Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Rolex Sea-Dweller 126600 is a 43 mm Oystersteel professional diver rated by Rolex to 1,220 metres (4,000 feet), with a helium escape valve, date, and approximately 70-hour power reserve. By published case diameter and water-resistance rating, it sits between the 41 mm Submariner and 44 mm Deepsea, but those figures alone cannot tell you which watch will fit or suit you best.
Choose the Sea-Dweller for its particular combination of size, date display, helium valve, and depth rating—not simply because its rating is higher than the Submariner’s. Try it on if you are unsure about its wrist presence; no hands-on wear or testing was conducted for this review.

Is the Sea-Dweller between the Submariner and Deepsea?
Yes, by the two published measures most directly relevant to that description: case diameter and stated water resistance. “Between” does not mean the three watches are interchangeable, nor does it establish how comfortable any of them will be on a particular wrist.

Rolex’s product page supplies the Sea-Dweller specifications; Rolex Newsroom’s Submariner models page supplies the Submariner figures; and Rolex’s Deepsea technical brochure supplies the Deepsea figures. The one-millimetre difference in published diameter between the Sea-Dweller and Deepsea does not establish their relative thickness, weight, or comfort.
What changed in the 2017 Sea-Dweller update?
Rolex introduced the 126600 for the Sea-Dweller’s 50th anniversary in 2017. According to Rolex, the update increased the case from 40 mm to 43 mm, added a Cyclops lens over the date, and introduced calibre 3235. Rolex also says the red Sea-Dweller lettering referred back to the original model.
The Cyclops is a meaningful choice for buyers: it magnifies the date, but changes the appearance from earlier Sea-Dweller references without a date magnifier. Whether that is an improvement or a drawback depends on your preferences.
Is the Sea-Dweller 126600 too big?
The published case diameter is 43 mm, but that number alone cannot settle how the watch will wear on you. Wrist shape and personal preference matter, and this review has no hands-on fit assessment to report. If its size is a concern, try it on and compare it with a Submariner before deciding.

The Submariner’s published diameter is 41 mm, while the Deepsea’s is 44 mm. These figures help frame the lineup, but they do not provide a complete comparison of thickness, weight, or comfort. The Sea-Dweller’s larger professional-diver format may appeal to someone seeking wrist presence; it may be less suitable for someone prioritizing a smaller or more discreet watch.
Why does the Sea-Dweller have a helium escape valve?
Rolex developed the helium escape valve for saturation diving. In Rolex’s explanation, the valve lets excess pressure inside the case escape during decompression in a hyperbaric chamber without compromising water resistance. It is a specialist feature; the dossier does not establish that a typical recreational diver will need it.
Rolex says the Sea-Dweller launched in 1967 for professional divers spending extended periods underwater, initially with a stated rating of 610 m / 2,000 ft. Rolex says the model reached 1,220 m / 4,000 ft in 1978. This history helps explain the watch’s professional-diving identity, though the published rating does not by itself establish everyday usefulness or value.

Calibre 3235 and everyday ownership
Rolex lists calibre 3235 as an automatic movement with an approximately 70-hour power reserve and a stated precision of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. The reserve may matter to people who rotate watches, but it does not establish how an individual watch will perform in use.

Sea-Dweller vs Submariner: which should you buy?
The Submariner has a smaller published case diameter and lower water-resistance rating. The Sea-Dweller adds a helium escape valve, Glidelock extension, and a higher stated rating. Both remain choices whose suitability depends on what you want and how each fits you.
Consider the Sea-Dweller if its 43 mm format, date display, helium valve, and 1,220 m rating are the combination you want. Consider the Submariner if you prefer its 41 mm published diameter or its lower stated rating is already sufficient for your intended use. Try both on rather than treating their specifications as a substitute for fit.
What is the difference between the Sea-Dweller 126600 and Deepsea?
The Deepsea 136660 is listed at 44 mm and 3,900 m / 12,800 ft, compared with the Sea-Dweller’s 43 mm and 1,220 m / 4,000 ft. Rolex describes the Deepsea’s Ringlock case architecture and specifies a 5.5 mm-thick domed sapphire crystal. Its much higher rating and construction make it the more extreme depth-rated option in this comparison, but the available published figures do not establish which model will feel more comfortable.
Choose between them based on the specific design and capabilities you want, and assess fit in person. The depth rating alone does not determine daily wearability or value.

Do not treat documentation or a seller’s description as independent proof of authenticity or water resistance. If diving readiness is claimed, seek appropriate current evidence rather than relying on appearance.
Verdict
The Sea-Dweller 126600 is a distinct professional diver, not simply a Submariner with a higher number on the dial sheet. Rolex’s published specifications give it a 43 mm case, 1,220 m / 4,000 ft rating, helium escape valve, date, Glidelock extension, and approximately 70-hour power reserve. Those details make it a compelling option for a buyer who specifically wants that combination.

Its position between the Submariner and Deepsea is supported by the published diameter and water-resistance figures, not by a universal claim about fit or superiority. Compare the specifications, decide which features matter to you, and try the watch on if size is a concern.
