He described the watch as “beatable, readable and uncluttered”—a personal reason for wearing it, not a durability test or assurance about every vintage example.
Why Fratello chose the no-date Submariner for a week away
Nijenbrinks’s appeal was practical: a watch he could wear while swimming and hiking, with a clear dial and no date display to interrupt its layout. The 2017 story is about his choice and experience, rather than a controlled assessment of the watch’s performance.
Fratello identifies the featured watch as a reference 14060 with an N-serial number and says its accompanying original paperwork dates it to 1992. That is the article’s account of its own example; it does not independently establish the history or authenticity of other watches bearing the same reference.
What makes the Rolex 14060 a “two-liner”
The 14060’s uncluttered look comes from two related choices: it has no date window, and its lower dial carries a sparse two-line description. A Fratello comparison calls this layout a “two-liner.” The result is a particularly restrained take on the familiar Submariner design, without the extra dial text associated with later chronometer-certified versions.

14060 history and the difference from 14060M
Fratello describes the 14060 as succeeding the Submariner 5513 in 1989, with an approximate production span of 1989–1999 and caliber 3000. These dates are a secondary source’s historical account, not a precise production record for every watch.
| Reference | Movement and dial distinction | Historical relationship |
|---|---|---|
| 14060 | Caliber 3000; initially not chronometer-certified; two-line lower-dial text | Fratello places its approximate production period at 1989–1999. |
| 14060M | Caliber 3130; later chronometer text distinguishes the dial from the two-liner | A later modified-movement generation, according to Fratello. |
| 114060 | Not detailed in the cited historical descriptions | A subsequent reference; it is not the 14060 featured in the 52Mondayz story. |
The distinction matters when searching listings or comparing watches: 14060, 14060M, and 114060 are related Submariners, but they are not interchangeable names for the same reference.

Published specifications—and what they do not prove
Bob’s Watches describes the 14060 as having a sapphire crystal and Triplock crown, and reports a water-resistance rating of 300 meters (1,000 feet). The same retailer compares that published rating with 200 meters for the earlier 5513. These are reference-level specifications as reported by the retailer, not a present-day test of a surviving watch.
A vintage watch’s current water resistance depends on the condition of that individual example and its seals, maintenance, and service history. No inspection or pressure test is established for the 14060 in Fratello’s story, so the historical rating alone cannot establish that a particular watch is safe to swim or dive with now.

What the 52Mondayz story can—and cannot—tell a buyer
The article makes the 14060’s appeal easy to understand: a no-date dial, simple two-line text, and the author’s preference for wearing it on an active week away. It does not provide a condition assessment that can be transferred to other examples. Service records, replacement parts, originality, provenance, and authenticity need to be checked watch by watch.
Fratello’s 2017 article also mentioned examples around €5,000 at the time. That was an editorial estimate made then, not a current valuation; it should not be used as a guide to today’s asking prices.
