What is the Rolex Submariner Ref. 6538?
The 6538 is a vintage Submariner produced approximately from 1955 to 1959, according to Sotheby’s and Phillips. It followed the Submariner’s 1953 launch. Rolex says the original model was water-resistant to 100 metres (330 feet) at launch; that is a launch-era specification, not a blanket rating for every surviving 6538 today. The reference is associated with an automatic Cal. 1030 movement, a slightly thinner case and more beveled lugs in Sotheby’s description. Auction examples cited by Sotheby’s and Monaco Legend measure about 37 mm, but that is a measurement of those particular lots, not a substitute for checking an individual watch.
Why is it called the “Big Crown”?
The name refers to the large 8 mm winding crown. The cited catalogues also describe the 6538 as having no crown guards—the protective shoulders found around the crown on some later watches. What does “tropical dial” mean?
“Tropical” is collector and auction-catalogue language for a dial originally described as black that has aged toward brown. Sotheby’s describes a black dial faded to a warm brown, while Monaco Legend refers to brown patina resulting from aging. The term describes the dial’s appearance and condition; it does not designate a separate model or guarantee that every 6538 dial will age the same way. Sotheby’s; Monaco Legend Auctions.
How to tell a two-line dial from a four-line dial
The line count refers to the text printed on the dial, not to the reference number. Sotheby’s describes four-line examples as rarer than two-line examples, but does not establish an exact rarity ratio.

What is the James Bond connection?
Rolex’s official history says the Submariner appeared on Sean Connery’s wrist in the first James Bond film. Sotheby’s and Phillips specifically attribute the watch associated with Connery in Dr. No to the 6538, which is why “James Bond Submariner” is a familiar nickname for the reference. This connection should not be stretched into a claim that every later Connery-era appearance used one unchanged watch: catalogue accounts differ in how broadly they list the films. What to compare when looking at a 6538
A reference number and a compelling description do not tell the whole story. For a specific watch, compare the catalogue description with the watch itself and keep the evidence tied to that example.
- Dial: Check whether it is described as two-line or four-line, its color and aging, the printing, and the visible condition.
- Originality: Confirm which parts are represented as original and which, if any, are service replacements. Phillips notes that worn parts were historically replaced to keep watches functional.
- Case: Review the described sharpness, wear and polishing rather than assuming all examples retain the same shape.
- Movement and dimensions: Use the movement and measurements stated for the individual lot; do not infer that another watch matches them.
- Sale context: Separate the sale date, estimate, realized price, buyer’s premium and terms. A past result is not a current valuation or proof of authenticity for another watch.
For scale, Monaco Legend reported €181,250 including premium for its 1958 tropical-dial 6538 sale in 2023. Dorotheum reported €26,400 including buyer’s premium and VAT for a circa-1956 example with service dial and hands in 2025.
