monochrome makes that precursor interpretation; Rolex’s own history confirms the Submariner launched in 1953 but does not identify the 6202 or use the nickname. Rolex’s official history describes the Submariner as a divers’ watch rated to 100 metres (330 feet) at launch, with a rotatable bezel for reading immersion time.
Was the 6202 the first Submariner?
No—not by its documented model name. The 6202 was marketed as a Turn-O-Graph. Monochrome says it slightly predated the Submariner reference 6204, making “precursor” or “Pre-Submariner” a historical interpretation rather than an official Rolex designation. The two watches belong to the same early chapter of Rolex tool-watch history, but the available evidence does not make the 6202 a Submariner.

The chronology is close: both the Turn-O-Graph 6202 and the Submariner’s launch are dated to 1953. The distinction is that Monochrome places the 6202 slightly ahead of reference 6204, while Rolex’s timeline establishes the Submariner launch year without discussing the 6202.
How did the 6202 bezel work?
The rotating bezel let the wearer track elapsed time without a chronograph. Christie’s catalogue describes its circa-1953 example as having a black bezel calibrated for 60 units, with five-minute divisions and dot markings. The catalogue says Rolex designed the bezel as a simplified chronograph for timing events of up to an hour and reports the historical term “time-recording-rim.” The scale could be aligned with the minute hand at the start of an interval, then read against the hand to see elapsed minutes.

That interval-timing function is distinct from the Submariner’s diving context. Rolex’s account of the Submariner says its rotating bezel was used to read immersion time. The shared rotating-bezel idea helps explain why the 6202 is discussed as a forerunner, but it does not establish that the 6202 was itself a Submariner or a purpose-built dive watch.
What specifications are documented for 6202 examples?
Auction catalogues provide useful details about individual watches, not a complete specification sheet for every 6202. The measurements differ slightly between catalogued examples, so they should be read with their source and lot context.

How does the 6202 relate to the Submariner 6204?
The useful comparison is historical rather than a claim that the watches are interchangeable. The evidence supports the following distinction:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should collectors know about variation and surviving examples?
Monochrome notes variation in 6202 dial treatments and branding, including the Monometer name. Christie’s calls the model less successful than Rolex expected, citing competition from the Submariner and GMT-Master; Bonhams describes its production run as limited and says it ended in the early 1960s. Those accounts suggest why an early Turn-O-Graph can attract collectors, but they do not establish a precise production total, a definitive final year, or current market value.

Auction descriptions are records of the particular watches catalogued, not an authentication standard. If considering a 6202, have a specialist evaluate the watch’s condition and consistency of its components, and request a detailed condition report. Historical articles and auction listings can help frame questions, but neither alone proves authenticity.
