The Rolex Sky-Dweller’s movement update happened in 2023, when calibre 9002 succeeded calibre 9001 in the 336-series generation. Subsequent releases changed dial, material and bracelet combinations—not the movement. Rolex’s 2025 announcement, for example, introduced a bright green sunray dial on an 18 ct yellow-gold Sky-Dweller; it did not announce another calibre revision.
What changed on the Rolex Sky-Dweller, and when?
The updates arrived in stages. The key distinction is between the 2023 movement and reference refresh and later changes to the watch’s appearance and configuration.

Dial names matter: the 2025 bright green sunray dial is distinct from the mint-green and blue-green dials reported with the 2023 launch. Those dated launch descriptions are not a complete account of Rolex’s current catalogue; configurations can vary by reference and market.
What is the difference between calibre 9001 and 9002?
Calibre 9002 is Rolex’s self-winding mechanical movement developed and manufactured for the Sky-Dweller. It was introduced in 2023 as the successor to calibre 9001. Contemporary coverage identified the Chronergy escapement as a notable part of the change; Rolex’s later materials also describe a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. These component descriptions do not establish a quantified performance improvement over calibre 9001.

Rolex specifies an approximate 72-hour power reserve for calibre 9002. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independent test result. The movement is exclusive to the Sky-Dweller, according to Rolex’s model information.
The practical takeaway is straightforward: the 9002 belongs to the newer 336-series generation, while the earlier 326-series generation used the 9001, as described in 2023 launch reporting. The sources cited here do not provide a controlled, quantified comparison of the two calibres’ real-world accuracy or durability.

How the Sky-Dweller displays time and date
The watch combines local time, a second time zone and an annual calendar. Centre hands show local time; an off-centre disc gives reference time in 24-hour format. The Saros annual calendar shows the date at 3 o’clock and indicates the month through 12 apertures around the dial. Rolex’s official model page describes these functions.
To set its functions, the Sky-Dweller uses Rolex’s Ring Command system, which connects the rotatable bezel, winding crown and movement. Turning the bezel selects a function to adjust with the crown. The system is intended to make the watch’s multiple settings accessible through a single crown rather than separate calendar pushers.

Current stated specifications
Rolex lists a 42 mm case diameter and water resistance to 100 metres (330 feet) for the Sky-Dweller. Its reference 336934 brochure gives a precision specification of −2/+2 seconds per day after casing. These are manufacturer-stated specifications, not independent measurements of every watch in use. For a meaningful comparison, start with the reference generation, then check the exact material, dial and bracelet combination. The release-year context prevents similarly named dial colors from being mistaken for the same offering.
