What is the Rolex Submariner 16610LV “Kermit”?
Rolex says it introduced the 16610LV in 2003 to mark the Submariner Date’s 50th anniversary. The anniversary model was the first Submariner in the range with a green bezel. Its green anodized-aluminium insert contrasted with a black lacquer dial, giving the watch a different look from the familiar all-black Submariner without changing the basic tool-watch character of the line. “Kermit” is collector shorthand for the green-bezel, black-dial 16610LV. Phillips uses the nickname in a later catalog entry, but Rolex does not call the watch that in its official history. Phillips’ Spring 2026 catalog illustrates the nickname’s use in the collecting market.
Documented example details
A circa-2003 example cataloged by Phillips is described as a 40 mm stainless-steel watch with automatic calibre 3135 and a Rolex Oyster bracelet. These are details for the cataloged example and reference context, not a complete specification sheet published by Rolex. Phillips’ 2020 Hong Kong catalog entry records those details.

What does “Flat Four” mean?
“Flat Four” refers to the shape of the numeral 4 in the bezel insert’s 40 marking: the top of the 4 is flat. Phillips describes an early 16610LV example with this feature. The term identifies a bezel detail that collectors discuss; it is not, by itself, proof that a watch is an early or original configuration.
Be cautious when a seller presents a Flat Four insert as conclusive evidence of authenticity or rarity. A standard black-bezel Submariner can be fitted with an aftermarket green insert, and an insert can be separated from the watch it originally accompanied. The reference, dial and serial-era configuration need to make sense together. Neither a bezel close-up nor box and papers authenticate a watch on their own. How does the Kermit differ from the later Hulk?
The 16610LV was followed by the Submariner Date 116610LV, which collectors commonly call the “Hulk.” The nickname marks a visible generation change, not simply a new name for the same watch. The distinctions supported by the cited histories and catalog descriptions are:

What should you check before paying a collector premium?
Buy the individual watch, not the nickname or the story attached to it. For a high-value purchase, ask an appropriately qualified watch specialist to examine the watch independently. A visual checklist can help you ask better questions, but it cannot authenticate a 16610LV.
- Confirm the reference and configuration. Check whether the reference, dial and serial-era details make sense together. Be especially cautious if a seller claims an early Flat Four but cannot support the watch’s history and configuration.
- Examine the bezel in context. The 16610LV’s green bezel is historically distinctive, but a green insert alone does not establish that the watch left Rolex in that configuration. Ask whether the insert’s originality is documented rather than relying on appearance.
- Assess provenance and condition. Request clear documentation of the watch’s history and an independent condition assessment. A cataloged example may include papers and accessories, but those items are not proof of authenticity by themselves.
- Get specialist authentication before committing. Have the watch examined by a suitably qualified specialist who can assess the complete watch, not only the bezel. Do not treat any online checklist as a guarantee.
The aluminium insert is part of the model’s historical identity; Rolex’s later Submariner timeline contrasts it with Cerachrom. Collector preferences about wear, aging or replacement are subjective, and the cited sources do not establish a universal Rolex replacement-parts policy for this discontinued reference. Ask about the specific watch and any proposed service or parts before purchase.

Bob’s Watches reports average sold prices from its own completed transactions, not a universal market index. Its figures are retrospective observations for that dealer’s sales and do not predict what another seller will receive or what a watch will be worth later.
